Oh man, I was using Youtube outside of my normal adblock environment a couple of days ago and the most barftastic datacenter ad came on with all of these old farmers smiling that the data centers are paying their taxes now and they're such good neighbors and so on. Was a stark reminder of why one must never Youtube without an ad blocker.
The water panic about data centers is highly overblown. The real problem with them is that they are very noisy. I certainly wouldnt want to live near one.
Rural water infrastructure is not built to handle what the data centers require so if fucks with people’s water pressure etc. Plus guess what uses tons of water? Power plants. Data centers require tons of power therefore much more water will be used. Either directly, or indirectly, data centers are using tons more water than many municipalities are built for. It’s definitely an issue.
The problem is that the data centers are largely not the ones footing the bill for the expanded infrastructure, they're negotiating deals with the utility companies to pass along the costs to regular consumers, causing everyone else's utility bills to go up.
Socialism for the rich, cold hard capitalism for the poor
That's because of the existing regulatory structure for electricity. Electric companies have little say in the matter, it's a complex and highly regulated industry, and legislators at the state level are already working on changing it
Not to be entitled, but I'd prefer we have more 'productive' in the enterprise here.
Instead of people using this technology as a glorified search engine and slowly going insane while the government endorses a wild goose chase for gen AI.
is this a serious comment? The AI market is already worth over $700B. Just because you're using it as a glorified search engine doesnt mean that's all its capable of.
You know, that reminds me of how much the market over the Internet and various domains was worth in the year 2000. Or how much the subprime mortgage market was worth in 2008.
There are use cases for this technology - medicine is a good example, as a way to help real doctors and real researchers - but that doesn't mean that everyday people aren't being hurt by it and that it isn't overvalued. How much money has OpenAI made, again?
Yes, the internet was and still is a large market, as are domains, as are non-qm mortgages. That things sometimes are overvalued doesn't change the fact that they're still very large markets. AI is the biggest technology since the invention of farming, that is not an exaggeration. Just wait and see

Sounds like a good problem to have. We can build more infrastructure to support our growing economy

not in water stressed regions. You cant just build infrastructure for water that isnt there.
1millionbucks | 15 minutes ago
why would a planner put a datacenter in a desert? is the water not there, or is it just being used for other things?
disignore | 4 hours ago
yeah, what about emissions, there was an article about musk's data centers big gas emissions
1millionbucks | 4 hours ago
productive enterprise tends to produce emissions. what exactly is the complaint?
disignore | 3 hours ago
So there's noise, water usage and gas (methane) emissions, I wonder what's the problem
(forgot there were mercenaries on the interwebz to spot data centers anymosity)
powercow | 20 minutes ago
Really? Well most the corps like google have removed their emission goals due to data centers.
Our nation has made a lot of progress moving to non emission sources of energy.
data centers come into areas without enough power and so use natural gas generators, which is increasing our emissions again.
most productive enterprises dont require a gas generator.

This is supposed to be a forum for high quality thought. Try to think for a second about why productive enterprise might require energy

Thinking it’s a glorified search engine tells more of your understanding of the current landscape than anything else.

The biggest invention since farming?
Sorry, that's difficult to take seriously. I'll be waiting, but it's going to be while skeptical and focusing on the problems and downsides.
