What an interesting story - im so glad the younger generations got to meet and create relationships. The racial system in this country fractured so many families over many years, it’s nice to read about a family healing from that.
One thing that we’ll never know - if Ned had outlived his father, would he have taken care of his children in the will (or taken them back in?). Did he do that anyways only to have his father use his power to prevent it from coming to fruition? Or was Ned perfectly content to just pretend his kids didnt exist for the years he lived while they were in an “orphan asylum” (wtf).
Yes! It’s odd that Ned would live openly with Minerva and the children, and then do a 180. Guess you can’t see inside a marriage/family, but showing up like that while Minerva was alive indicates good, close relationships… Also, wouldn’t Ned’s relationship with his family have ruptured the moment Ned went to live at the cottage? Wonder if there was some sort of financial arrangement, ie he got regular money from the colonel, who drew the line at inheritance…?
Incredible story. I'm honestly just flabbergasted like I don't even know what to say. Put pictures of the family are haunting because I literally cannot tell him those cases who should be considered white and he should be considered black. And yet it split a family. In the end where they visited the old house. Oh my gosh tears. Thanks for sharing
This is one of the most incredible things that I've ever read in all of my life
Thank you so much for sharing this with us, for sharing your pain and your journey. At the end of the article when Linda walked into the house on Pyrtania St, I felt so much that you guys have really shattered that ceiling!
We wish you many blessings in life! There's no way to know for sure but I think your grandfathers would be really proud 🥰
Wonderful article that threads the line between respecting the complexities of the story while at the same time leaving the reader with a satisfying conclusion. Beautifully written and so interesting.
Thank you so much for sharing this incredible story. My sister and mother do geology for our own family. We are Black and have also discovered folks in the family tree who were white presenting/white passing. It is a complex situation.

The link provided is a gift link, or at least it shows up that way for me. Click on “maybe later” under where it says “log in or create an account”.
I did have to give up reading partway through because ads were making things glitch.
I also tried to find a link and to create a link on archive.ph, but wasn’t successful.
