Looks like the debate of dispersants (chemicals that emulsify the spill into tiny droplets not seen by the naked eye and therefore not subject to as many government fines) versus sorbents (materials that make the oil stick together and thicken so it can be skimmed off and removed) has been settled. Dispersants left the oil in the water so it could damage more wildlife (but increased shareholder value 🤮).
I don't go to Exxon either. Thought we should pull in and dump some used oil in the lobby and store, then smear it around a bit, and tell them we will come back later to clean up.
Marine populations in the deep waters of theGulf of Mexicoplummeted by roughly 60 percent in the years following the 2010Deepwater Horizonexplosion, with little evidence of recovery, a new study has revealed.
Another brick in the wall of our destruction. We won’t learn and destroy so much else in our own demise…
I was working a software contract for BP in Texas when this was happening. They had a deep sea fishing competition in the gulf for their executives while this was happening. It was team building exercise planned before the disaster, but decided not to cancel it. I remember asking one of them "...and you still think its a good idea?" They didnt give a shit

Who could’ve seen this happening…

BP, for one.. They knew and did it anyway.

Tis a mystery.

It's fucked up that they bought those ships from Kevin Costner that would clean it up on the surface but chose to use the dispersants instead.
kingtacticool | 3 hours ago
They did both. But the sheer size of the spill made it so they chose to disperse something like 90%+ of the oil into the water column.
WeAreHumanBeing | 2 hours ago
They did both, but they lied about everything for like an entire month.

Still have yet to visit a BP or Amoco gas station after this.

Seems silly, but me too.

Same. They killed the Gulf. I’ll never forgive them for it.

Heartbreaking what big oil and human need for it does to our planet’s life.

I'll wager the majority of that damage to marine life was caused not by the oil, but by all the Corexit they dumped in the sea to "clean up" the oil.
Once again renewing my calls to ban the use of Corexit worldwide.
oroborus68 | 5 hours ago
Well with both still there,it might be difficult to tell which is worse or is it the combination of the two that turns things really toxic.
saamsquamtch | 4 hours ago
Corexit makes crude oil (iirc) about 43 times more toxic according to Dr. Riki Ott, oil spill specialist
Zalrius | 7 hours ago
There is nothing about oil that isn’t toxic.

The final sentence... I'd add "and ecological disasters caused by war".

So surprising...
Maybe the government should actually punish these companies instead of handing them a small fine?
Gym6DaysAWeek | 2 hours ago
Why would they punish their buddies who helped them get elected?
Honest-Yogurt4126 | 23 minutes ago
Or give the oil industry subsidies!

We all knew this....all humans should be way more upset about the damage to our planet.... it's the only one we've got...

Just like the Valdez years and years of argument after argument in court reduced the settlement.
