One of the researchers involved, as I recall, sat in a plane, trying to figure out the meaning behind some of the gear ratios, until he noticed that it reflected the very intricate lunar precession to a high degree. The mechanism is over 2000 years old, and until it was found, it was believed that technology of that level was only possible by the 13th century.
