Do the complainers actually have a right to complain? As a side note, when talking about this with my wife, her view was that they really don’t, and maybe they should think about paying for this free software before complaining.

There is an absolute world of difference between a user's stance being "I demand that you fix this for me for free" and "I demand that you don't break my OS".

If you take on the responsibility to replace some absolutely essential chunk of an OS and then do a shitty job replacing it and then on top of that foist that shitty replacement onto everybody, you have made the world a slightly worse place and should absolutely expect that you're going to get slagged for it.

Nobody would have cared that Pulseaudio or Wayland sucked if they hadn't been foisted off onto people while they were half-baked.

100% this. There’s a world of difference between, ‘hey, I made this cool thing, if it works for you awesome!’ and ‘hey, I made this cool thing, and I will use my political sway to influence others to use their political sway to force you to use it and not use the thing you like!’
