Alright, maybe I'm just "old school" but I do NOT get the hype for this OS. It looks nice and has "strong opinions" about specific things but...could you not just do most of this yourself with any old distro? Is it just a nice riced out desktop? Any of the media I have seen for this distro just leaves me to trying to understand the hype.
For context I'm like a 15 year Nix user. Cut my teeth on Debian-based distros and a couple years back switched to NixOS. I have opinions about LInux stuff but nothing militant lol
Is this just a way for AI companies to funnel money into a distro to try and have their models being a bigger priority for usage in said distro? I know feck-all about DHH but saw part of his Ruby World talk and thought the guys was on drugs.

Yes, at the start of the project, but no, not at this point. As it stands, omarchy has almost 7000 commits from over 560 contributors. That's an amount of polish you cannot just do yourself, even with heavy LLM usage.
That said, I haven't tried it myself, and possibly never will. But it's not honest to say that it's nothing.
Context: been a Linux user for 30 years, also spent some of it developing one of the major ones.

I think they're just excited and hence motivated about things happening on their side of the political fence. Whatever that side is.
First I hear of this OS, so the hype seems to have passed me by, until now. "If the application you need doesn't exist, have your OS create it for you" is a pretty cool approach. Will it work? Probably somewhat? Just never look under the hood! In any case, it's nice that it's Linux and not Windows that might be the first big vibe-first OS. Maybe it will make a dent in the market share of Windows. Personally I'll never use anything powered by Grok.
Grok 4.7 and beyond will be helping power our automated agents, like Omabot, who’s been reviewing the flood of PRs that keep pouring in. And it has its work cut out. We’re closing in on 7,000 pull requests from more than 550 contributors, and every one of them deserves a proper look. That’s not a job for mere humans!
On my project at work we're currently 4 backend developers. Of those, only me is actually hired by the company, while the three others are consultants. AI has made all of them more productive, but as the person who's going to maintain this software for possibly the rest of my life, I do my best to keep an overview of how the software actually does and what new code is added, and that means sooooo many pull requests. Pull requests are 100% a job for mere humans! Unless we want it all to turn into a black box no-one knows what actually does.
(Some days it feels like all I do is pull requests, and on those days I consider moving to the Arctic to become a turnip farmer.)
And given where they’re headed, there’s a real chance we’ll soon be consuming tokens beamed down from data centers in space.
lol
Maybe Musk can use all that space AI to make his self driving cars work.
Everything about Omarchy just weirds me out, especially considering it's a "first linux" for so many "tech bros". Like, Arch, with its rolling release scheme, is probably the last place to start if you're new to Linux, but what do I know.

It's a shame that DHH is an unrepentant racist asshole. Birds of a feather flock together, I suppose.

Oh, well, fuck that guy. And fuck reading anything he writes.

Yeah, just look at the list of sponsors for the project…

Fascist Linux gets a donation from the Fascist LLM. Color me unsurprised.

They also hired a security lead and announced a $100K security bug bounty program. https://omarchy.org/news/2026/10/omarchy-launches-bug-bounty-program-on-hackerone/

I would (politely) caution against equating commit count with level of polish.

Omarchy is the opposite of "polished"

We're right around the corner from FSD, it will be coming soon. - E. Musk c2016

His track record of lies - just on this topic! - is much richer than that:

We should have already been on Mars for 1-6 years too.
