Nice post.

But.. That's a "cold roof". An uninsulated loft with open ventilation, meaning the air up there is pretty much the same as the air outside. And Bergen is a cold and wet place. The equipment might not thrive up there come winter.

Isn't cold mostly a benefit for computers? It doesn't get particularly cold here in Bergen. This winter it didn't even go under - 11,3°C.

Cold is ok, freezing cold and wildly fluctuating temperatures (depending on how the sun hits the roof) is not ok. Humidity will also fluctuate a lot, which is bad.

Edit: I’m not saying the equipment will die come winter. It might work fine for years! But it will probably fail a good bit earlier than it would in better conditions.

As a homeowner whom has had to deal with all kinds of annoying stuff; I'd also just be worried about creating heat in the attic in general. Assuming Bergen gets snow then that snow might melt (possibly up that whole joist cavity), and then immediately freeze when it gets into the gutter, creating a risk of ice damming. Could also potentially introduce mold issues due to the heat difference resulting in condensation.

I'm doing something not entirely dissimilar but still keeping the hardware within the conditioned space, but bumping the conditioned space out more into the attic.

Of all the reasons to move away from NixOS Restic backups are an odd one. It's reasonably easy to configure with services.restic.backups

If you’re self hosting audiobooks, I can’t recommend AudioBookShelf (server) and AudioBooth (ios client, https://apps.apple.com/app/id6753017503) enough! I’m not affiliated to either of the projects but just a happy user of both!

Couldn't fully see from the pictures, but I assume the switch have a SFP port, which means you could take the SFP from the Altibox modem and plug it into the switch, so you have one less device. Just need to configure the switch to trunk VLAN 102 and the UCG Ultra to use VLAN 102 for internet.
