I'm convinced you couldn't draw up a better strategy on behalf of BRICS if you tried.

Undermine all NATO alliances, weaken the dollar, cripple allied supply lines, create domestic, national, and international in-fighting, embolden the oligarchs, encourage all the companies to all-in on AGI (knowing it's a fairy tale), drain the arsenals, empty the strategic reserves.

This one though? This one is brilliant. Pit the US into a dispute with it's neighboring nations. The very isolation that has enabled US dominance over decades is now in jeopardy. And it's being instigated entirely by one side.

There’s a reason why there was a bunch of Chinese and Russian propaganda flowing in ahead of the last election

As it should be. The sad thing is the majority of posts regarding this seem to be some form of hatred of Americans. 70M out of 140M voted for this. Another 70M didn't vote. I understand the anger at those 140M, but not the other 200M

RashmaDu | 17 hours ago

I mean that is vastly more than half of the registered voting population. I think it's pretty fair to dislike a country on the basis that more than half its inhabitants vote for this shit. And the ones that didn't or now regret it are not doing nearly enough to protest this slow ride descent into fascism.

DarthJDP | 14 hours ago

thats 70 million at our border trying to destroy our sovereignty. the other 200M stand by and do nothing while it happens. I guess we should think of the "nice germans that had nothing to do with the holocaust"

OddlyFactual1512 | 11 hours ago

Please inform of what you are propising they do and which people of which nation did so in a similar situation.

DarthJDP | 11 hours ago

I am more focused on what I will do to preserve my nation, we have competent leadership in the PMO. What should Poland recommend to the Germans as they were gearing up to invade back in 1939? Say thank you to the good Germans that didnt want to invade? Sad that you cant seem to figure it out that your lot failed to keep America from collapsing into MAGA fascism and that might -gasp- have impacts to all Americans, not just the "bad" ones. Nobody gives a shit if you are a good American. We arent going to praise you for your righteousness.

OddlyFactual1512 | 11 hours ago

You're using the same language you would condemn people for using to demonize other groups. Congrats, you are just like MAGA.

DarthJDP | 10 hours ago

what would you propose I do and by which people of which nation did so in a similar situation?

GustavoTC | 8 hours ago

What happened after the no kings rally? You guys can't keep a protest going for a week, and stop it before anything is fixed or addressed. Fighting for your rights means you need to keep the pressure on politicians until the situation is reverted

Want some examples?

Albania is currently protesting the next Epstein island from Kushner

For 2025, there's South Korea and Nepal

Hong Kong protested in 2019-2020 against Chinese authorities

biscuitarse | 16 hours ago

77 million voted for this. 90 million sat it out. America has elected this clown 2 times. I have lots of love and respect for the 75 million who voted for Harris. We should get together and do something. Let's not give too much credence to the bots.

Mean fuck yeah we fucked around during the Cold War and did bad shit I won’t deny that, but not that long ago we were making progress in fixing that shit now we’re using random South American boats as weapons testing what the fuck do we expect to happen with this bullshit

DL505 | 17 hours ago

I echo your sentiment.

This has become a dick measuring contest between Carney and Trump.

There are no winners.

There are only losers being Canadians and Americans.

EasyEar0 | 17 hours ago

No.

This is Orange Dipshit and his merry band of idiots shitting all over everything. Carney is just doing what he can with the best interests of Canadians in mind.

Canadians know retaliatory tarrifs will hurt us, but they are necessary.

The US is 100% to blame here. What the US government was offering was clearly unacceptable. I would say it's stupid, but I'm pretty sure it was malicious.

DL505 | 17 hours ago

Explain in detail how this is in "canadians best interests"

EasyEar0 | 16 hours ago

Nah, I'm not writing an essay for you. The strategy behind retailiatory tariffs is clear enough. I'm sure you can figure it out if you actually care to, even if you don't agree with it.

Standing firm on matters of basic sovereignty is not a "dick measuring contest". Canada must have the right to make our own trade deals, for one.

DL505 | 16 hours ago

I didn’t vote for him. I will never vote for him, but I do agree that he’s making the right choices.

Freud-Network | 16 hours ago

No lesson will be learned. If it burned down, half of America would blame the trees instead of the match that started the fire.

Lightening84 | 16 hours ago

only the citizens of a country pay tariffs. Americans paid Trump tariffs so the Canadians will be paying the Carny tariffs.

Freud-Network | 16 hours ago

Carney is going to impose export tariffs, which Americans will pay.

Lightening84 | 16 hours ago

That's not what everything on reddit has explained about tariffs. The Americans apparently paid for the Trump tariffs so the Canadians will be paying for the Carney tariffs. They are the same tariffs.

Freud-Network | 16 hours ago

The purchasing party pays the tariff, if that helps you understand.

Lemp_Triscuit11 | 16 hours ago

Candians would be paying the tariffs, yes. Unlike America, though, Canada hasn't prodded and provoked every trading partner so Canadians will be able to find products cheaper than the tariffed US goods. Not as cheap as they got them from the US pre-tariff, but cheaper than buying the tariffed US goods.

Since the USA is starting trade wars with everyone, we often end up just still buying the same product just with the tariff prices lol

As long as Jeffries and Schumer are there, the Democratic party isn't going to do anything for the betterment of the American people.

Johns-schlong | a day ago

I'm so tired of this both sides nonsense. Democrats literally can't do anything more than they're doing, they don't have a majority in either house. Under Biden they got a ton of great legislation passed doing some very deft horse trading to bypass the filibuster.

TgetherinElctricDrmz | 23 hours ago

Are you really suggesting that Jeffries is doing everything possible to fight the GOP agenda?

Really? Him?

partyrockerdj | 17 hours ago

Don’t forget their abomination of an autopsy report for the 2024 election.

Johns-schlong | 16 hours ago

He's the house minority leader, what else can he do? Seriously, what power do the Democrats have that they aren't exercising?

TgetherinElctricDrmz | 12 hours ago

Look. Trump won two times because his voters are angry and anxious, and he promised them a righteous battle and salvation.

Of course he didn’t deliver on this. But rhetoric matters in leadership. Inspiration matters in leadership.

Jeffries is weak. He talks weak and acts weak. He does not stand up for his own words. This isn’t my own personal crazy, hot take - literally everyone can see this.

I expect him to see the writing on the wall, I expect him to listen to the Democratic voters en masse, and I expect him to be righteously angry, as many of us are out here suffering.

A great example is Zohran Mamdani and Netanyahu. He can’t arrest Netanyahu or stop him. But Mamdani took to the air, said that he would if he could, and called Netanyahu a war criminal.

That took a lot of courage, and it was very inspirational, even if, on paper, it was ineffective.

Would love folk's thoughts on this:

Tariffs are being implemented by the USA government for a single reason, and it is not to re-shore manufacturing.

It is a forced consumer bail out of the government.

Tariffs -> Government pockets

Products go up and the consumer pays 85-95% of the increased cost.

thoughts?

spinningcolours | a day ago

Or it’s simple human greed.

Lutnick’s sons made a lot of money on the last set of tariffs, and he then came in at the last minute to make outlandish demands that made Canada walk away from the negotiations. One family will make billions, off the backs of the US taxpayers who will pay the tariffs.

Fortune covered this:

Not left vs right so much as up vs down. The French knew what to do in the late 1700s

meeyeam | a day ago

It's trickle up economics.

Companies push costs to consumers. Then, when the tariffs are made illegal, the tariffs go back to the companies.

Since they can't pass the value back to the consumers and it's too late to invest in capital, they buy back stock.

Executive compensation goes up. Shareholder value goes up. Employees and customers see nothing.

Hank3hellbilly | a day ago

don't forget the convenient excuse for price increases that will stay long after the tariffs are gone.

KnowerOfUnknowable | a day ago

You mean like tax?

ChiefWiggum101 | a day ago

Hahahaha. The money isn’t going to the government, it’s going to trumps pockets.

The tariffs are extortion by the Trump administration paid by the tax payer.

Trump unilaterally makes your goods cost more in my country, unless you do the following:

  1. Buy Trump crypto so he can then sell at inflated rate and wash dirty money.
  2. Donate to his PAC.
  3. Hell just give him a gold bar and he will sign over a state to someone right now.

It’s just a bargaining chip he is using for his personal enrichment. Look at trumps recent wealth accumulation and look at the governments debt and you will see where the money is going. Into Trump and his donors pockets.

RashmaDu | a day ago

I really don’t think it’s that deep. When you say bailing out, do you mean the deficit? The tariffs will never make a dent, especially if they will keep being ruled illegal. What do you mean by “government pockets”? If you mean “Howard Lutnick and sons will make a killing betting on the tariffs” then sure, but that doesn’t seem to be what you are referring to

DL505 | 17 hours ago

General government revenue. I did not consider the obvious bullshit Lutnick is involved with.

RashmaDu | 17 hours ago

Even setting aside the corrupt schemes, it genuinely cannot do anything for government revenues either, because tariff revenue is minuscule compared to the deficit

[OP] One-Emu-1103 | a day ago

I agree. Trump wants those tariffs in order to pay for the deficit so ordinary people shoulder that burden and not tech bros and various corporations and billionaires

RashmaDu | a day ago

That is absolutely not what Trump wants. The tariffs will not make anything approaching a minuscule dent in the deficit (setting aside the fact that most of them are still illegal and will be reimbursed), so this is nonsensincal. And in any case, Trump has clearly shown he does not care about the deficit in the slightest, nor does anyone in his admin.

It’s really much simpler: Trump can post “I TARIFF you 500%” on Truth Social whenever a foreign leader annoys him slightly, feel like a big strong man, and not suffer any direct consequences. And then if his cronies can make some money on the side betting on the tariffs, that’s a bonus (whether or not that’s his objective, it’s very clear members of his admin such as Lutnick do this).

BigTwobah | a day ago

You don’t understand anything if you think those tariffs will pay for the deficit.

Aqual07 | 19 hours ago

No, this isn’t how sovereign nations with fiat currencies work. Governments are not run like businesses or households - the rules of the game are completely different.

A government with a fiat currency has the power to print as much money as it wants. Of course, There are inflationary consequences. Governments generate revenue as one of the main methods of combatting inflation. Taxes are money that is taken out of the system.

It is intuitive to think that taxes are money raised that the government can spend. But that’s not true for countries with fiat currencies. Taxes are a symbolic blood offering that affirms the value of the dollar.

DL505 | 17 hours ago

If they keep printing money what happens to their ability to issue debt?

If I owned $500B of treasuries, Canada for instance, and the issuer of debt prints money then the fiat currency takes a beating -> This decreases the value of my holdings in my home currency.

If I know money printing is happening, and will happen in the future, what will I demand for yields? Much higher.

Aqual07 | 14 hours ago

Yes, those are inflationary consequences.

Chipay | a day ago

You're thinking about this wrong, imo.

The overall goal is the subjugation of Canada and keeping China out of America's new, reduced sphere of influence. Other actors in Trump's team (as well as Trump himself) will use the opportunity to enrich themselves while doing it.

RashmaDu | 17 hours ago

There is no "overall goal", my god. Trump is an incompetent moron who makes up his plans on the fly when he wakes up in the morning. He has no concept of long term strategic planning, and has surrounded himself with people who won't force him to.

He's making decisions as he goes to make himself feel strong and to make a lot of money. It's really not that deep, stop trying to scry the tea leaves that are his posts when it's extremely clear what he is: a venal, petulant, impatient, moron

Chipay | 14 hours ago

I'm not talking about Trump but Vance.

Vance is 100% convinced that the US is in terminal decline and must retreat from the world and secure its own sphere of influence, cede Europe to Russia and Asia to China. I think you're being too short-sighted in thinking that Trump does random stuff instead of being manipulated into making decisions by others who try to spin it to him as being tough and heroic.

DL505 | 17 hours ago

I never mentioned Canada.

Trumps admin has tariffed the world. I believe it is a method to squeeze the USA consumer to help raise revenues for the USA via taxing the shit out of the citizens....

RashmaDu | 17 hours ago

This won't work! Tariff revenue is tiny, and trump very clearly doesn't care about revenues. The explanation is much simpler: Trump likes tariffs because they make him feel strong and can make him money

PlanetCosmoX | a day ago

Yeah, you’re just flat out wrong.

You’d think that in an economics forum you’d learn basic economics before posting.

How about you ask the Ai how you’re flat out wrong, it’ll teach you a thing or two.

DL505 | 17 hours ago

I like to engage with humans, even folks like yourself who outsource their thinking to AI.

Do you have any of your own thoughts to add why I am "flat out wrong"?

- Tariffs are borne by the consumer -> Fact unless you buy into the garbage Trump and Bessent were selling

- Tariffs go into general revenues and do reduce deficits -> Fact

- Debt burden in the USA is driven by deficits -> Fact

RashmaDu | 17 hours ago

Fact: tariff revenue is minuscule and will not ever stand a chance of making a dent in the deficit without being large enough to genuinely destroy the economy.

And in any case: Trump doesn't care about the deficit, neither do republicans! Why would he out an extremely damaging policy in place for something he doesn't care about?

He just likes them because they're personal, make him feel strong, and enable him to make money on the side. It's that simple, don't try to look for a deep strategy here

PlanetCosmoX | 14 hours ago

You can’t engage because you’re uneducated.

The Ai will summarize the facts for you so that you can “catch up” and then contribute.

Bitter-Variation-151 | 13 hours ago

Carney should have stood up to trump and demanded more revenue from the bridge. Canada paid for 100% of it. But he caved to trump at 50% of the revenue.

He begged premiers to put booze back on shelf and still couldn't get a deal. Carney walked, USA didn't. The dollar for dollar tarrifs on sept 8 will never happen. Why? Because carney will sign a deal from trumpy after the bi elections next week. Carney can't risk those ridings with a signed deal because it would piss off his tds voters. They'd run to ndp and Green Party when carney signs over to trump. Carney walking away was all theatre for these bi elections.

91% of carneys assets are in the USA. Along with his kids in university there. Carney knows feeding tds to Canadians secures him more power but Canada will collapse without the USA. So he will cave to trump next week. I promise you that.

Recent_Lack6384 | 17 hours ago

These tariffs Canada are announcing are purely political because it will not improve its position in negotiations in the slightest as evident by the fact that Carney was about to sign a deal that was basically the same from well over a year ago despite Canadas tariffs on us goods and alcohol bans. I mean Adam Smith said it best when he implied that retaliation tariffs are more damaging to one's own economy and are pointless if it doesn't result in tariffs being lifted by the other country which it won't in this case.

A deal will be signed next week. After the bi elections in Canada. Carney will concede to trump as usual so be can't sign before his seats are locked up. You heard it here first.

I have. But you haven't. Carney has conceded 50% of the bridge revenue , the dst, us alcohol, retaliatory tariffs. With nothing in return.

RelishedCrab | 21 hours ago

Bridge deal was shit, agreed. 50% of the profits for the first 15 years. Better to leave it closed? Probably not. I don’t know.

Digital Sales Tax. Also shitty, yes. But this, just like Carney asking to put US liquor back, was to preemptively help facilitate the trade deals that they just walked out of.

Your last point is just, ‘retaliatory tariffs’. Are you saying Carney hasn’t matched the US’ tariffs?

If Carney concedes to trump ‘as usual’, he would have agreed to all their terms and fed us to the USA. Instead he walked, and has said he will match all the tariffs imposed on us.

Would I prefer for Carney to just block Trump and have nothing to do with him until he’s reasonable? Absolutely. But that’s not realistic. We’re going to have to make sacrifices while we deal with this bat shit insane administration.

The bi-election in which the libs are expected to win 2 of 3 seats, gaining a majority government? That bi-election?

Resident_Window_9369 | a day ago

Is Canada biting the hand that feeds them?
Canada exports around 75% of their goods into the US. The US export around 15% of their goods into Canada. We definitely need to stand up however we also need to have a plan as we wean off of the US for our exports. We need to make sure that there are other deals out there with other countries to take our exports.

Psyclist80 | a day ago

That's what the US is trying to leverage against us. We have had a good relationship for a long time and has led to ever increasing integration. That's now over, and we will work to diversify away and hopefully come out of this economically stronger. I'm ready to endure the pain of not giving up our sovereignty. A fight that I'm not backing away from.

Resident_Window_9369 | a day ago

I stand with you on that one. But let’s not shoot ourselves in the foot.
Hopefully our leaders can negotiate a deal with other countries to take our dependency off the USA.

cjcfman | a day ago

All this tariff stuff is about the 5% of canadian to us exports not covered under Cusma. The other 95% is still under free trade. Its not worth the serious concessions over 5%

Also Carney and Canada have been signing trade deals like crazy with a bunch of other big countries. It's just gotta take time to get rolling

Resident_Window_9369 | a day ago

Good point.

BuvantduPotatoSpirit | a day ago

For the time being, but there's a time limit to get a lot of additional port capacity built.

Chipay | a day ago

The US demand is a veto on all future and current Canadian trade deals, you can't wean yourself off American dependence with that constraint. A trade war is the only way out

Man I hope you're just a kid and not a voter

Resident_Window_9369 | 19 hours ago

Man, I wish you would just keep your assumptions to yourself. If something bothers you move on.

HackD1234 | 22 hours ago

I guess we should shut off the oil taps.. that will take care of the Trade deficit.
