I came from an era where tech leaders said things like 'Do no evil.'
Now they spy on everything we do, manipulate public opinion, mislead billions... All in the pursuit of a 'MORE' they could never spend.
I remember an age where the Uber wealthy gave back to society, bought huge areas of land to hold in protection to be enjoyed by the poorest amongst us, created endowments that would put the best of the next generation through college a hundred years after they passed out of this world...
Now, they take a dollar as a yearly salary so they can hide their pay behind capitol gains and offshore holdings...
I remember a time when wealth meant an obligation to society in the arts and history... Now it means owning a professional sports team and charging top dollar for every game... Even the ones you watch in the comfort of your own home.
The rich in the past did this because they knew that in a democracy, history has shown that you can be remembered as a philanthropist or footnote... All because you thought it it was ok for the peasants to eat cake...
