Chris Wickham was a hugely influencial historian, and one of my favourites on the subject of Late Rome and the Post Roman world. He will be missed.

Man, I'm legitimately sad. Ever since high school, I've been super into Roman stuff. My brother bought The Inheritance of Rome for me for my birthday when I was in 11th grade and it completely shifted how I view history as a subject, let alone the Late and Post Classical period.

His Medieval Europe was a complete shock - I never expected a short book with a generic title with a well-covered scope to be full of novel and exciting insights (and extraordinarily well-written).

Which is not in any way to diminish his earlier and foundational work on Late Antiquity and the Early Middle Ages.

A great loss.

Really sad news, we’ve had a few other loses in the field recently like Averil Cameron and David Abulafia.

I literally just read Medieval Europe, amazing book that goes very deep despite the generic title.

Sad news :(

This is sad. He did my Dphil transfer and the sheer scale of his knowledge was breathtaking. Very generous with knowledge and filled with good advice.

RIP. Few historians have had the impact he did in my field. Heard just the other day he was sick, didn’t realize he was this sick.

What a life, and body of work.

RIP. I remember having 2 days to finish my undergrad dissertation and procrastinating by reading the Inheritance of Rome, it was just that addictive. Great historian.

Damn, his "Medieval Europe" was my introduction to more scholarly history reading. RIP.
