U.S. crude oil tops $100 as Iran escalates Hormuz attacks, Ukraine vows to hit Russian refineries

By lifting fuel sanctions on Russia and effectively buying Iranian oil with Russia as the intermediary, Trump has basically screamed to the whole world that Iran has him in an impossible position. This response by Iran is so predictable because Trump will be "forced" (if you believe he isn't doing this on purpose) to buy more fuel from Russia at inflated prices. Fuel that will, once again, ultimately come from Iran. Iran has every incentive to increase the pressure after Trump's Russian diesel deal.

Trump is perpetuating the war in Iran by buying fuel from Russia. He is damaging American geopolitical interests and the spending power of the American populace. I'm not sure how anyone can argue that he isn't doing it on purpose at this point.

It’s not clear if or when Iran would make concessions because of the economic pressure, but every barrel they sell makes it less likely or at least delays it.

The rest of the world is also facing economic pressure as petroleum reserves are dwindling and attacks on mideast oil infrastructure continue. While Russia is still sending weapons to Iran.

It seems like the amount of diesel sold helps Iran’s cash problem more than the world’s diesel problem, but I didn’t do any arithmetic to really see.

What a fucking mess.

>It seems like the amount of diesel sold helps Iran’s cash problem more than the world’s diesel problem, but I didn’t do any arithmetic to really see.

It makes sense that would be the case. Iran is hurting for cash, so even a relative drop in the bucket for US consumption (2 weeks worth of diesel) is a big cash infusion for Iran.

Wow, the way you put it really highlights the circularity of this absurd war. What are we doing?

Hey, it's hard work robbing the richest nation on earth and simultaneously covering up your Epstein island involvement.

Mrikoko | 4 hours ago

Are we tired of winning just yet? This was entirely avoidable. Not like everyone didn’t warn Trump and Hegseth of the consequences. But here we are. What will it take for the war to stop? At this point, republicans are likely cooked in the midterms. But then what?

Oxeneer666 | 4 hours ago

What's alarming is that there are reports that it was Trump that was in charge of the Starlink tampering. I worry that with Ukraine continuing its efforts in attacking refineries, and the position Zelenskyy is taking, which can be viewed as attacking the United States as well (at least Trump would justify it as such), I worry that if Zelenskyy is assassinated, it will be the defining factor of WW3.

ActualSpiders | 4 hours ago

The administration has been very consistent about saying "This was not ordered by Trump". But that's *all* they've been saying. So, either they're just blatantly lying to cover for him, or the order was given by someone else in the administration - maybe Hegseth or Miller.

If it's a lie to give Trump cover, that would be par for the course. But if it's not - and I give even odds for either answer being correct here - then there's someone making critical wartime decisions that Trump has no awareness of, which would be pretty disturbing if we didn't already know how non compos mentis Trump is.

dogs_gt_cats | 3 hours ago

Its mafioso language.

The Don doesn't give an explicit order. Instead he tells a lieutenant "we need to send a warning to Ukraine about how much they depend on us, wink wink nudge nudge" and then that person takes the subtext and does what is actually being asked, allowing Ukraine to be attacked by disabling Starshield access, and giving Russia an advantage. It provides plausible deniability by sticking almost exclusively to subtext and unspoken rules.

Organized crime is aware it is under constant surveillance, so generally messaging is more or less never specific.

Edit: That said, this article just landed:

ActualSpiders | 3 hours ago

JFC when are people - and nations - going to notice that wealth disparity like this is an existential threat? That makes it clear that Musk *wanted* to do this to Ukraine; he just needed Trump's OK as cover for himself.

Imagine if your nation's entire war effort - its ability to defend itself from invasion - could be turned off by *one* guy who decides you haven't been nice enough to him? And the same thing applies to your entire economy, your healthcare infrastructure, your utilities... It doesn't matter what you bought, or contracted for, or paid for - ONE person with his own agenda can just decide your nation stops being able to do anything modern for as long as he wants.

dogs_gt_cats | 2 hours ago

It is, unfortunately, historically precedented. The Rothschild family personally bankrolled wars for the British crown. Especially during the Napoleonic wars.

ICLazeru | 3 hours ago

I don't doubt Trump hates Zelensky, but I don't think Trump has the political capital left to motivate such a thing. I'm hoping he had his hayday running free with nobody checking him, and now we see how stupid it is, and now they're putting the reins on him.

a_case_of_everything | 3 hours ago

This will only get worse. What we are seeing now is the orange turd on his "best behavior" due to upcoming midterms. He's been doing illegal shit without consequences for so long already I really don't think that is likely to change regardless of midterm results. Good luck.

We will be at war with Iran for the foreseeable. I'd imagine until 2032 at least. They have no incentive to back down or negotiate, and theres no world where they dont make a condition of the war ending being that they can get nuclear weapons so they can't be invaded again, and we will have no good argument against it because we invaded them for no discernible reason after we got done kidnapping the president of Venezuela and threatening to invade Canada and Greenland.

Then there will no way other western nations are ok with a nuclear Iran, so that will also go nowhere for us, and the war will march on because all we've done is establish that Iran can shut the world economy down when it wants.

Qeltar_ | 3 hours ago

Or... they make up some bullshit, declare victory, and leave.

It's not really that complicated. The problem is simply Trump's ego.

Agitated_Tip_8713 | 3 hours ago

I'm getting told my analysis is bad when these are the takes in this thread? We just go home?

Qeltar_ | 3 hours ago

Yep.

It's an option. They won't do it because they would rather grind the entire country to a pulp than risk "losing face," but it's absolutely an option and probably the smartest one right now.

The best move is to not dig yourself into a hole. The second best is to stop digging and climb out.

growaway9172 | an hour ago

The only way this is possible is if the 2028 president campaigns on doing this, because Trump has been hook line'd and sinker'd into this by Israel and there is no way out for him.

Agitated_Tip_8713 | an hour ago

Getting into the war was beyond fucking stupid,  but now that we've done it there's no way we can just go home. Iran is a terrorist state, we have to resolve this conflict now and they can't be allowed to have nuclear weapons.

Idk what form its going to take to end the war but just pulling our shit out and going home is not the answer, and would probably kick off an enormous conflict in that region because NOBODY except China and Russia is going to allow Iran to start making nuclear weapons and keep their stranglehold on the strait.

growaway9172 | an hour ago

I mean, I kind of disagree with your premise. Just like in all our other wars in the middle east, there is no such thing as winning. We can stay and fight, or "trim the grass" as they like to say, but religious desert fanatics cannot be "beat", and Iran is the most fanatical of them all.

But the US pulling out would be a huge problem for Israel, and since Israel controls the US Gov, you are right we cant just go home.

Agitated_Tip_8713 | 56 minutes ago

I think we're actually agreeing more than we're not except for the brain broken ZOG conspiracy blue qanon shit. Because I dont know what winning even looks like or how it could possibly happen. I just know that the whole world will be made worse by iran getting nuclear weapons and that can't be how this ends, but idk how we could possibly make any argument against them having them now and the more we push the more we justify them needing them.

fx2600 | 4 hours ago

This is terrible analysis

Agitated_Tip_8713 | 3 hours ago

Whats incorrect about what I said? Do you think Iran is going to let the west dictate its nuclear policy now that its been invaded arbitrarily by a country it previously had a nuclear agreement it abided by?

OrangeJr36 | 4 hours ago

If the exemptions for Iran to transport oil using their shadow fleet are indeed (possibly already) in place, then Iran can keep fighting for a decent while longer, probably just not until 2032.

If the Trump Administration is willing to let their oil back onto the market to lower oil prices, which they are considering, then Iran can relieve a bunch of their budget woes.

fx2600 | 3 hours ago

Both sides have an incentive to back down/negotiate. Maybe they will reach terms that allows Iran to resume normal exports in exchange for something but that would go against the point above.

Unhappy-Exchange-771 | 4 hours ago

You should refrain from posting in public if this is the depth of your analysis haha

Wellontheotherhand1 | 2 hours ago

Your post history makes it pretty clear that you are a bog-standard Republican who will excuse anything Trump does, and cheerlead every mistake all the way

I have no doubt that you were one of the people who thought the war would be over in just a few weeks, right?

Agitated_Tip_8713 | 3 hours ago

What's incorrect about what I said?

barkinginthestreet | 2 hours ago

> What will it take for the war to stop?

Trump is going to wait til after the midterms, bomb a bunch more stuff in Iran in an attempt to save face, then declare victory and go home. Only way that changes is if MBS tells him not to.

Crude oil prices rose sharply Friday as Iran escalated its attacks in the Strait of Hormuz this week and Ukraine vowed to keep striking Russian refineries.

At least nine tankers and cargo ships have come under attack near Hormuz since Sunday as Iran tries to choke off oil exports through the strait. Iran sank the container ship GFS Pride on Wednesday, according to U.S. Central Command. The crew of the Singapore-registered ship was safely evacuated.

Crude exports through Hormuz have pulled back after touching prewar levels in September. Shipments stood at 9.4 million barrels per day for the week ended Wednesday, about 70% of the average before the Iran war, according to data provided by the firm Kpler.

The “energy ceasefire” that President Donald Trump tried to declare between Ukraine and Russia has quickly unraveled. The Kremlin continued attacking Ukrainian infrastructure despite the supposed truce. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Kyiv would resume strikes on Russian refineries in retaliation.

Agitated_Tip_8713 | 4 hours ago

All to distract from the fact that our president is a rapist pedophile btw and is using the power of the presidency to defend his fellows. That is why you will be paying more for gas and why your tax dollars will be going to the terrorist state of Iran in one form or another.

I voted yesterday and someone in a TurningPoint USA t-shirt asked me if I wanted a Republican voting guide. I don't know what happened but I tripped and said H e l l N o! I couldn't help myself. It was as though someone had asked me if I wanted to buy heroin or crack cocaine or something

Constant-Plant-9378 | 4 hours ago

> asked me if I wanted a Republican voting guide

"No. I'm not a pedophile."

Agitated_Tip_8713 | 4 hours ago

I'm in Atlanta and I take the marta to work 3 days a week, and the other day there was a group outside the station with a republican voter guide, they came up to me and I literally just laughed at them and kept walking.

This may finally be the push that gets more green energy adopted like solar and EVs. No one wants their economy to be dependent on the whims of another nation

Keep up the good work Ukraine!

We are absolutely loving the social media sites without the constant Russian bots, you have done this world a great service.

Stop clumping Ukraine into this unilaterally US created issue. Oil and diesel stabilized before Iran war. Now they're overinflated.

As soon as USA and Israel caused Iran war stops, the prices will start stabilizing. Ukraine has nothing to do with it.
