I’m excited to see the project is still going—despite all the corpo pressure to disallow custom ROMs. When it trickles to LineageOS to microG, I’ll pick up my update.
You don't need that anymore. microG runs fine on vanilla, just add the upstream in F-Droid and install the two apps.
It used to be necessary to modify the system to allow microG to masquerade as the Google services, but LineageOS has been shipping with these changes for quite a while now.
That I can not authoritatively talk about, I have never tried. In general, to stay on the safe side, it is not recommended to switch signing keys (and upstream LineageOS has different ones from LineageOS for microG) without doing a clean installation.
The original stance was that (among other security-related things with early versions of the patches), as a relative heavyweight in the custom ROM space, we wanted to avoid actions that might instigate Google to close off AOSP more/completely. Given that Google apparently has been on that path now anyway, microG has been compatible with upstream LineageOS since February of 2024.
I've been Google-free for years thanks to LineageOS and F-Droid, and I remember using LineageOS ten years ago on an LG G3 as well before a hiatus because I got some cheap Motorola phones with decent stock ROMs. LineageOS is the first place I look when considering a new phone. Next is Nura (formerly postmarketOS) to think about the device's future.
My OnePlus 6 has continued to be all I need, and my wife's OnePlus 9 Pro has been working great for her. Thanks, LineageOS team!
Exciting! I have been using GrapheneOS, but am not sure whether I should switch as I have heard that they have been merging AI-generated pull requests and the support for google pixel phones will be impossible for newer models (that is not their fault).
I'm not sure, but I feel uneasy at the idea of an operating system focused on privacy and security using AI to generate code.
I don't understand how android works, and there's probably a good reason for it, but I find it quite irritating to have to reflash my device every major version increase; I let my phone go out of date often as a result

Can you do a dirty install when switching from microG to normal Lineage?

What you mean by this? Last I heard Lineage OS was hostile towards some of the features to make microG easy to install.

lineageos should be distributed on CD instead for convenience.

Most phones supported by LineageOS do on-device updates just fine. No wipe/reinstall needed, just a reboot.
