The Great Inflammation Panic: The wellness world’s favorite buzzword has gone federal. For those of us with real inflammatory disorders, the misinformation isn’t just annoying—it’s harmful.
I am one of the 10% of all women with endometriosis and one of the ~4% worldwide with asthma. After a particularly grueling surgery recovery this month, where multiple body systems reacted all at once, I am starting to think I have mast cell activation, which can be in a terrible feedback loop with my other inflammatory conditions.
Inflammation is not something I can control in a body like mine. II do everything you are “supposed to do” health-wise, when I am not actively in a flare, but my body continues to inflame itself. And yet, rhetoric like this, with which I was surrounded in an antivax family (my mother literally won awards) makes me feel, deep down, that somehow this is my fault.
If this administration really cared about “inflammation,” they would not maroon those of us with common health conditions. They would not stop research to find better biologics and make them more cost-effective (my Dupixent is $2300/month without the manufacturer assistance). And they certainly would not make those of us who have no choice but to be “inflamed” feel like we did something wrong.
I also have MCAS (Mast Cell Activation Syndrome), and yeah, it isn't our fault and I would like more treatment options and for it to be taken seriously.
I will be so happy when this cabal of morons is out of office.
