Whether it’s true or not, my high school World Issues teacher said one year he had the students do a paper on euthanasia. One kid thought he meant “youth in Asia”. Ended up grading him based on if that’s what he actually asked lol
I thought the same thing when it was assigned to us as a topic in college. It was a debate course and we were talking about how we can help build a foundation for it where it'll benefit the elderly. Thought it meant like helping youth volunteer to assist the elderly lmao.
My wife did a year of high school in France. Once they were assigned to write about the role of the death penalty in the novel Les Miserable. You know la peine de mort.
My wife heard le pain de mort and wrote a serious essay about the bread that Jean Valjean stole that caused his incarceration.
The teacher hung up the essay in her office because she loved the misunderstanding and execution of the task so much.
Death with dignity is better than assisted suicide. My grandmother is in hospice right now and doesn't want to be around anymore and it's hard when her body keeps hanging on. She got hepatitis 40 years ago from a blood transfusion and never drank. Last year she was diagnosed with cirrhosis and now we're just waiting. Side note, they have her on hydromorphine and I guess that gives super vivid dreams and all she dreams about is being in heaven with her husband .
Medically speaking they are both types of abortions, one is a spontaneous abortion and the other is an induced abortion, because the word aborion medically only means the pregnancy was terminated, which can happen naturally, accidentally or intentionally.
In everyday vernacular we use miscarriage for spontaneous or accidental (car accident caused a miscarriage) and just abortion for ones that are intentionally induced.
The average person isn’t going to care (or even know) about the medical definition because the intent is different enough to make them different things.
You replied to a comment saying that “a miscarriage is the same thing as an abortion, with different social attitude, by saying it absolutely is not. When the person was actually correct and using it as an example of how laymen definitions of words can affect how people view the same thing differently depending on how it’s described.
A premature end of a pregnancy for natural reason can be described as a spontaneous abortion, but since socially the word “abortion” has taken on a negative meaning people say miscarriage.
Suicide also has a negative meaning, which is why polls have shown that more people are against assisted suicide than are against assisted dying, when they are the exact same thing.
Or how the Affordable Care Act has much higher approval than Obamacare when they are the same thing, one just being a nickname.
So yes, the average person isn’t going to see abortions and miscarriages as the same thing, because to most people abortions only apply to purposeful action taken to end a pregnancy. Which is the point they an I were trying to make, as to why it’s better to call assisted suicide, assisted dying or death with dignity. Suicide has a far more negative connotation among the general public, and when people here of it, they think of people ending their life due to depression and not due to pain and suffering from an terminal illness.
Ok I see what you’re saying about assisted suicide vs assisted dying. But I still take umbrage with miscarriage and abortion being the same. People can’t accidentally get Obamacare or accidentally get assisted suicide. And American women are already dying because christofascists legislate their beliefs on people over this issue so last thing I want is to advance their argument that miscarriage and abortion are the same thing so they can enact more laws punishing women for having miscarriages.
>death with dignity is better than assisted suicide
Did you mean the phrases death with dignity is better than the phrase assisted suicide? Because I (and it appears others in the comments) thought you meant these are different acts. Like letting somebody die of natural causes is a dignified death while assisted suicide isn’t.
When you say suicide that has a certain connotation to it. I suppose death with dignity and suicide are the same thing but it'd kind of be like saying that you had an abortion when it was a miscarriage. Medically I guess they're the same thing but one's a little bit more loaded than the other
Well I'm going to be doing it myself. Assisted suicide that is. I've been there for older suffering relatives, I was only one turning up daily to help. I didnt have nok status and my aunts etc didnt want them to leave despite older relatives begging for assistance. It was terrible how esp my gran lingered on, very old with multiple fractures, totally bedbound and in dreadful pain. So I'm going to fly to Switzerland when the time comes. I wont mind company on outbound trip. My life/ death my way.

It's called Voluntary Assisted Dying, VAD, here in Australia.

Medical assistance in dying, or MAiD here in Canada.

It’s supposed to be called euthanasia here in the US

It's MAiD in Colorado. Incredibly simple and compassionate people helped us use the service, from my experience.

Oh cool. I hadn’t heard the term before so I didn’t realize it had changed
pdxamish | 21 hours ago
That's another loaded term that evokes thoughts of unnecessary and not needed deaths. Not something that the patient wants and needs.

I’m starting to think you don’t know what some words mean

The same thing. Assisted suicide is more often used by people who don't believe in the process and painting it as a bad thing

I see nothing wrong with assisted suicide. If someone has some terminal awful disease the bigger crime is forcing them to suffer
Sir-Kyle-Of-Reddit | 23 hours ago
Assisted suicide is death with dignity

One is more loaded. I replied to someone else but a miscarriage is the same thing an abortion. Yet they carry different social attitudes.
