Smoked for many years with no issue, but as I got older it started causing anxiety and paranoia to the point that I just stopped smoking completely. Smoked daily for maybe 10 years or so, then I just couldn’t anymore.
Same. I had an ex when I was 18 who swore it made her too anxious. I was always "you sure you couldn't try another strain?" And she'd always go "no. Theres no other strain.". I'd go "you know there's different types..." to the response "YES. I've tried them."
And then years later I started getting genuine panic attacks. Just one time at first. Then a dozen smokes later again. And then another "mild panic attack" where I was just pacing around for 30mins. And then another proper panic attack.
Then before I knew it everytime I smoked involved a layer of anxiety. To the point where it just wasn't worth it to smoke anymore.
And now I'm in the position where if I relay this experience to others I get "Dont you think you could try another strain?...". Its all come full circle.
Same. I used to love weed and smoked daily but I turned 30 a few years ago and started to notice that I don't respond to it the same. I struggle with mental stuff as it is and I noticed that it started making me worse. Used to be able to function on it but these days it just wrecks my self-esteem and makes me antisocial and fatigued. For me, it has nothing to do with legality or being paranoid. I just think my brain chemistry has changed and I've become a lot more sensitive to it.
I still struggle with staying off weed completely. My brain still tells me I want to smoke but then when I do it, I'm like, "oh. This is why I don't smoke anymore."
State of mind plays a huge roll, but I find consuming on a daily basis made most of the anxiety go away. Also it being legal because I'm a med patient helps. I can still get anxious sometimes though if I overdo it.
Yeah strain is a huge factor. Some might make you chill and give you couch lock, others make your mind go 200mph thinking deeply about everything (which if you think negatively is basically paranoia). State of mind and environment are also factors.
My cannabis induced anxiety came 100% from living in an illegal state. Amazing how removing a possibility of prison over a plant can help remove the paranoid aspects.
Hell, I live in SoCal as the quintessential weed archetype and even though I’ve never legit FREAKED OUT from it, I still get hella paranoid if I do it like, outside my house where people MIGHT be walking by. Mainly old people and kids, less so regular folks, and DEFINITELY rich snooty La Jolla types
When youre not on it your baseline anxiety is raised slightly. Then you smoke again to make it go away and you get your dopamine response. The cycle continues
Exactly, I smoke it all the time, i have no paranoia even when I am next to the military or cops (Mexico), they have never bothered me other than checkpoints, i can go to the movies, shopping, and any other normal everyday chore, 12 years, I've gotten used to it.
I’ve been a daily smoker for decades, the paranoia can still come on even with high tolerance and regular usage. Some strains hit the brain differently and affect people differently, straight sativas tend to make me deeply overthink things.
It’s not always paranoia, but if you think deeply about something from a negative state of mind, or have bad experiences/environment, I can see that easily manifesting as paranoia more on some strains than others.
I rarely come across a pure old school sativa anymore that puts me in that bad state, the type I have problems with is barely sold anywhere now, even most sativas sold now are a sativa dominant hybrid.
State of mind is the big one for me. I recently needed to go on a T break because of my mental health and smoking weed was just trapping me in my mind overthinking shit. Life's been easier without it. I do miss it and I'm looking forward to being able to smoke again once my life is more stable
A big bit for me is my ability to deal with the causes when I can sleep. Sleeping like shit over an extended period made dealing with things far harder. Just being able to reliability put my head down makes such an incredibly massive difference to all the other things.
My own anecdote is growers breeding for higher THC numbers that everyone’s systems ain’t built for. Once you go over your threshold the fun high becomes not so fun
This right here. I recently quit not just because I needed to after 15 years of heavy daily use, but because since legalization I cant find flower under 25%. It’s unnecessarily high now, capitalists ruined weed. I do know i also fried my brain a bit smoking more frequently than i should have for 15 years, but if there was the ability to get weed that was as high as it was in the 2000s this would have never become an issue. Fucking Jersey weed man, i do miss Washington State and Oregon weed.
If i remember correctly Jersey companies have been found recently to not only fudge numbers, but outrightly lie about pesticide use and general bad business practices.
Michael Pollan, in his book "The Botany of Desire" actually goes into the brain chemistry behind it. Basically your neocortical layer naturally builds filters to be able to focus. You have trillions (hyperbole?) of bits of info being sent to your brain at any given moment but you don't necessarily, this second need to be paying attention to how your shirt feels on your back. When changes in state or expectation happen, say water drips on your back and your shirt gets wet, your brain releases a small natural endocannabinoid, with anandamide that helps rewrite the filter your brain has at that moment. I'm not doing it justice, but thc is like a steroid version of the natural endocannabinoids and overcranks the filter reset/dissolution mechanism to where your suddenly getting a lot more of those trillion bits of data sans filter. Some training can help but most people shouldn't be overloading themselves like that. That's why we used to have shamans
Thc is actually far less efficacious at the CB receptors than endogenous ligands or synthetic full agonists. Its Emax is on the order of 20-50% of the maximal responses elicited by a full agonist. 11 OH thc retains the partial agonism of THC while improving its binding affinity. THC overwhelms the filter through straight overactivation via quantity rather than thc being especially powerful as a cb agonist or "steroid".
Whether you are smoking or eating it, marijuana can be relaxing—or it can cause feelings of anxiety, panic and paranoia. But despite the prevalence of these unnerving experiences—studies suggest frequent cannabis use is associated with higher odds of anxiety—scientists have little understanding as to why they occur.
“From a biological perspective, we really know almost nothing,” says Sachin Patel, a neuroscientist at Northwestern University.
In a bid to understand why one of the world’s most popular drugs summons such negative emotions, Patel and his colleagues investigated its effect on mice. The team’s findings, published last week in Nature Communications, reveal that, when given such a drug, rodents suffer adverse reactions similar to the paranoia human cannabis users feel. The effect is driven by a specific group of neurons in the central amygdala, a brain region that processes fear and anxiety.
The researchers injected mice with varying doses of CP55940, a synthetic cannabinoid that mimics the effects of tetrahydrocannabinol, or TCH, the main psychoactive compound in weed. Then they placed the mice in a cage with a petri dish full of fox urine. As expected, the animals became anxious, either fleeing the threatening odor or freezing in place. These responses were more extreme in mice who received larger doses—a relatable result if you’ve ever found yourself peering suspiciously through the living room blinds after one toke too many.
To tease out a connection between the animals’ behavior and their brain activity, the researchers turned to the central amygdala, which past research has shown to play a role in threat responses. Looking through small microscopes implanted in the mice’s heads, Patel’s team zoomed in on a particular subset of brain cells, called somatostatin neurons, as the animals reacted to the fox urine scent. “The take-home,” Patel says, “was that those cells were hyperactive when combining cannabinoids with the stress exposure.”
The researchers found that cannabinoids suppress the release of a neurotransmitter called gamma-aminobutyric acid, or GABA, which tamps down brain activity. In other words, the drug essentially weakens the central amygdala’s “brake,” Patel says, allowing fear and anxiety to run wild. When the researchers silenced the somatostatin neurons, the mice stopped trying so hard to avoid the threatening odor in their midst.
I’m sorry. But, I have a difficult time taking a study in which they drugged mice and then put them in a box with predator piss to be the most reliable way to judge anxiety responses that are chemically induced seriously.
Sure. Let’s pump someone full of surprise mystery drugs and drop them off in the middle of a police station to test how anxious the drugs make them… Just what the fuck kind of methodology is that…
I've not read the study so I can't be sure, but I imagine the researchers used both a control and an experimental condition. Perhaps both sets of mice were exposed to the fox urine and both groups acted with a degree of anxiety or whatever, and this anxiety was significantly greater in the the mice given the CP55940.
For the purposes of science I hope they used a control group. Still though, seems like a fucked up way to test this. If we have to scare the drugged up rats then couldn’t we just yell “Boo!” real loud or something? I’m no rat fear expert, but the ones I’ve seen already seem pretty on edge. Maybe the literal lab rats are more accustomed to humans though. Maybe it takes more to scare them.
I don’t know. I’m not a scientist. I just feel like there has to be another way to get answers that don’t involve as much urine.
I mean, if you use your neurons less, they make fewer connections. Or maybe the connections it makes strengthen the ones that you use for relaxation. When the effects of weed wear off, your brain will have to make an extra effort to make sense of the world or to perceive the world through its naked lens as it is. This may be shocking, hence the anxiety and the fear of the unknown.
But this is an opinion of mine. I've no idea what I'm talking about.
Fun story, I tried one of those “High Dose” THC drinks a few weeks ago out of curiosity. It contained 100mg of delta-9, which meant little to me. Pure ignorance on my part, I haven’t smoked or anything since I was a teenager, and I drank the whole thing. Big mistake, it hit me like a brick after a while. I kept myself calm, but my anxiety was through the roof, mainly because the high just kept getting more and more intense.
My wife got a kick out of it, until at one point she asked me if I was ok, because I was just sitting perfectly still staring at the tv, and I just started crying, no idea why. She also woke me up that night because I was shaking in my sleep, just really a bizarre experience.
It was a pretty negative experience, again probably because I drank the whole damn thing, but I don’t think I’ll be buying one of those again.
Bro I had a decent tolerance, I had like 3 sips of one of those drinks and I was hanging off my bed like a Salvador Dali painting. It was such a weird tingly feeling that I really DID not like, and that bud has only given me a handful of times.
Honestly. As a home grower, and someone who uses 1 hitters and a vaporizer now I can honestly say people are just smoking TOO much and they can't handle it, myself included.
I used to get paranoid hitting bongs, and smoking bowls with the neighbors, but now that I just chill and "take what I need" I absolutely do not have problems EVER until I am hanging out with those that smoke TOO MUCH.
Same here. Mild high 8/10 times, and then every once in a while really push it and know for a fact that greening out is a mindset. When I first started and was pushing HOW high I could get every night, I was getting brain zaps and my nerve issues were actually WORSENING, despite the reason I started smoking was to help them(and it was fun)
It’s a non specific amplifier. Individuals with chronic anxiety (most people these days) will have it amplified by cannabis. If you don’t know how to relax and get your body into a parasympathetic state, weed isn’t gonna force it to happen. It’s gonna amplify however you’re already feeling.
Also modern strains have been bred for maximum THC content and other cannabinoids like CBD have been forgotten. CBD tempers the head high from THC and brings it more into the body, preventing any paranoia.
Sure but I’m talking about flower. Most weed these days has no cbd. You can get 1:1 hemp strains online through the farm bill loophole but that’s getting shut down end of this year.
It’s so weird that it’s a biological process that’s potentially causing that paranoia, but just acknowledging it and knowing it will pass in a few minutes, makes it go away almost instantaneously for me.
The plant can only make a certain amount of cannabinoids. The marketing became more thc = gets you higher = better. The consumers weren’t knowledgeable enough to know about the regulatory compounds and the entourage effect, so they paid more for higher THC. This just reinforced the whole paradigm. Plants were breed to produce more and more THC at the expense of all other cannabinoids (there are more than 100). Now we are at a spot where flower is almost all THC and, in my opinion, is unenjoyable. I miss the boof I used to be able to buy off the street that was like 5% THC. My friends and I could smoke for hours and enjoy ourselves.
Because they are idiots. I always keep CBD around when I consume THC. If I get to high I just take a toke of some CBD until I'm at an comfortable level of high.
Gene dominance. Think about it as a yellow or black lab. Same dog really. But differ coat colors. Those colors are dominant and like begats like. But Most likely the plant is only going to produce thc or cbd. Hybrid populations require active maintenance to keep the mixed genepool. Now in an outdoor crop that has cbd plants in the mix when you mix the seeds or make hash from the crop there will still be 20-25% of the population that has cbd in it. But that’s because cannabis is wind pollinated in naturally multiple plants are used to make seed.
Because consumers have demanded higher THC. You can still get old fashioned ganja with high CBD…look for something around a 1:1 ratio. Eg. 10 mg THC and 10 mg CBD.
Studies indicate that CBD has a regulating effect, controlling the absorption of THC in the brain.
I can't speak for everyone but I have noticed that I feel must less anxious after I stopped smoking/vaping. That said I have mental health issues that a lot of people don't have so that's most likely at the root of this issue. The war on drugs is still dumb.
True paranoia, like staring through the blinds scared someone is coming as described in the article, is not a harmless side effect of cannabis. This is a psychotic symptoms of cannabis use. You should probably stop smoking if you experience this. Psychosis kindles, by this we mean experiencing psychotic symptoms puts you at risk of developing more psychotic symptoms, and of developing a psychotic illness.
Not here to kill everyones buzz, most of the population can smoke cannabis in moderation without going psychotic, but it is dangerous to normalise paranoia from cannabis. If your friends tell you that you act really weird when you smoke or after, please consider stopping smoking.
It does if you are using the wrong strain for your mental health. Sativas can do this. From what I can tell, it just depends on if the person already has anxiety. If you are prone to it, it would just stay away from sativas in general.
True enlightenment is realizing that strains are mostly just made-up bullshit. Terpenes can modulate highs in different ways, but I would never trust a “sativa/indica/hybrid” label.
I tried a bunch of strains in my youth because my loser pothead friends kept saying this.
"Broo you just gotta try the right strain bro just trust us it'll be amazing!"
Panic attack every time. Never once did I have an experience even remotely close to positive while high. Never had an issue with anxiety before, or since.
Genetic variation makes a huge difference in THC and CBD levels, and terpenes are a very large component to the mental effects. There needs to be more research, but there are already strains that are highly effective for anxiety and treating PTSD
I would still steer clear of the sativa and saliva leaning hybrids. Smoking too much weed in general is a bad idea. Moderation is best to avoid anxiety type side effects.
Getting really high on a psychedelic drug can definitely make people anxious, because it's an intense experience. You've got to make an effort to relax, embrace the experience, and stay in the present moment. Relax. Take some deep breaths. Psychedelics require you to be in the proper mindset, and to make a conscious effort to allow the experience to happen and not get all freaked out cause you're really high. It's just a basic psychedelic skill set.

Because getting fucked up is a good gimmick to sell for. In reality though most of use just want to take the edge off.

Here in Belgium we prefer to never legalize it and keep doing the same prohibition and expect different results.

I’ve smoked daily for 45 years and can’t say that I’ve ever really experienced either anxiety or paranoia.
comicgeek1128 | an hour ago
I can't speak for everyone but I have noticed that I feel must less anxious after I stopped smoking/vaping. That said I have mental health issues that a lot of people don't have so that's most likely at the root of this issue. The war on drugs is still dumb.

PSA here from a psychiatrist:

This too! Accepting that you should not smoke weed is a great idea, when you struggle with it too much.

I have the exact opposite, medical weed helps A LOT with my general high anxiety level and stress caused by my ADHD
pwatershed | 3 hours ago
It does if you are using the wrong strain for your mental health. Sativas can do this. From what I can tell, it just depends on if the person already has anxiety. If you are prone to it, it would just stay away from sativas in general.
trillamane_01 | an hour ago
Or maybe some people just don't respond well to weed and we should accept that for what it is.
Goblikon_ | an hour ago
True enlightenment is realizing that strains are mostly just made-up bullshit. Terpenes can modulate highs in different ways, but I would never trust a “sativa/indica/hybrid” label.
AltruisticCoelacanth | 3 hours ago
I tried a bunch of strains in my youth because my loser pothead friends kept saying this.
"Broo you just gotta try the right strain bro just trust us it'll be amazing!"
Panic attack every time. Never once did I have an experience even remotely close to positive while high. Never had an issue with anxiety before, or since.
Talongar | 2 hours ago
That's interesting, was there a particular anchor or idea behind the panic?
MarionberryEmpty9816 | 2 hours ago
How do you know you got the correct strain? If you didn't buy it in pharmacies, then you shouldn't talk with that kind of confidence
MiserableKink | an hour ago
Buying "selfed" genetics and growing it out yourself from a trusted source.
MiserableKink | an hour ago
"Strain" is meaningless and has been shown to be by a study done at boulder.
grunkage | 3 hours ago
Genetic variation makes a huge difference in THC and CBD levels, and terpenes are a very large component to the mental effects. There needs to be more research, but there are already strains that are highly effective for anxiety and treating PTSD
Legitimate-Mind-9194 | 2 hours ago
It absolutely does not for me it eliminates it 😅
elrevan | an hour ago
I don’t it causes anxiety I think anxious people are just anxious and it’s harder to deal with high.
pwatershed | 32 minutes ago
