From a purely strategic standpoint, how does giving Russia money to restart negotions make any sense? Couldn't they just say "thanks" and use that money to continue the war?
It's a great strategy if you want to help Russia, which clearly Trump wants to do. Russia is out of money and Putin is turning the screw before the midterms.
You know what's the last chapter of the "Art of the Deal"?
When no tactics were successful, put your pants down, turn your bare ass checks to your opponent.
That's what's Trump is doing.
Putin and Trump both know this will hurt Trump in the midterm. So the damage from the kompromat must be way worse than the damage from release the Russian assets. Putin is desperate and realizes Trump will cease to be an asset in less than two years.
The US has given Ukraine 190+ billion and you think the US wants to help Russia. People can't really think like this. The US goal is to end the war and unfortunately Ukraine can't end it. I would see the only other option as dealing with Russia because they aren't going anywhere. People are completely delusional if they believe Ukraine is somehow going to take control of Russia. Ukraine has been able to hold them but for how long. How many people on both sides need to die before Ukraine folds. Or are they hoping Putin will die of old age at some point. I'm sure China is buying and supplying shit with Russia to keep their economy flowing.
I'm not speaking for Ukraine my point was to figure out what people who want the war to continue see the victory as being. What is the end goal? Is it a fantasy that will never be achieved I would say likely but so far the only thing I can tell by this thread is that a lot of people want the war to continue.
The end goal is for Russia to give up on the invasion, or in other words, for the war to end. Do you understand that it's Russia that is invading Ukraine and Ukraine is just defending itself?
Beyond the fact that the previous administration was the one giving all the help so it doesn't really count towards what is happening now. This is the worst take I have ever read. First of Ukraine doesn't want control of Russia. Who are we to tell the ukranian people they should give up for their won good. Not to mention this emboldens Russia because they know we will make whoever they attack capitulate in the name of peace that we could have if russia just stopped attacking them. I really hope you're a bot.
My point was what does success look like to someone with your opinion? Russia backing out of Ukraine and giving all the land they have taken back. Then Russia give Ukraine billions to rebuild their infrastructure? Do you have any realistic ideas? Or just relying on a fantasy solution while millions of people are dying from a war that shouldn't even be occuring.
That war that you say shouldn't be occurring was started by Russia. What's to stop them from just attacking someone else? Especially if they know even if someone wants to fight them we will just tell tell them give up because your going to lose anyway. In an ideal world they would get their land back and acceptance into NATO so they don't have to worry about being attacked again. It's so weird to me that you seem to think that you feeling icky about people dying somehow trumps the fact that people are fighting for their right to exist as Ukrainians and not be put under Putins control. Nobody wants people to die but let's be honest all these deaths are on Russian hands.
Trump didn’t force Putin to attack Ukraine. The US has provided tons of support for Ukraine and punished Russia. Thanks for answering my question though. In your mind Ukraine getting land back and joining NATO will mean success. In your mind you foresee Putin folding because Ukraine is too strong. I just can’t realistically see that occurring for many different logical reasons. It's good to hope and fantasize but sooner or later reality needs to be faced. How many human lives are the land resources worth. I suppose some rich leader will have to decide that.
It's almost as if a certain cheeto is a Russian implant.
After all, everything he does weakens the US, US allies, Ukraine, and NATO while strengthening Russia, helping Russia's war effort, and easing pressure on Russia while glazing Putin.
In case you've missed it, Trump has been Russia's ally since 2012, at least. Russia has been funding and supporting through bots far-right movements and personalities for decades. Nigel Farage, Marie Le Pen, etc. And in US it was Alex Jones, for example, way before Trump began his run.
Blaming Ukraine became a convenient excuse to help Russia and pretend that the current problem with oil and its products isn't because of the Iran war. Most of all, Trump is a narcissist. He does quid-pro-quo. Paid pardons, stealing money everywhere, from Venezuela to his Board of Piss... Putin most likely offered something. Trump is panicked about the elections, so it is most likely to do with them.
Russia and Israel take turns using Epstein-sourced kompromat to extort their desired policy decisions from Republicans and Democrats in our Federal government.
I don't think there's any compromising evidence that could "kill" Trump. Look how being best buddies with Epstein just slid off of him. Right-wing (Billionaire-owned, mainstream) media let it go. His cult believes he was actually an informant. Media sane-washes Trump at every turn. He wasn't wrong that he could shoot someone and get away with it. Fox News would proclaim it was self-defense and the person was a terrorist, CNN would "question" if it was legal and leave it at just a question, as to appear impartial.
The only thing that can defeat them is reality and their own incompetence. Once it gets bad enough. When living is unaffordable for most people. I don't believe there is any compromising material that can get rid of Trump. Throw him a few million or billion and he'll play. I don't believe it is more complicated than that. Ukraine doesn't have money to bribe him like Russia does. And Israel is tied to the billionaires. Their biggest industry is tied to companies like Palantir, arms, surveillance, etc.
Likely far longer than 2012. That "Agent Krasnov" article that simultaneously was removed from pretty much every search engine and news website almost immediately after publication certainly ruffled a bunch of feathers.
Yes, that goes back to 1986 or so, I believe. However, he didn't really influence politics very much back then. I mean, without "the Apprentice," Trump wouldn't exist. He was a laughing stock, no bank would lend him money, Russian mafia was the only source of money he could get back then, thanks to years of laundering their dirty money through his casinos.
Trump has nothing to say about it anyway since the assets are held by the EU. He can ask politely if they would consider this, but given how he has treated Europe I doubt at this point they would pick up the phone if his number were on the caller ID.
I think Trump (or whoever is actually running the country) is just using this as a pretext to further degrade NATO and the EU prior to Putin's planned invasion of the Baltics this fall. Notice how he is ratcheting up the anti EU pressure? Having Musk shut down Starlink in the midst of a major russian missile offensive by Putin, Ukrainian and retaliatory attacks?
My fear is that the US could exert pressure on the EU because of their reliance on US diesel after the Russian sanctions, which made US diesel 32% of EU import. Also, 55% of passenger vehicles run on diesel compared to just 3% in the US.
The point is the diesel crisis is affecting europe at a more structural level. That puts Trump in a position to make demands, and he could basically threaten to withhold diesel if they refuse to play along with unfreezing Russian assets.
Obviously this is speculation, but there's blood in the water and Trump fancies himself a shark.
Because this is just another example of American attempt to steal some money: "Russian assets be unfrozen and transferred to a US-controlled entity to restart peace talks." Basically Venezuela 2.0
It would and it already said 'lol, no way' . At this point trying to grift and steal at every perceived opportunity is just a force of habit I guess.
I wonder if they try to pressure Ukraine instead. Recent Starlink restriction was definitely an attempt to remind Zelensky, that US still has some cards.
I think the interest payments has been going to Ukraine for a while already. The real point of contention is the funds themselves: they are frozen, but untouched. Some countries want to go 'screw it, why EU taxpayers are on the hook when Russian is the one destroying Ukraine?' while others (like Belgium) worry that actually seizing those funds will cause a lot of problems later.
Well for every day that Ukraine holds, Poland and the EU have another day to prepare for the inevitable. Ukraine has become the stalwart of the west and buys time for the EU to ramp up production, which they seem to be doing, based on their borrowing.
Every dollar that the EU sends to Ukraine is worth 10 in defense, so it's a no brainer.
“Prepare for the inevitable” Yeah bro, I am sure the country that can’t even conquer Ukraine is just itching to attack the EU and Nato. This shit is so retarded.
You're obviously out of the loop on this so I'll inform you. Russia has been engaged in acts of sabotage, arson, cyber warfare, and so on, which has seen a major uptick the last two months. This includes bombing busy German train stations and drones with C4 blowing up on German tarmacs, finding weapons caches - likely for assassinations, arson attacks on robotics facilities in the Baltic states, and terrorist attacks on British soil. Also, France just found a bunch of bombs at a central power substation.
They're already doing it.
Many European countries are reinstating mandatory conscription or other forms of service, and they're borrowing hand over fist.
You can't even build a bridge in Poland without it being reinforced to support the weight of a tank column.
Almost all the frozen assets are under EU control. About $310 billion. Trump is under orders from Putin to get as many dollars into the russian economy in preparation for the fall attack on the Baltic nations, and Trump knows Europe is not going to give a dime of the money to Putin, in fact their most recent plan seems to be centered on using the frozen funds to aid Ukraine.
When the Trump plan falls flat on its face and it will, he can and will use that to further degrade ties to our NATO allies. Possibly to the point of standing aside when Putin attacks the EU. That would be a de facto dissolution of NATO. Comrade Donald just cannot get enough of his boss's dick can he?
I mean they aint but one side used to provide arms while the other use arms, its not like they are giving into the buffon but unlike with the first 3 times he signed a peace deal without brining Ukraine to the table this time he is also threatening them if they dont ~~stop resisting~~ make peace.
Because Tramp is helping bailout Putin. Tramp is in debt to Russia. Putin has video of Tramp raping children and probably worse. Tramp doesn't give a fuck about democracy or the US.
For whom? It could make sense for Trump short term, if Russia would give him something before the midterms.
At least he could think that, ultimately Russia would propably fuck him over even before the election and step up their demands, they use strong man tactic even with their perceived "friendly" nations and politics.
Well, from a strategic POV, trumps power is likely to become more limited once the GOP loses the midterms so he needs to hand Putin as much as possible now in case he’s not able to afterwards.
Yes. And that’s why you’d never make it in the Trump Administration, you are both using your brain and are concerned more about the geopolitical strength of the US rather than how you can get personal access to billions in stolen Russian/Venezuelan/Saudi wealth and misallocated US taxpayer cash.
It is so ridiculous on its face that you have to assume the goal is not peace talks, but just to give Russia money. You do not give away your bargaining chip to get the other party to the table.
The profit incentive already exists when sanctions are applied. This is just helping Russia, pure and simple. If profit incentive could bring Russia to the negotiating table, it would have happened a long time ago because lifting sanctions gradually would mean profit for them.
> how does giving Russia money to restart negotions make any sense?
It doesn't. Its just Trump following orders from his boss, Putin. There are no peace talks with Russia. Either Russia withdraws and pays reparations to Ukraine, or they remain at war.
Only lying MAGA Republican Nazis pretend to anything else.
If one is beginning negotiations with a party that does not trust you, one may have to start off with some preemptive concessions before you are taken seriously.
In other words, it is used by folks who are negotiating from a position of weakness.
I just don't think Russia is in a place to make any such demands. They lose 100 soldiers for every football field they take. They've become an energy importer. Their inflation is at 14%. They're in absolute shambles.
From a negotiation standpoint, it would be far more effective to tell Russia that they will stop the war or we will triple sanctions. Hence why there are sanctions on Russia in the first place.
If you sit down to negotiate with a gangster, then you've already lost because to them, only the weak need to negotiate. The only thing they respond to is power. You don't ask them to stop - you make stopping the only available option. This is literally the only language they understand.
You are right, but we can't expect a bitch to demand anything from their owner. And that's how trump feels in relation to putler.
This whole last 2 years, orange turd demanded a lot of things from Ukraine, he slandered them endlessly, yet he never demanded anything from putler, in contrary, he never said a bad word about putler, he once was close, when his wife told him about bombed children, yet one phonecall with his ,, friend" when he explained himself and all is good again.
To end this war, we(collective we) need to push ruzzia, USA is doing completely opposite thing, and is pushing the attacked.
But trump doesn't want that, he wants his bribe, and he isn't gonna get it after he pushes orln ruzzians
Whether Russia is in a place to make such demands depends on the battlefield realities. And since it doesn't look like russia will lose this any time soon while it does look like Ukraine is gonna have a hard time maintaining the war effort over next winter, they're absolutely in a place to make demands.
The question for now remains whether Ukraine wants peace now and less destruction to rebuild, or whether they want to dig the hole they're in even deeper.
They have like thousands of sanctions. I don't think they work that well. Also they have a vertical industry. They have missile air supremacy over UA since the lack of anti air defense ammo. and UA lost the Odessa ports, which was 60 % of the exports, not to mention the loss of logistics.
It’s part of Russia’s victory conditions. Has nothing to do with talks. Their demands for peace are the same as they were at the start of the war. Ukrainian surrender, all nations past Germany removed from NATO, removal of all sanctions.
I mean, I might take it more seriously if it wasn’t ol’ Donny in office who has Putin and many other ogliarchs he’s well connected to to thank for his whole life soooo
We never pay any-one Dane-geld,
No matter how trifling the cost;
For the end of that game is oppression and shame,
And the nation that plays it is lost!
Both sides need to be willing to negotiate. The hope of further sanctions relief incentivizes Russia to seek a diplomatic end, while pressuring Ukraine to lessen its maximalist demands by showing support isn’t endless.
So basically if you saw one kid trying to hit another kid with a baseball bat, you'd hand money to the kid with the bat and blame the one without the bat
Analogies between countries as individuals is as unserious as comparing a national budget to a household budget.
But if I saw two kids beating each other to death and was unwilling to directly intervene for fear of the bigger kid drawing his gun and shooting up the neighborhood… yeah, I would try letting the big kid have $20 and one of the smaller kid’s toys to diffuse the immediate situation.
Their stated demands right now include restitution of all territories, reparations, security guarantees, and war crimes tribunals for Russian leadership.
Those are maximalist demands. Understandable to desire as the offended party, but completely unrealistic as an actual end.
I reckon everyone in the world but you understands negotiations, almost invariably, asking for more than you think you'll get so that concessions are built into the process. An ally pressuring those concessions as opposed to the enemy is completely undercutting said negotiations
Negotiations are hard to start if there is no common ground for agreement. Ukraine has signaled they are willing to discuss Crimea… otherwise, they have repeatedly shown they won’t budge much at all.
“A nation can survive its fools, and the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and carries his banner openly.
But the traitor moves amongst those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself.
For the traitor appears not a traitor; he speaks in accents familiar to his victims, and he wears their face and their arguments, he appeals to the baseness that lies deep in the hearts of all men.
He rots the soul of a nation, he works secretly and unknown in the night to undermine the pillars of the city, he infects the body politic so that it can no longer resist. A murderer is less to fear.” - Marcus Tullius Cicero (circa 42 B.C.)
Although this is a good quote, it's not translated well in certain parts. There is no equivalent of 'nation' or 'nation-state' in the ancient or classical world, or in Roman Latin. Nation-states and the idea of the nation didn't exist until the conference of Westphalia in the 17th century, and nation-states didn't begin spreading until the 18th century.
Yes, they had a state and thought of local/regional people as 'a people' to some extent, but nothing like a nation. More city-state identities, and other local identities, embedded in a larger state/imperial system.
You talk about Trump like he is a random guy and not the president. Like it or not what the president says is what the US says, and what he choses to do what the US do.
Trump is the Head of State. If an internal mechanism is not available to stop his diplomatic actions, then those actions are the policy of the United States.
Traitorous sack of shit. Trump and Musk have completely undermined the sovereignty of our nation. If they are are allowed to continue, it means that our nation has collapsed. Rule of law and the constitution are defunct, and we are under attack by a domestic enemy.
I mean, let’s do a funny thing here and give Trump the benefit of the doubt. Let’s entertain the thought that he’s actually trying to achieve some kind of a smart and sustainable deal here.
How the fuck folding on everything, retreating on every condition, and just doing one-directional concessions - how can this be called smart negotiation? It is just comically opposite.
Friend, the thing you fear happened quite a long time ago. It's good though that you are finally prepared to recognize it. Because until we admit a thing is true, we cannot do anything to fix it.
In this context, Ukraine’s use of Starshield (the military version of the Starlink platform used by Ukraine’s drones and air defense systems) was just crippled without justification.
Why throw away that bargaining chip? I used to think the mossad had something truly dirty on him and that’s why he went forward with the war on Iran, but I’m starting to think he’s truly an idiot. Weird days
The damage Donald Trump is doing to Ukraine, Europe, the US and the whole world is way, way worse than a couple of rape victims. What he has done as a president should be enough to lock him up for life, whatever blackmail material Putin could have on him should not even be relevant.
Sad that you don't have an ounce of sympathy or empathy for the child victims of rape. Let's just pass a law that says Republicans can be pedophiles, consequence free.
Edit: must add the /s to "Let's just pass a law that says Republicans can be pedophiles, consequence free" because apparently the context isn't clear...
Honestly, that would be better. At least then it would make sense that a US president is that stupid. Problem is, the simpler explanation is that he is that stupid. Master of image and convincing people, but dogshit at running things. Dude bankrupted a casino ffs
Failed? He is succeeding in his job of destroying America, destroying alliances, making a ton of money for Russia, and allowing sex trafficking to continue, possibly stronger than ever, and he’s even getting all his criminal friends off scott-free. I’d say he’s succeeding at everything he could have asked for. He even got away with stealing classified documents. And he continues to destroy national US monuments. What he says he wants and what he actually does are very different.
Putin's bitch. 2016 was bought. The gop probably is so rife with Israeli and Russian corruption and bribery you could probably sue the entire org under rico.
Generally, yes. The point is to make peace more profitable than war. Promising forever sanctions and nothing for all the previously invested lives and treasure doesn’t accomplish that.
Ideally, the cost of continued war would be enough cause for peace, but
You have a strange way of making peace more profitable than war. What Trump is doing is making the war cheaper, Russia will already profit from peace.
Trump, if he actually wanted to force Putin to the peace table, would be making the war more expensive for Russia. Instead he is making it more expensive for Ukraine. Ukraine did not start this war.
If Russia can stop this war any moment they want and go home. Ukraine can stop the war any moment they want and lose their country, their independence, their culture and their lives.
For some reason, Trump has decided that Ukraine cost him the 2020 election and he wants to make Ukraine pay.
Russia is not the US. They don't even have higher GDP than most US states. Their conventional military is weaker than many other developing countries. Merely because they possess a bunch of old nukes, most of which aren't probably even maintained or functional, doesn't mean they are a superpower.
I think the US should have seen more consequences for Afghanistan and Iraq, on that you are correct, but the US is the current foremost superpower (China is the second). The EU could be considered the third, but that is debatable. Russia is nowhere close to the US or China's level, where most consequences don't exist for aggressive actions. Just because superpowers are difficult to hold responsible, doesn't mean others shouldn't see consequences or incur costs for their actions. Russia is too weak to enforce their terms/conditions, so there is no reason for anyone to consider them.
Imagine if having nukes was the only requirement for superpower status. Pakistan and India would be considered superpowers. France would be considered a superpower; France has nukes, arguably has a stronger conventional military than Russia, and has a higher GDP (GDP isn't the end-all-be-all of measuring economic strength/power, but it's pretty important). Do we consider France a superpower? No.
Just because Russia was an imperial power in the past, such as during Imperial Russia and the Soviet Union (which was mostly a vehicle for Russian nationalism after Lenin) doesn't mean it's a superpower. Lots of former imperial powers, who were actually superpowers (like the UK, who also has nukes, a stronger military, and higher GDP than Russia) aren't considered superpowers anymore.
Russia thinks merely because it is imperialistic, that it is an imperial power or superpower, when it is not. Their conventional military has already failed, so they resort to nuclear threats which they can never execute because it would be catastrophic for them and much of the world.
It does deserve to see consequences, and isn't entitled to a 'pound of flesh' because no one is, though some get it because they're actually superpowers (like the US or China). Russia is not strong enough to enforce its terms/conditions, and therefore there is no reason to consider them.
...and do you know what? To get the US to leave Afghanistan, did the Taliban's allies make things easier or harder on the US? They made things harder on the US. They made it so the cost of war was unsustainable. Imagine if Iran instead of helping the Taliban, instead offered sweet oil deals to the US, offered to stop funding terrorism, offered to help make Islam a religion that believed in peace, offered to allow women to get educated and wear western clothing?
No, Iran did none of that...they made life hell for the aggressor. Why is the US making life easier for the aggressor hoping that somehow gets the aggressor to give up?
As for nuclear weapons, no one is using any nukes. The world will unite against the next country that uses nukes in a war. Everyone knows that. Even China would turn against Russia.
>To get the US to leave Afghanistan, did the Taliban's allies make things easier or harder on the US?
What allies? Iran wasn't really helping them. They had some tribal connections in Pakistan, but the official government there was licking the American boot with all kinds of obscene tongue.
>they made life hell for the aggressor. Why is the US making life easier for the aggressor hoping that somehow gets the aggressor to give up?
Eh, the Taliban retreated for large periods of time without actively attacking the US in anything but sporadic attacks. It was more about letting the US tire itself out... which is less of an option for Ukraine, a whole state with an economy and industry that isn't hidden in mountainous caves.
>As for nuclear weapons, no one is using any nukes.
No one is using nukes right now. If we actively joined the fight or Russia felt it was losing to Ukraine in a way that might upset the government's standing, they might do something stupid (like invading Ukraine in the first place?).
Profit incentive already exists when sanctions are applied. So, profit incentive/motive already exists. You're using the very logic by which sanctions work. Stopping the war is already more profitable than continuing when they are sanctioned. If they came to the negotiating table in earnest, some sanctions would be removed, and they would profit, but they don't. If they stop the war, sanctions are removed, and they profit.
So, your logic makes no sense, because that profit incentive already exists. Russia knew this when they invaded, and they know this now, with every new day, and still choose to continue the war.
This proves Russia does not want to end the war. If they did, their behaviors would reflect this.
Negations, Putin has said on record they want the region, and will not stop until they get the region. All “peace” talks have been a non negotiable of Ukraine giving up its territory, with no real concessions for Ukraine.
Peace, lifting the blockade on its ports, conceding a permanent security arrangement short of NATO, and letting Ukraine start bouncing back from its own personal Great Depression are concessions. Or at least, better concessions than the US gave to the Taliban or Iraq after finally having to walk away.
Its not realistic to expect Russia to give Ukraine cakes and ice cream and apologies.
''Also, we should just give Russia some rockets too. Theirs running a bit low from attacking all those civilian targets! For opening negotiations of course''.
honestly...what else do people need to see to understand our president is comprised and is a russian asset. tom clancy wouldn't write this story because it would be too unbearable but here we are.
That makes absolutely no sense. It's yet again another gift to putin by Trump, without any reciprocity (that we know of, of course, I suspect some shady deal with Trump family)
You have to understand that the Trump Organization is a modern mafia. Literally everything is about how he can get a cut, or how he can hurt someone until he gets a cut. That's it. There is no governing North Star, no morale compass to guide decisions. Even the national defense strategy was rewritten and basically sums up as 'show me the money'.
Trump is a traitor to the USA. Unfreezing assets will do nothing to change Putin’s goals & ambitions. In fact, it’s rewarding him for steadily escalating his attacks on Ukraine and gives him more money to finance his war. Anything that makes Russia stronger is by definition increasing the Russian threat to American security and economic well-being. Why would Trump reward & strengthen an active enemy of the United States?
The problem is that most of these assets that are freezed are in Europe, I can't see Europe agreeing at the moment. Also some capital was already unfreezed to help pay the reconstruction of Ukrainian sites destroyed by Russian bombing.
Remember when there was that situation where some Russian guy wrote a policy position and gave it to some American guys and somehow it got out and seemed official and someone like Marco Rubio, or maybe someone else, not sure, had to be like, haha, no, nope, not official, we kick drafts of things around sometimes, haha, nothing to see here. Look over there!
And then just the other day when Maddow pointed out that Trump talked about Russia swelling us tons of diesel. America apparently doesn’t talk about diesel in tons, but Russia does?
He’s convinced himself that he believes high gas prices are Ukraine’s fault and they should be punished. Trump is an amoral doddering old idiot. The rest of the Republicans are even more pathetic for following him. Of course, Trump’s actions will work opposite as intended.
We all know that his end game is another corrupt spin which will give him, Jared and fucking Vitkoff some extra money in NordStream or another corrupt venture.
He couldn’t care less what releasing money to Russia (because that’s where it will indirectly end up after his “commission”) will just prolong the war or result in Ukraine collapsing resulting in most likely humanitarian crisis because you can see orcs slaughter civilians indiscriminately.
The only thing that counts to this bag of orange diarrhoea is the pile of cash he can put his disproportionally small but grabby hands on. Nothing else can steal his focus for long.
Who cares about Iran war, Venezuela takeover, ICE playing straight from SS playbook, all humanitarian crises caused or any pdf files - that’s all so last year…
Fuck Donald Trump, fuck Putin, fuck Elon Musk. May every oligarch across the planet catch a pox and die of hemorrhagic fever. Ukraine should absolutely not be put in this position by an ALLIED country. Sanctions on Russia were made LAW by congress.
The Russians know that Trump is going to lose control after the midterms so they are cranking up the pressure to get the favors that he promised them whilst he still can.
Tell us you don’t have a secret agent in the White House without telling us you don’t have a secret agent in the White🤣🤣🤣 I don’t see how this could be more obvious that he is not on the side of the American people or the European people for that matter he’s 100% for Putin
We are a fucking vassal state of Russia thanks to Trump and what they have on him. Which means we are a vassal state to China since Russia is owned by China now.
This is typical Trump tactics. He also told Canada to give up concessions in order to restart trade negotiations. Canada did so, and it ultimately didn't amount to anything.
If the world pays attention, they'll know that this is for nothing.
It's funny because Brussels has just said that the US aren't involved in the negotiations and have no claim to the assets that are held in Europe. More bargaining with something they don't have, bit like their potash deal recently.
Russian agent Krasnov, known as Agent Orange in the west is certainly doing a lot of work for his Russian masters these days.
Those 1980s business bail outs sure are paying dividends.
You can never be surprised by Americans anymore, as a large portion of his supporters now lick Putin's boot and drive their pickup truck with Russian diesel.
Not the first time things are going sorting well for Ukraine and a great power changes the rules.
Putin dead is not what USA wants, so expect USA to start funding Russia on the side or do more to keep them afloat.
After all, that is what friends do or so Trump thinks
As much as he likes to pose as a strongman, Trump is so damn weak and stupid. Yeah, let’s first give up on all our leverage and then try to negotiate. What an idiot
The only way this could make sense is if the assets were given to Ukraine as an alternative to not negotiating. Either come to the table or Ukraine gets it all.
Russia has a very public habit of lying with a straight face. They have zero credibility and should not be given any amount of good-faith bargaining power.
How is Putin going to pay for a war and buy Republican politicians? think people, he needs Trump to free up that cash so Trump can 'win' the dictatorship.
Zelensky actually honored Trump's fake energy ceasefire, Putin ignored him.
yet Trumps threatens and bullies Ukraine to surrender, cripples their offensive and defensive operations by turning off Starlink and US intel... and Trump publicly praises Putin, Russia gets sanctions lifted, assets unfrozen.
Can I just make a prediction … He will do everything in his power to strengthen Russia , protect them economically and will bash any threat to Russia . Including ( or perhaps specifically) his own country and the United States allies . After the predicable and immediate destruction that follows he will blame Democrats and Ukraine .. and NATO and Canada
What school of negotiations did Trump go to? This is exactly like Afghanistan when he released all the in-prisioned Taliban soldiers. Assuring the other sides victory.
He has got to be trolling at this point. How do other republicans and American voters not see through the folly that is Trump international policy. Where are the grown ups to guide this toddler brained maniac?
People keep asking - whats the kompromat? Surely they must have something on him.
But honestly, we are talking about trump - the most easy to corrupt person that i know of. All russians had to do was dangle some promises od wealth in front of him, and it would have been over.
How many billions was it kushner is saying we need to “return to russia”? I can only assume that this is from the same corrupt tree, and so what ic that money goes to support iran in killing our troops, “they’re all just suckers and losers “ (-djt)
Gonna give them something for nothing because that’s what that is. We’re going to unfreeze assets just to restart talks. Talks aren’t a tangible reciprocal response. It’s bullshit and platitude. This administration is an absolute joke. They’re amateurs
Every single thing that Agent Krasnov does seems aimed at helping Putin and not the democratic country that's under assault. Putin was the aggressor in an illegal war when he invaded Ukraine, and he should get out of Ukraine without those assets being unfrozen for more so-called peace talks, which to date seem to consist entirely of Putin declaring what he wants and Trump trying to strong-arm President Zelenskyy into capitulation. If at all viable, those assets ought to be seized as reparations for Ukraine in my opinion.
Trump is Putin’s puppet. I’m surprised it took this long.
Remember when Kevin McCarthy said:
"There's...there's two people, I think, Putin pays: Rohrabacher and
Trump...[laughter]...swear to God."

House Majority Leader (R-CA)

From a purely strategic standpoint, how does giving Russia money to restart negotions make any sense? Couldn't they just say "thanks" and use that money to continue the war?
Good_Air_7192 | 13 hours ago
It's a great strategy if you want to help Russia, which clearly Trump wants to do. Russia is out of money and Putin is turning the screw before the midterms.
kittenTakeover | 9 hours ago
Yep. Donald sees bribes and favorable treatment in Russia in the future if he helps the brutal dictator while he's president.

Technically, it can be is last bribe depending on the mid term. However, corruption and more bribes may prevent a lost.... :/ (I'm afraid of that)

JLarn | 6 hours ago
The end goal is for Russia to give up on the invasion, or in other words, for the war to end. Do you understand that it's Russia that is invading Ukraine and Ukraine is just defending itself?

Ill_Consequence | 8 hours ago
Beyond the fact that the previous administration was the one giving all the help so it doesn't really count towards what is happening now. This is the worst take I have ever read. First of Ukraine doesn't want control of Russia. Who are we to tell the ukranian people they should give up for their won good. Not to mention this emboldens Russia because they know we will make whoever they attack capitulate in the name of peace that we could have if russia just stopped attacking them. I really hope you're a bot.
caponewgp420 | 7 hours ago
My point was what does success look like to someone with your opinion? Russia backing out of Ukraine and giving all the land they have taken back. Then Russia give Ukraine billions to rebuild their infrastructure? Do you have any realistic ideas? Or just relying on a fantasy solution while millions of people are dying from a war that shouldn't even be occuring.
Scrandon | 5 hours ago
A full Russian retreat is both realistic and just. Now go fuck yourself.
Ill_Consequence | 5 hours ago
That war that you say shouldn't be occurring was started by Russia. What's to stop them from just attacking someone else? Especially if they know even if someone wants to fight them we will just tell tell them give up because your going to lose anyway. In an ideal world they would get their land back and acceptance into NATO so they don't have to worry about being attacked again. It's so weird to me that you seem to think that you feeling icky about people dying somehow trumps the fact that people are fighting for their right to exist as Ukrainians and not be put under Putins control. Nobody wants people to die but let's be honest all these deaths are on Russian hands.
caponewgp420 | 3 hours ago
Trump didn’t force Putin to attack Ukraine. The US has provided tons of support for Ukraine and punished Russia. Thanks for answering my question though. In your mind Ukraine getting land back and joining NATO will mean success. In your mind you foresee Putin folding because Ukraine is too strong. I just can’t realistically see that occurring for many different logical reasons. It's good to hope and fantasize but sooner or later reality needs to be faced. How many human lives are the land resources worth. I suppose some rich leader will have to decide that.

😱 Putin would never do that! /s

Usakami | an hour ago

AcanthisittaWeird94 | 12 hours ago
It makes sense when you think about that trump is russian asset.
New_Breadfruit8692 | 11 hours ago
Trump has nothing to say about it anyway since the assets are held by the EU. He can ask politely if they would consider this, but given how he has treated Europe I doubt at this point they would pick up the phone if his number were on the caller ID.
I think Trump (or whoever is actually running the country) is just using this as a pretext to further degrade NATO and the EU prior to Putin's planned invasion of the Baltics this fall. Notice how he is ratcheting up the anti EU pressure? Having Musk shut down Starlink in the midst of a major russian missile offensive by Putin, Ukrainian and retaliatory attacks?
princek1 | 9 hours ago
My fear is that the US could exert pressure on the EU because of their reliance on US diesel after the Russian sanctions, which made US diesel 32% of EU import. Also, 55% of passenger vehicles run on diesel compared to just 3% in the US.
The point is the diesel crisis is affecting europe at a more structural level. That puts Trump in a position to make demands, and he could basically threaten to withhold diesel if they refuse to play along with unfreezing Russian assets.
Obviously this is speculation, but there's blood in the water and Trump fancies himself a shark.
Mysterious-Prompt212 | 6 hours ago

It would and it already said 'lol, no way' . At this point trying to grift and steal at every perceived opportunity is just a force of habit I guess.
I wonder if they try to pressure Ukraine instead. Recent Starlink restriction was definitely an attempt to remind Zelensky, that US still has some cards.
Caveman-Dave722 | 12 hours ago
Europe talking about passing those assets to Ukraine again or at least interest payments on them.
US and EU are in totally different places on Ukraine
Wyciorek | 12 hours ago
I think the interest payments has been going to Ukraine for a while already. The real point of contention is the funds themselves: they are frozen, but untouched. Some countries want to go 'screw it, why EU taxpayers are on the hook when Russian is the one destroying Ukraine?' while others (like Belgium) worry that actually seizing those funds will cause a lot of problems later.
princek1 | 12 hours ago
Well for every day that Ukraine holds, Poland and the EU have another day to prepare for the inevitable. Ukraine has become the stalwart of the west and buys time for the EU to ramp up production, which they seem to be doing, based on their borrowing.
Every dollar that the EU sends to Ukraine is worth 10 in defense, so it's a no brainer.

This is all in the last three months.
What more do you need?
doyouthinkwecanfly | 8 hours ago

New_Breadfruit8692 | 11 hours ago

KaQuu | 13 hours ago
Flederm4us | 8 hours ago
Whether Russia is in a place to make such demands depends on the battlefield realities. And since it doesn't look like russia will lose this any time soon while it does look like Ukraine is gonna have a hard time maintaining the war effort over next winter, they're absolutely in a place to make demands.
The question for now remains whether Ukraine wants peace now and less destruction to rebuild, or whether they want to dig the hole they're in even deeper.
C_Pala | 11 hours ago
They have like thousands of sanctions. I don't think they work that well. Also they have a vertical industry. They have missile air supremacy over UA since the lack of anti air defense ammo. and UA lost the Odessa ports, which was 60 % of the exports, not to mention the loss of logistics.

But if I saw two kids beating each other to death and was unwilling to directly intervene for fear of the bigger kid drawing his gun and shooting up the neighborhood… yeah, I would try letting the big kid have $20 and one of the smaller kid’s toys to diffuse the immediate situation.

Those are maximalist demands. Understandable to desire as the offended party, but completely unrealistic as an actual end.
Lemp_Triscuit11 | 9 hours ago
I reckon everyone in the world but you understands negotiations, almost invariably, asking for more than you think you'll get so that concessions are built into the process. An ally pressuring those concessions as opposed to the enemy is completely undercutting said negotiations

It’s a desperate ploy to bring down diesel prices.
But to be fair, there are plenty of other sanctions still in place.
And showing a willingness to lift sanctions without a perfect outcome that gives Ukraine everything they seek could pull Russia to negotiations
Careless-Pragmatic | 9 hours ago
Russia doesn’t want peace🤦 they want Ukraines land and resources
Kronzypantz | 9 hours ago
Generally, yes. The point is to make peace more profitable than war. Promising forever sanctions and nothing for all the previously invested lives and treasure doesn’t accomplish that.
Ideally, the cost of continued war would be enough cause for peace, but
A. Sunk cost fallacy and political fallout
and
B. Ukraine is losing the war of attrition
TailorSubstantial863 | 9 hours ago

We live in a war where the US could have left Afghanistan but refused to for 20 years and multiple administrations.
It isn’t realistic to think another imperialist nuclear armed state would give up a far bloodier war without taking a pound of flesh.
Putrefied_Goblin | 7 hours ago
TailorSubstantial863 | 5 hours ago
...and do you know what?
Kronzypantz | an hour ago
Putrefied_Goblin | 7 hours ago
Flat-Jacket-9606 | 5 hours ago
Negations, Putin has said on record they want the region, and will not stop until they get the region. All “peace” talks have been a non negotiable of Ukraine giving up its territory, with no real concessions for Ukraine.
Kronzypantz | 59 minutes ago
Peace, lifting the blockade on its ports, conceding a permanent security arrangement short of NATO, and letting Ukraine start bouncing back from its own personal Great Depression are concessions. Or at least, better concessions than the US gave to the Taliban or Iraq after finally having to walk away.
Its not realistic to expect Russia to give Ukraine cakes and ice cream and apologies.

Why would Trump reward & strengthen an active enemy of the United States?
dogemikka | 13 hours ago
The problem is that most of these assets that are freezed are in Europe, I can't see Europe agreeing at the moment. Also some capital was already unfreezed to help pay the reconstruction of Ukrainian sites destroyed by Russian bombing.

I’m sorry, but it is painfully clear now, that Trump is compromised, extremely corrupt or probably both.
And that the system is too weak to protect itself against his actions.
He is acting against his own interests and alienating every former ally the US have.
As a European I no longer see the US as an ally, not as a partner, but as a threat to my own security.
European economy must deliberately decopule itself from dependencies on critical wares and services.
Weapons, satellite data, rare earth minerals, tech and energy must be the first priorities for the EU.
Trump will last a few years more, but we can never again rely on such a fickle partner.

The only way this could make sense is if the assets were given to Ukraine as an alternative to not negotiating. Either come to the table or Ukraine gets it all.
