The U.S. ban on $1 billion worth of Canadian imports marks a severe escalation in North American trade, shifting from standard tariffs toward an outright supply-chain freeze. By taking effect at 12:01 a.m. today, September 29, 2026, the restriction completely halts the entry of targeted goods, including Canadian-made alcoholic beverages, dairy byproducts, and heavy gas-powered motorcycles over 800cc. While the financial figure is a minor slice of the overall $880 billion bilateral trade relationship, this restriction is a direct retaliation against Prime Minister Mark Carney's recent counter-tariffs. It puts intense structural pressure on specific Canadian manufacturers and distillers right ahead of the upcoming USMCA trade pact review.
This trade war no one wanted that turned one of our closest allies into an enemy who is doing everything they can to decouple from us.
And voters will forget it ever happened and still vote as if this is a reasonable choice. It sometimes makes me question will the stove just never be hot enough.
Based on the propaganda my mother is posting online, enemy. They are trying to push division and separatism across Canada. Only a rapist acts like the current USA.
They're like the downstairs neighbour who is occasionally fun to hang out, but they have a meth lab in their bathroom and they randomly shoots guns out the window, so these days they're more trouble than they're worth.
Not a brother. Your best friend. The one you trust so much because he knows and accept you are smaller and don’t care. That guys it took a long time to became friend with, because at the start it was… mehw… Both understand they were different and accept that until he snapped.
... and voters will still vote for men who are known rapists. It's crazy we've moved on from talking about how many women (and minors) the most powerful men in our government have raped.
But, point is that people willingly and knowingly vote for these people. If raping young girls isn't enough to change one's mind or see themselves out of identity politics, nothing is.
As long as people want ethnic cleansing and concentration camps over fiscal solvency, no, the stoves in the US will never be hot enough.
Hoping they all turn to ash in the process. At least if they start taking themselves out they'll be fewer ways they can be around to put it in office again.
I wouldn't say no one. It's just that the ones who want it have been very public in their goal of destroying the current world order in general and the US in particular
How far from normal are these sales? We run a regular trade surplus with the US and I would imagine we accumulate US treasuries regularly, and sell them when we feel like it.
I can't imagine 30B is that much in the grand scheme of things.
Everyone knows Trump has printed lots of money, US inflation is running unchecked and even Trump’s picks for the central bank can’t stop interest rates from going up. Trump has billions in financing coming up for renewal in 18 months. It’s a recipe for disaster - he’ll go begging to Putin again. I hope Ukraine is done with Russia by then.
• Rotation to Corporate Credit: Instead of abandoning U.S. assets entirely, Canadian institutional investors have been aggressively dumping U.S. government debt to lock in higher-yielding U.S. corporate bonds.
• Historical Volatility: Canada’s stockpile is notoriously volatile. The July drop directly followed a massive buying spree in May and June when Canadian entities added over $60 billion to their holding
"Canadian investors reduced their exposure to foreign securities by $30.6 billion in July, led by sales of
US
shares.
Meanwhile, foreign investors added $20.7 billion of Canadian securities to their holdings, led by a significant investment in federal government bonds.
As a result, international transactions in securities generated a net inflow of funds of $51.3 billion into the Canadian economy in July.
Canadian purchases of corporate bonds totaled just $1.8b."
For the remaining 96% of the economy, it grew at an annualized rate of 0.1%.
The US government has attached the entire future of their country on AI growing so much that they don't have to pay their debt anymore.
You can see why bond holders are calling the bluff by selling US treasuries, demanding America return to proper fiscal management.
The FED heeded those calls with a rate hike against the administration's wishes and to the detriment of all those AI build outs on hundreds of billions of dollars of debt.
You could argue the US would bail out the AI industry, but they are already failing at an attempt to bail themselves out of the debt death spiral.
The hilarious piece of copium that my conservative connections on LinkedIn are posting about is, to the surprise of no one, that they are blaming this on Biden, because he cancelled the keystone pipeline.
Ahhhh dude, you do realise that your guy just put massive tariffs on Canada. If keystone had been built, that tap would be shut.
Seriously, the US under Trump has driven a massive global surge in Canadian goods.
Sure it’s disruptive switching from the USA. But they’re just as likely to spend this month’s rent on their drug addiction to war on foreign soil and against anyone non white or Christian.
America is in the middle of a complete nervous breakdown and the world is there to support us in this breakup.
Yeah right we've moved on. There are entire export sectors being absolutely smoked right now. Forestry is one of them. I would visit manufacturers around the province as an industrial bearings sales rep last year who's book of business dropped 60%. You're living in a different Canada, and you should be forced into the army.
The new propaganda making the rounds is the US didn't start the trade war, Carney did, and any tariffs declared by Trump weren't in effect because CUSMA.

Meanwhile Canada sold $33b of US treasuries in July alone. They weren't alone as top bond holders sold over $120b that month.
America is losing more money on this self inflicted trade war than anything gained.

I wouldn’t say enemy. It’s something a bit different, you fall into distrust which might be worse.
The voter won’t forget something they do not a lot about. They will just say »Canada is the worst country in the world and he is doing what he can. »
You guys are broken for the next 25 years minimum. We all know how went your reconstruction after Grant finished is mandates.

It's near 8% of Canada's total holdings sold in a single month.
When America doesn't buy or import, they don't give people US dollars.
When I have no US dollars, I have no reason to buy US treasuries.
When treasury yields are rising, I have no reason to buy long dated bonds, as I can get a better yield by buying short dated.
Now America is trying to solve this problem, by issuing short term debt to buy long term debt.
At the same time, Wall Street firms are shorting the Yen, forcing Japan to sell US treasuries, to buy Yen for currency intervention.
It's a massive storm brewing without intervention that will hit everyone globally.
