My conspiracy brain is rattled at this. It sort of makes me think that they are seeing subscriptions as a means to permanent revenue and they will eventually choke the supply so much that all we as consumers will be offered will be slow alternatives that will require internet connection to a central compute. No more offline compute/power. This way they can not only sell you on access to the internet, but also sell you on centralized compute and the only thing in your home/apartment will be a terminal that can’t do much on its own other than connect to the central network. For a fee.
Why bother lubricating your car's engine? Send all that oil to me so I can finally lube my head enough to insert it into my own urethra (something tells me Altman has a gaping asshole as it is).
I used to save tech articles into a bookmark folder named Tech for later reading/referral. Now I just save them to the same folder I renamed during the pandemic to WTF. That folder used to be called News.
I appreciate this article saying that from a certain, extraordinarily myopic & blinkered point of view, it's logical. In a vacuum, of course having all of a limited resource allocatable on an as-needed basis is more efficient than that resource being spread everywhere disparately.
I feel like I've seen a lot of people portray what he said as more of a cartoonishly evil "no one deserves this resource besides me because I'm a bad person". Idk I feel like it's important to recognize that he has a justification for it that makes sense to him and doesn't feel wrong to him (and probably to a number of others).
Of course, maybe the efficiency argument is actually a flimsier cover than I think it is and he's fully aware of his own bullshit
It isn’t logical, adding network latency to CPU - Memory communication would absolutely cripple performance. It would also make it impossible to use a computer at all without an internet connection - immediate bluescreen and failure to boot up.
You see, they didn't put quotation marks around the quote. So you should be able to discern it isn't a direct quote and isn't being represented as such. What they are doing is paraphrasing, and it is for dramatic effect.

That’s 100% where technology is going if we don’t do something to stop it.

Yeah no. First they collect all the knowledge now they want all the computing power so they can charge whatever they want? Gtfo.

I guess that's the issue with most ideas about centralizing resources right, the supply chain
