Protectionism doesn't get enough hate for making shit worse for people. From NIMBY housing policy at the local level to trade wars and government propping up politically connected industries at every level, it's all really terrible policy that makes shit less flexible, waste resources, and literally gimmicks the economy in favor of dumb shit that then gets insulated from paying for failure
In my opinion, they also grew up in a culture that highlighter how many people got rich by exploiting systems instead of hard work and productivity, and they realize the whole thing is a scam. Imagine your entire world and political view being COVID, Trump, crypto, gambling, streamers, influencers, etc and not really having any role models who work hard or are actual useful and respectful people
I honestly cannot imagine that people don’t know a single person who works hard or is actually useful and respectful to other people. I meet them every day. I realize I’m not everyone, and I’m not a child, but I don’t live in a bubble either.
After a certain point in life, good role models and mentors are a personal choice. They may not be the most popular choice or the easiest choice, but they are a choice.
Even if someone is literally a hermit living on top of a mountain and have no one else to interact with they can always read a book. There are so many books that exemplify those qualities.
It could probably be argued that they are a better guide than some parents and definitely politicians and CEOs. /s
The issue isn't people not working hard - it's seeing these influential heroes that don't work harder making exponentially more money and success than people who are working hard.
It's not about, 'do you know someone who works hard.' It's about, who would you rather be, this person who works hard and makes a solid living, or this person who cheats and can do whatever they want for the rest of their life?
Submission statement: this article argues against the classic complaints and criticisms that Gen-Z often faces, arguing that many of it's distinctive behaviors mirror that of the generation of the Great Recession, and this behavior was caused by a society that forced it.
Saying that Gen Z is _____, is the same is saying Black People are ______, or everyone from Iran is _______. It's all stereotyping and logically its incorrect and morally it's wrong. People are people, we react to the world around us, and in large groups we're pretty predictable.
I went to a budgeting class today and in my head I was like yeah it looks like I’m gonna have to just move back in with my parents and stop paying rent bc it just doesn’t fit in my budget. A lot of people I worked with at my last job were grown and still living at home and had to commute huge distances for a retail job. Why would you care if you can’t even afford to rent somewhere out?
I'm GenX, and the only thing that I have really learned is that you have to take care of yourself. Its different for everyone.
Personally, I want to build family wealth, I'm about a million short of a million, but I want to do better than my parents. Man were they good at spending money.
Anyways, this is to say that the reason I am doing this is because of my daughter and a world that no matter what she does, it will always be too expensive until she is in her 40's. Unless she gets a really good job, otherwise in our area there just isn't a pathway to reasonable priced home ownership.
Do what works for YOU, screw everyone else that has an opinion that isn't helping you pay bills or move forward in a positive way.
Two things can be true at once. I won’t argue with the unique circumstance that Gen Z is facing, but there’s also a very unique combination of traits they seem to share that aren’t productive.
In an environment where there is very little connection between their productivity and how much they're able to reap from it, doesn't it make sense that they might eschew traditional 'productivity' more often in favor of enjoying their time and lives in the ways they can?
