Agree. I’ve been thinking co-operatives would be a good funding solution for open source projects. If nothing else, you’re directly getting something in return for a regular donation: membership to a community and voting power over its direction.
This seems to be working well for Codeberg as a community-owned e.V. which seems to get enough funding for infrastructure and development. We recently voted against AI and cryptocurrency projects, a decision that aligns with the values of the members and not some corporate sponsor.
