The story is much more entertaining than it sounds. He actually made multiple multi-year stays. Reflecting that, his story is in 3 parts:

  1. An Island to Oneself: http://web.archive.org/web/20080209183235/http://www.janesoceania.com/suvarov_tom_neale/index.htm

  2. Alone At Last: http://web.archive.org/web/20080213095050/http://www.janesoceania.com/suvarov_tom_neale/index1.htm

  3. Six Frustrating Years: https://web.archive.org/web/20080514174204/http://www.janesoceania.com/suvarov_tom_neale/index2.htm

The short book was published in 1966. Tom Neale has a Wikipedia entry: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tom_Neale

Thanks for the added context, didn't know he wrote two more volumes.

You're welcome! I later learned that Neale's wife was part of the Marsters family that owns and lives on Palmerston Island, population 35: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palmerston_Island#History

At least in 2019, apparently Neale's son Arthur Neale still lived on Palmerston: https://www.outsideonline.com/adventure-travel/essays/palmerston-atoll-island-climate-change/
