I'd like to make some progress on blog articles (I have a huge backlog), after a long hiatus of not writing or doing much recreational programming at all (LLMs make it feel kind of pointless).
A walk around the block isn't going anywhere. Anything that brings us satisfaction can't be pointless.
To wit, I feel like LLMs have increased my appetite for both writing, and reading human written content. Nothing like Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction, perhaps.
Tell me about it! I literally have over a hundred nearly done, often more than 10 years old, just awaiting enough editing/divine inspiration to overcome perfectionism.
Road-tripping back home after hanging out with my mom for a week. The goal was to get myself re-centered and on-kilter a bit after a bit of tumultuous personal life, which hasn't been unsuccessful, but I've also been reminded that I am just fundamentally kinda wobbly.
Still fiddling with translating marginalia's index to C++. Currently translating the main backing structure of the inverted index, which is arguably the point where Java chafes the most. I'm being quite slow in approaching this, as there's a lot of opportunity for improving the expressiveness in the translation. I wouldn't be surprised if the whole thing lands at half the line count when I'm done, and then C++ is usually the more verbose language. I'm at a point where I'm able to begin to do some integrity tests, which is nice, because now I get to look for bugs in a 1000 line haystack of incredibly technical code.
Nice part is that I can probably just port over the extensive test suite I built for the java implementation, it's very thorough in testing all the little corner cases in this code.
Also I'm a big fan of std::span. Since nearly everything this code touches is a contiguous span of memory, the more I use std::span, the cleaner everything gets.
I’ll be releasing my e-paper Clojure notebook, Clerkenwell (demo video). The code is okay for a v0.1, I just need to complete the documentation, set up some repo hooks and write an introductory blog post.
This is such a fun idea! I've been playing with Clojure for a few days and this has added to my excitement. Thanks for sharing, I am looking forward to seeing more :)
Continuing to do trust exercises with my dog. It's been 3 weeks and she is not acclimated whatsoever. I am very distressed and upset about it. I thought I had made some progress last week but I took her outside (carried her because she will not move of her own volition) and it traumatized her so much all of the progress is gone. Feels like starting from 0 again.
Besides that I'll be playing some Deadlock. Maybe I'll do some cleaning.
I will say as someone who has fostered a lot of dogs, it can take a month or so before progress appears. My personal approach is to slow play it like I don't care one way or the other and give some space, though obviously that doesn't extend to not going out to the bathroom!
Having more-or-less recovered from what turned out to be an unusually rough reaction to the covid + flu jabs earlier this week, I think I'm going to break out a Pi CM4 I have lying around and do some recreational bare-metal osdev to see if that can help me haul myself out of depression.
Attending two birthday parties of friends of my 3 year old son. Feeling both joyful and tiny bit bitter – this somehow wasn't a thing in my circles when I was a child. Or maybe it was and I just wasn't invited.
Going to a local(ish) Nix meetup on Saturday, though I haven't used Nix for much other than devshells and configuring my system lately... maybe I'll learn something new!
On Sunday I suppose I might get some work done on rawrxd. I'm learning a bunch of stuff about compression and making some decent progress lately, I'm enjoying it.
Also I'll be searching on ebay and local marketplace websites for a decent motherboard with enough SATA ports that'll fit the i3-9100 I just bought for 15 euros, since the motherboard I was looking to get has been nabbed before I could make an offer. I'll be using those to build a home server to replace my Pi.
Going to visit the kid on Saturday and then leaving the NE to head to the SW, hopefully until Spring. To heck with crowded, gray, and moist. I want desert air and elbow room!
If I get some computer time, I’d like to finalize my attempt to make the nuenv script from nu_scripts (1) unload the .env.nu environnement when leaving its directory and (2) easily reload it when the .env.nu contents change.
I'm really enjoying "Sum" by David Eagleman, and as a fan of micro/short fiction, I'm reading it slowly, and taking time to write and think between "afterlives".

That's okay. Despite everything, I'm still me.

std::spanalso fills the role of the non-existingstd::viewby just usingstd::span<const T>instead ofstd::span<T>. It's pretty versatile.nathell | 9 hours ago

Study math, try to finish my "Forth with records, built in persistence and liveview-like system" that has been bringing me so much joy lately. Basically instead of a stack you have a record and you have a record algebra.

I’m working on WordJoy, a solo deck-building game where you connect Chinese character components on a 3×3 board to form characters.
