After reading this, I'm even more impressed with him and what he took on. His thoughtfulness and intelligence shine through at every moment. While they nixed his career - he is only 38 now, just think about what he still could have achieved there - he is coming across as levelheaded and hunble, while still firmly holding on to his convictions. He can even extend some grace, while the NFL comes across as feeble in the defense of any of his - and others' - criticism.
He wasn't ever going to be a star in the NFL and anyone who pretends otherwise just don't know ball. If you are going to be a distraction on a team then you better have talents that can't be replaced.
I know Kaepernick wasn't exactly a franchise QB, but 2017 starting lineups featured such "elite" quarterbacks as Trevor Siemian, Tom Savage, and Brett Hundley. Kaepernick would have been an instant upgrade over any of these guys to the tune of 3 or 4 more wins over a full season.
I mean, Kaepernick wasn't an elite player by any means but that hasn't stopped any one from having a long NFL career and future opprtunties. There have been so many mediocre quarterbacks with careers spanning a decade or more that there's no reason Kaepernick couldn't have had the same opportunities that someone like Trent Dilfer got. The fact that he was basically black balled from the league has nothing to do with his playing and everything to do with his politics which half the country (myself included) find to be completely unobjectionable. If it wasn't for Trump and his movement of simple minded racist crybabies having a collective temper tantrum over a compeltely innoccuous and unobtrusive gesture, there wouldn't be any controversy.
He was literally a star in the NFL, which is why he attracted so much attention. He was also a phenomenal QB and team leader, which is why we're still talking about him. A lesson anyone who knows ball on the professional level will tell you is that anyone can be replaced. The lesson here, which you either don't understand or are being disingenuous about is that rich white dudes don't like outspoken African American men. Mix in toxic patriotism, advertising and sponsor dollars and hypocritical owners and you get a blossoming career cut short, with no other teams even giving him a tryout.
