does living alone itself raise the risk or are the kinds of people who live alone at higher risk?

Cernunnos369 | 5 hours ago

I imagine it’s people living alone who also don’t have any friends or family.

Kopie150 | 5 hours ago

Ye i would imagine the average age gets brought down by suicides. Loneliness kills.

Cernunnos369 | 4 hours ago

It sure does. We are social animals. Even being friendly with your neighbours with a hi 👋 every now and then helps.

spiritofniter | 4 hours ago

Wish I could turn people at work into actual friends :(

SelimDaGrim | 3 hours ago

Or have already had the loved one or ones they were passing the rest of their days with die.

VanillaBovine | 3 hours ago

i imagine simply living alone increases the % by a good bit

any accident that occurs, you may not be discovered for hours/days. A lot of folks that suffer something like a heart attack, stroke, or bad fall are saveable- but only within a certain time period

not having someone who can help in the exact moment is going to drastically increase the risk of death

Choking on food is another big one where having another person there can make all the difference. What would be just a scary moment can be fatal if theres no one to perform the Heimlich on ya and you dont know how to do it on yourself.

Just in case someone reading doesnt know, here are the steps to save yourself if youre choking

"If you are choking on something, you can perform the Heimlich maneuver on yourself. Follow these steps:

Make a fist with one hand. Place the thumb of that hand below your rib cage and above your navel.

Grasp your fist with your other hand. Press your fist forcibly into the upper abdominal area with a quick upward movement.

You can also lean over a table edge, chair, or railing. Quickly thrust your upper belly area (upper abdomen) against the edge, using gravity to assist you."

Gotta get rid of the confounders

I imagine it’s because people don’t have LifeAlert and when they’ve fallen and can’t get up, there’s nobody around to pick them up.

Gherin29 | 3 hours ago

Yet again ppl don’t understand causation bs correlation.

obsequious_fink | 49 minutes ago

Heart attacks, stroke, and accidents are three of the four top causes of death. Having someone with you when one of those things happens greatly increases your chances of survival, so my guess is that explains most of the difference...

Gallonim | 5 hours ago

That's kinda obvious after all who will call an ambulance when you get a medical emergency when there is no one at home.

Brb, showing my dog those stories about the dog(s) that called 911 or went and got help when their people were injured.

BRB, asking my cats to really make sure I'm dead before they start eating me.

I respect every cat's right to decide when to gobble at your face.

I wonder what the risks are of living with a curmudgeon or in a loveless/lonely partnership?

AlteredEinst | 4 hours ago

Not important, because that doesn't reinforce stereotypes.

opAdSilver3821 | 5 hours ago

Wtf.. i love living alone..

Exotic_Ad_4806 | 4 hours ago

But if you fall or hurt yourself who is gonna save you or call the ambulance?

SafiaLane | 4 hours ago

You can be at home alone in a multi-person household. People work, school, and go on trips.

SecondHandWatch | 2 hours ago

Not true. People who live with another person are never alone, not even in the bathroom.

SafiaLane | 2 hours ago

lol! You’re right. They’re never really gone.

>An analysis of approximately 3 million Koreans and Britons revealed that single-person households have a 27% higher risk of premature death compared to multi-person households. Low income, smoking, obesity, feelings of isolation, and depression were identified as major causes. The study also found that practicing a healthy lifestyle can offset this risk by about half.

Firm-Tangelo-8299 | an hour ago

Weird cause all those things are still valid even living “with” someone?…

Puzzleheaded-Bee4698 | 3 hours ago

"premature" = ?

2beatenup | 3 hours ago

You can’t put a price on peace buddy you just can’t. !!!

Daxmar29 | 4 hours ago

I think some of it has to do with getting out of the shower and your partner asks you about that weird mole on your back. That and nagging you to go to the drs. when you aren’t feeling well. Then they catch something life threatening early.

Exotic_Ad_4806 | 4 hours ago

does a dog count as living alone or with someone?

Noiserawker | 2 hours ago

I mean your dog might have trouble calling 911
