“Every time he disgraced himself the queen gave him another honour. He had just been appointed commodore-in-chief of the Fleet Air Arm when, just before the business of passing girls back and forth in Bangkok appeared in the papers, she made him a knight of the Garter, Britain’s oldest, most coveted order of chivalry.”
Rich people in general. They all supported each other in this. While telling the rest of us there wasn't enough money for healthcare, education, the arts....
A very very witty piece, but I think it’s the seething fury underneath that really makes it. If he was more flippant, handling all this abhominable behaviour, it wouldn’t be nearly as affecting. We should react with rage and disgust at such naked wickedness, and I think too many writers take refuge in this sort of cynical detachment. Which can work, but I enjoyed how much he seems to hate these people.
I’m not sure how she was like for Prince Edward, but the Queen was not a good mother at all for at least 3 of her children. She didn’t show affection towards the first two, and she spoiled the third child too much that he became a devil.

First thing I've read by him, and it's one of the most viciously cutting things I've read ever. I'm somewhat in awe.
