This looks like a fantastic update. While functional the 1.x app certainly felt like an old Android app. One thing the article doesn't include is a link to the new version. I tried the download link on the website, but that's still 1.23.2. The latest release on the repo is the same version https://gitlab.com/fdroid/fdroidclient/-/releases
