The amazing economic genius of Republicans rears its head again.

I'm so glad that one of the most attractive things about Trump was "He'll run the country like a business." Of course, he is, just like one of his businesses, namely, like his casinos.

planetofthemushrooms | 23 hours ago

It is absolutely amazing the propaganda Republicans have been running for decades that has managed to convince the country that the difference between them and Democrats is that they are the ones that are good for the economy. You hear conservatives spout this all the time even though any evidence points to the contrary. Just say something enough times and people take it as truth.

Bdowns_770 | 22 hours ago

It’s the same in the UK. The Torries slash and burn and leave Labor to clean it up. Trouble is it’s getting harder and harder to get things back on the rails. Trump has added so much debt the next guy is going to have to make some tough choices and there will be unpleasant policies as a result.

planetofthemushrooms | 21 hours ago

Yep and when the tough decisions get made and things get hard for a little while they get to say "see how bad things are since that guy got in charge! vote for us and we'll make it easier on you by cutting your taxes and fund the country entirely on debt!"

Says the man who somehow bankrupted casinos. Closest thing to a money printer anyone has had but found a way to f it up.

Apprehensive-Art1092 | 22 hours ago

This is the most successful narrative that's ever been spun. My brother in christ he didn't bankrupt those casinos through incompetence. He absolutely is incompetent - but that was done deliberately to launder money. He's a fucking crook. That's a far worse charge than just being a fucking idiot.

urlock | 15 hours ago

I read that he also paid himself too much money and the casino couldn’t pay the bills anymore.

_Thorshammer_ | 13 hours ago

This is the answer right here, and I wish more people would understand that.

Trump has bankrupted business that had billions of dollars invested in them, massive cash flow, and (known after the fact) he wasn't paying payroll, contractors, and suppliers after ordering the cheapest shit he could find that he thought looked fancy.

Big money coming in, little money going out... where did the fucking money go?

Occam's razor says if you give someone in a large and wealthy country a huge sum of money to run a business that is wildly profitable AROUND THE WORLD IN A VARIETY OF ECONOMIC SYSTEMS AND CONDITIONS and that business fails, the money was stolen.

It is that fucking simple.

edincide | 12 hours ago

“never attribute to incompetence what can be attributed to malice” especially when it comes to people in power

E-mil37 | 5 hours ago

For a man who owns and is associated with over 500 busineses with only 6 going bankrupt. I mean... that seems to be a man who really has a good track record of running one.

Just cause a person owns 10 sneakers and one of them stepped on dog poop doesn't mean all the sneakers the person owns stepped on poop to.

Stop micro judging and look at things from a macro perpsective .

homer_lives | 23 hours ago

He did print money into his bank account and left the casino with all.the debt from the building and running it.

MrSquicky | 22 hours ago

He didn't. Trump was a failed businessman in massive debt whom no bank would lend to until The Apprentice.

Trump is not good at business. He has a long track record of making very bad decisions that bit him in the ass and his advice are stupid things from the 80s (which was such a stupid decade for business) like never hire people smarter than you and have your underlings fight against each other. He treats all business like a zero sum game and has only two moves, use his superior position to bully the weaker one and if that doesn't work, hurt both sides so that the other one will capitulate.

Trump is a con man, a reality tv "businessman", and a malignant narcissist. He tricks people to get his money and it's pretty amazing that he is still getting away with it.

Kalorama_Master | 21 hours ago

Why do you ignore all the rape?

InsertCleverNickHere | 21 hours ago

Look, if we're going to discuss all of the shit Trump has done we'll be here all day. Personally, I think not explicitly charging him with insurrection after Jan. 6 has been the most damaging thing he's gotten away with, but take your pick.

RjoTTU-bio | 19 hours ago

If McConnell was actually on board, we would have a Trump that could never hold public office again. He would definitely have ended up in prison for RICO in Georgia, classified documents case in Florida, or the J6 insurrection. I can picture a world where republicans wanted to move on from him and start fresh.

Unfortunately, he was still seen as a major political tool for the Republican party and faced no consequences. They wanted him to continue to help them win the MAGA crowd, so they protected him. I wonder if they regret it now that they can’t keep him from doing dumb shit every day. I hope the republicans get crushed in future elections so we can eventually hold these assholes accountable.

LastNightOsiris | 16 hours ago

I think the failure to convict trump on felony charges after Jan 6 is the biggest error of the Biden administration. Even more than Biden waiting too long to step aside. He had the opportunity to put trump in prison but squandered it in the name of “healing the nation”
or whatever.

I think I remember a NY times expose about this. They looked at about 60 of Trumps "businesses". I think 20 failed outright, 20 had clear operational issues i.e. fraud investigations, and 20 were actually clear successes (meaning they actually made some money)... So basically, 33% of the time, he's succeeds all the time. Or rather, there's a 1/3 chance America makes it out alive.

oursland | 17 hours ago

I don't want my government run like a business. Businesses exist to maximize profits and due to so by raising the prices to what the market will bear while cutting costs. In government that would be raising taxes and tariffs while cutting services.

kent_eh | 16 hours ago

Any candidate in any election for any office who claims to want to "run government like a business" is an automatic "vote agasint" for me.

The FED cannot control the long end. That is depending on trust in long term economic and political stability of a country. What a "pleasure" to see rates go up and 30 years treasuries prices crater in portfolio 😄

Cool-Truth211 | 19 hours ago

They can control the long end. (And will) via YCC and open market operations

We will be there in like 5 years

Sagronym | 18 hours ago

of course it was supposed to be read as "cannot control the long end via lowering interest rates on the short end" which is what Vance and Trump just were demanding and what we are talking about here ( context!), I was not talking about buying LTB by the FED.

The rates the FED sets or actively changes in their sessions (FFR overnight , Discount rate -short term loans) for the market are affecting the short end up to 2 years maybe.

Of course, the Gov can repeat their desperate action to take more short term debt to buy 30 year treasuries but that has a nasty side effect to increase the already (very!) high short term maturity wall. (there must be a chart somewhere ´..)

For this reason - debt not just mounting in general but piling up for near term repayment - economists and debt experts already warn about shocks and "days of reckoning".

https://www.reddit.com/r/Economics/comments/1vyxsr4/moody_economist_zandi_on_the_days_of_reckoning/

All that is not new and had happened to smaller countries often enough in the last 100 years, sometimes leading to a complete bankrupt like in Argentina (2x - once it had been one of the richest countries in the world like Switzerland today!) ).

Or it required extremely expensive rescue actions like in Greece 2010 with its extreme debt levels, where Europe govs had to fight against spillover on French banks - one (BNP or Soc Gen) was engaged with €50B credits in the Greece market and the French state at those times was NOT able to cushion that off, they did not have the money then, faced damaging own credit rating - even if that 50B seems not a dangerous sum from todays perspective.

So Sarkozy hammered reluctant aunty Merkel to step in with guaranteeing Greek debt with German money (and other countries) to save a big french bank (and his neck) and the Euro, so they framed it although a bankrupt Greece would not have ended Euro ... its those spillover effects from "near bankruptcies " of a state to real economy that often cause the real problems ...dramatic negotiations over months.

USA is too big to be saved by others so they probably will try to inflate out of their problem - which the liars call "grow out of ", Of course with a 4% inflation a nominal 4% growth is not a problem ..but they woul need probably even more with their current deficit levels ..

redwings27 | 18 hours ago

I’m not really sure they can properly control the long end if foreign governments and large institutional investors truly start to lose faith and start dumping Treasuries. Open market operations on top of that could further erode confidence in the federal government as a lender.

calgarywalker | 15 hours ago

Foreign countries are removing gold from the US already - because the US confiscated all physical gold last time there was a depression in the US …. A depression caused by, you guessed it - US tariffs.

It's not that easy. US commercial banks are required by law to hold that debt, they can't just decide not to buy or hold it. And of course the Fed always stands behind the market to buy up debt.

128-NotePolyVA | 21 hours ago

The help they are looking for is inflation. They want to weaken the dollar to deal with the $40T debt.

A weak dollar is hard on the poor and working class.

If Trump & Co. wanted a worker‑friendly strategy for the $40T national debt they would stop using inflation and tariffs as stealth tools to make the working class pay for DC’s spending. Move the tax burden toward corporations and very high earners. Cut spending where it hits waste and corporate welfare - not workers. Defend the dollar and price stability so paychecks and IRAs keep their real value.

1098duc_w_the_termi | 18 hours ago

I don’t think they actually care about the debt otherwise they’d make an effort of spending less. They want to put us on a path to hyperinflation and dollar debasement because they own all the assets. It’ll make them wealthier and more powerful as the gap between the poor and rich widens. Yall need to stop looking at their actions through a normal lens and realize they’re purposefully trying to ruin this country for their own benefit.

128-NotePolyVA | 18 hours ago

I think they are the same strategy. The debt has to be serviced and managed whether they care about reducing it or not. And their plan is to do so by devaluing what they pay labor. Yes, they are shielded from the pain because they hold all the assets.

1098duc_w_the_termi | 17 hours ago

I really don’t think they care about our country is my point. They could let it fail and move on. The wealthy are beyond borders if you haven’t noticed.

Penki- | 17 hours ago

Your proposed solutions won't work. The reality is that there aren't that many rich people in the US to tax away the debt without taxing the middle class too. The debt is just too big.

128-NotePolyVA | 17 hours ago

A worker‑friendly strategy doesn’t pretend the rich can pay off the entire $40T debt. Nor does it suggest the middle class doesn’t have to pay taxes. But it also doesn’t accept that workers must bear the burden through inflation, tariffs, or middle‑class tax hikes.

Washington needs to stop using stealth taxes like inflation and tariffs on workers. Shift new revenue toward corporations and very high earners. Cut waste, not worker programs.
Defend price stability so wages and savings keep their value. Let long‑term growth shrink the debt burden instead of shrinking workers’ paychecks.

RequirementThese1347 | 16 hours ago

JD Vance’s public statement that the administration believes it is "proper and responsible" for the central bank to lower interest rates highlights an escalating structural friction over modern U.S. monetary policy. This public advocacy for immediate rate cuts to ease consumer mortgage pressures directly conflicts with the recent forward guidance from Fed Chair Kevin Warsh, who has signaled potential rate hikes to counter persistent inflation metrics. From a macroeconomic standpoint, this divergence introduces significant volatility into bond markets and challenges traditional models of central bank independence.

Young_Lochinvar | 22 hours ago

This is exactly the reason the power to set interest rates was distanced from executive governments in much of the world.

The temptation for less scrupulous politicians to put their short term popularity above sound financial settings is just too great a risk for the economy. Always better to keep temptation at arms length.

potatosquire | 15 hours ago

Which is why even the perception that the government is trying to meddle in interest rates is enough to push up inflation expectations, which directly results in increased inflation. Trump and Vance are personally increasing inflation even if their attempts to pressure the fed have no actual impact on rates, which ironically might make it more likely for rates to go up.

Trump is certainly too stupid and too ignorant of basic economics to understand the connection, though in Vance's case he probably knows what he's saying is bad for his country but would prefer to score brownie points with Trump than look after the interests of the American public.

dotcubed | 21 hours ago

Kinda want to see what happens if they lower rates but also was hoping for the ability to buy things again.

Knowing fully that an airport is a bad example, $10-12 for a Hot Wheels car is insane, but so is $6/diesel and gas. And that’s where we’re headed while his co-worker is renaming bodies of water.

Young_Lochinvar | 20 hours ago

If you want to see what happens when you let politics choose the interest rates then Türkiye (31.5% inflation) and Argentina (33.8% inflation) are case studies for you.

Kiwi_Apart | 20 hours ago

The Fed only sets the overnight loan rate. All longer term rates are set by bond buyers. Vance knows that, he's trying to deflect blame from this administration's inflationary spending.

20% of the national debt was accumulated as a result of two Trump terms with four years of a Republican house and Senate

They do care about homes for the exact reason you're talking about. They want low interest rates to buy all the homes and land up. They care about assets like homes just like they do with stocks and crypto. They get free money (low rates) that the rest of us don't.

MoonBatsRule | 17 hours ago

A credible president would look at the housing problem - which is evident almost universally across the nation, with prices up 50-100% since 2020, and would come up with an action plan that would involve:

  • Recommendations for zoning which would allow more housing to be created in places where it is desired.
  • Federal funding to incentivize research and development in the housing sector to bring the cost of construction down via new technology or methods.
  • Federal training money made available to states to get more people up to speed in the construction sector.
  • Opening the doors to immigrant labor skilled in building homes, to get some new people in fast.
  • Some kind of seed money which would allow for the nationwide development of credible businesses devoted to moderately-priced new home building.
  • Potentially looking at the economic phenomenon that is driving economic demand into just a few areas in the nation - figure out ways to spread the economy around a bit more.

Clown…this administration created a fiscal mess by passing massive tax cuts for the wealthy which reduces revenue, created a disastrous war which is costing billions each month, depleted our strategic petroleum reserves to dangerous levels, has spent taxpayer money like a drunken sailor on a disastrous ballroom, a disastrous reflecting pool fiasco, and a tribute arch to a narcissist, while grocery prices continue to rise, while gas prices continue to rise, while Americans are giving up healthcare because they can’t afford the premiums and as debt had surpassed 40 Trillion dollars….lowering interest rates at this point would cause inflation to rise and the stock market to rise beyond reasonable levels setting up a serious crises….and they are blaming Medicare and Social Security for the problem while it is actually the GOP fiscal irresponsibility that has us in this situation….everyone needs to wake up and realize these guys don’t care one bit for the average American, it is the party of grifters, enriching themselves at the expense of the American taxpayer, while using our money…

Least_Art5238 | 23 hours ago

The Fed has a couple of specific jobs:

  • Keep inflation under control. The official target is 2%, but both tails matter: too high erodes purchasing power, too low (or negative) risks deflationary spirals that are just as damaging.

  • Support maximum employment. This isn't a fixed number though 4% unemployment is considered an informal threshold beyond which the Fed may act.

As a third, less-discussed job, the Fed acts as lender of last resort. The extreme version of this role showed up during the 2008-2010 financial crisis, when the Fed had to backstop the banking system directly.

If major holders of US treasuries start to suspect either of the following, they'll demand higher rates on new US debt:

  • The US defaults on its debt. Unprecedented, but no longer unthinkable.
  • The Fed bends to pressure from the executive branch rather than acting on data, a real concern given Kevin Warsh, whom Trump has called an ally, just started in May.

The Fed only directly sets the short-term fed funds rate. It doesn't control the 30-year Treasury yield or mortgage rates, which track longer-term expectations. So if a rate cut looks driven by political pressure rather than economic data, markets may read that as tolerating higher inflation down the road, and long-term yields (and mortgage rates with them) could actually rise even as the short-term rate falls.

Given that, the push from Trump, Vance, and Bessent for a friendlier Fed carries a real long-term risk: a politically-driven cut could backfire, pushing long-term borrowing costs up rather than down, further shrinking the buyer pool for US debt and making mortgages even harder to afford.

MephistoHamProducts | 19 hours ago

> a real concern given Kevin Warsh, whom Trump has called an ally, just started in May.

It's not really a concern though. Warsh is just one guy and one vote on the board. He doesn't do anything unilaterally except make stupid statements to placate Trump.

J-Pow is still on the board, as is Lisa Cook, both people Trump tried to force out but who didn't bend to him and are unlikely to vote to lower rates just to please him. I can't think of anyone else on the board, other than Warsh, willing to tank the economy just to score points as a Trump lackey.

Wrong-Dot-1319 | 21 hours ago

I was thinking the same thing. Would be nice to have some help from the White House for high gas prices, price increases on everything, healthcare costs that are astronomical, billions going everywhere but back into the communities that sent the money to Washington.

Plus that foreign governments are pulling assets from the US (gold)

Gogs85 | 20 hours ago

If they lower interest rates before inflation is tamed it’s not going to lower long term rates like for mortgages. Inflation reduces the profitability of loans so banks will want higher rates to compensate for that. In fact the long end might be higher for longer if we lower rates. . .

Level_Bobcat_8729 | 19 hours ago

So what he's doing is putting the blame on the fed that things are so difficult right now, and trying to get public opinion that the fed needs to lower rates so that life is easier.

Inevitable-Owl9649 | 2 hours ago

The real issue is that with employers still hiring and the Iran War still going, there’s no way to cut interest rates without risking a major inflation spike. Add to that the fact that major economic powers are already dumping Treasuries, and any rate cut just makes them more nervous about runaway inflation. Want rates to go down? Stop the Iran War, get rid of tariffs and stop propping up many failed American companies that can no longer compete on the world stage… looking at you Ford and Chevy.

Why does trump need help? He told everyone he, and he alone can fix everything

Donald Trump accepts GOP nomination, says 'I alone can fix' system

I am very depressed by this.

Vance is an ivy league graduate. He should be smarter than this. We all know that deep down inside he knows that if the labor and stock market are strong that lowering rates will create a ton of inflation. And inflation is one of their biggest challenges right now. This statement is saying "we have a pretty good campfire going here, but it sure would be great if someone would toss a gallon of gas onto it."

But, it is what we've grown to expect. I'm so tired of all of this shit, I want adults back.

Distwalker | 17 hours ago

He's a graduate of Yale. He has had, at minimum, Macroecomomics 101. He knows that the Fed lowering interest rates now would absolutely, positively be inflationary.

He doesn't care, however. He is a gormless, knee walking, gimp kowtowing to his orange master. Truth means nothing. Power is all that matters.

OrneryZombie1983 | 15 hours ago

You can't simultaneously be saying that this is the "greatest economy in history" and "numbers nobody has ever seen before" while calling for rate cuts. It doesn't work that way. Why would we need rate cuts? To speed up the economy? Why? It's already supposedly doing great.

Rare-Dealer5387 | 14 hours ago

So the pick yourself up by the bootstraps crowd is looking for someone to give them a handout now? Hilarious how their entire political philosophy is just a fool of convenience

Even if the fed lowers rates…that won’t fix the bonds the government sells and demand for US debt…

Hawk13424 | 12 hours ago

If you want lower interest rates, you need to reduce inflation, mostly by not imposing tariffs and starting wars. Do that and the fed will be happy to lower interest rates without the threats.

salami_cheeks | 10 hours ago

In his recent book Communion, Vamce laments how the vacuum left by the decline in Christianity has been replaced by the religion of economics. An entire chapter. Maybe he should pray for lower rates.

DramaticSimple4315 | 23 hours ago

There is absolutely nothing justifying in the current macroeconomic outlook any move towards a rate decrease.
Just by looking at the basics, inflation is too high and not controled, employement is OK.
The problems that the bottom 70% are facing nonetheless entierely stem out from the PUBLIC POLICIES pursued by hapeless neoliberal democrats in the 90s and 00s and savage capitalist republicans for the last 45 yrs every single time they have has the tiniest sniff at power

Jonesbro | 21 hours ago

So Vance, is the economy great or needing help? The contradiction is insane. At least with Trump he (incorrectly) looks at rates the reverse way like it's a company's bond rate. Vance is just lying.

Dphre | 20 hours ago

According to basset hounds cited study if I found the correct MIT one, a summary article stated that government spending is the biggest cause of inflation. Seeing as we are spendng a lot of money and looking to spend a fuck ton more maybe like the bible reportedly says, help yourself first and stop blaming sleepy do nothing Joe.

miagi_do | 19 hours ago

Uh, you could, but then you’d have more inflation and people would complain about that. Yes recessions hurt those that are laid off, but persistent inflation kills every household by a thousand cuts.

HeatWaveToTheCrowd | 18 hours ago

It’s amazing how the messaging just falls down from the top and everyone simply falls in line and repeats the same old tired, talking points. The numbers don’t call for a rate cut at all, but actually calls for a raise. He’s embarrassing.

Wrong_Assignment_446 | 17 hours ago

If this is true, JDV is out in 2028. Do they think everyone is stupid? I honestly believe this guy knows the right moves but is copping the party line to please Dear Leader. This is not the leader of the future of our nation.

Psychological_Ad1999 | 13 hours ago

The quote illustrates that Vance has no idea how the economy works. The fastest and most durable way to lower inflation would be to get rid of the tariffs, stop the immigration raids, and end the Iran War. Lowering the interest rate would have a negligible effect with the other factors.

Their goal is to rob the nation. High inflation does that. This is why these people keep pushing for lower interest rates.

They're pushing for personal gain. Not to help economy, not to help the people.

To rob the people and enrich themselves.

AbjectList8 | 10 hours ago

I often wonder if Trump puts out a “honey do” list for his dipshit minions every day and then they have to trudge their moronic-asses up to those podiums and regurgitate whatever idiotic thing Trump dumped on them. That sometimes gives me a hint of solace these days imagining that to be the case.

CharlieBravo74 | 20 hours ago

“Help” for the shitbird incumbent isn’t how fiscal policy is supposed to work. Countries that operate like see their economies tank very quickly.

Detroit_Techno_Queen | 16 hours ago

Someone should tell Trump and Vance that isn’t how economics works.

Hey Vance, would you and Trump lower inflation so things cost less? Then we can legitimately lower interest rates?

gareth1229 | 15 hours ago

Trump’s trade war with the whole world and and war in Iran will continue to disrupt all essential commodity supplies for years to come creating more inflation which makes it impossible for central banks to lower interest rates.

Since Trump’s platform is a platform for destruction instead of building, US government might as well destroy its Fed and then itself in the process.

Alternative_Bid6735 | 16 hours ago

He doesn’t want help for the American people, he wants help lying to the American people and that’s fucking gross. He’s demanding they make moves not to secure the economic stability long term, but to do anything to make Trump look good no matter the consequences. They’re demanding we kill ourselves for their benefit. He’s a terrorist

larkfield2655 | 16 hours ago

Absolute bullshit. The mortgage rate is linked inextricably to the ten year yield. GOP printed $1trn to give to their donors - this is the result

severinks | 15 hours ago

Moron Trump installs a stooge as the head of the FED and still can't get his lower interest rates from them.

That should tell you all you need to know about the lower interest rates plan. I have a novel idea, maybe Trump should have not imposed those tariffs and started the war in Iran war and maybe he'd have lower interest rates right now.

ProudPPortuguese | 20 hours ago

All they want is to win the midterms.
For me it seems they don’t really care about inflation because any effect that stems from cutting rates or maintaining it would only have a negative effect directly to inflation in a few months, most likely after the midterms.

But it would have an immediate impact on the mortgage rates of ordinary people (while extremely shortsighted and could be side-lined by the effects from the bond-market) and these people only vote with their wallet at the moment of the elections, completely unable to think longer than that.

When my house was on fire, the most frustrating thing happened. I was running around trying to save all of my things but the fire trucks kept spraying water on them. It would have been nice to have some help.

Plastic-Helicopter45 | 19 hours ago

The thing is we were headed towards multiple rate cuts last year and this year- except this administration’s policies of tariffs and then starting a war and creating an oil crisis have disallowed that. So they want to implement policies and actions that fuel inflation AND then demand rate cuts? Hyper inflation here we come if that’s the case

whatisdylar | 18 hours ago

If you ask them, what about inflation? I wonder what their actual answer would be. Because I can't think of a good one. Nobody on the economic team in the White House could possibly agree with this stance.

Mackinnon29E | 18 hours ago

Not sure they did need the Feds help to avoid going to war with Iran and also avoiding massive tariffs on everything. They really believe their base is beyond stupid, and they're right.

SCWickedHam | 18 hours ago

Wahhhh. I guess the fed helped Biden, right? It’s always someone else’s fault when it doesn’t work. When it works, all the credit. Maybe Trump should start a “not a war” with the Fed.

-Astrobadger | 17 hours ago

They have both houses of congress, just pass a bill setting the interest rate to zero permanently. The long end will then reflect the possibility of that law being repealed.

BoulderADHDdad | 17 hours ago

“It would really help the GOP if the fed would help us make inflation so bad that we lose both houses of Congress and the DNC could put him in his place before more insane policy ideas turn every American outside of Texas into a democratic socialist.”

ComfortableBedroom76 | 17 hours ago

Show us that you know nothing about monetary policy without telling us that you know nothing about monetary policy

You can't lower interest rates when inflation is out of control like now because it just exasperates the problem

Interest rates must be held steady or even raised during the next FOMC meeting at the end of the month

some1guystuff | 17 hours ago

The ironic thing is the feds are trying to help, but you guys want them to do things in a dangerous way that is probably not gonna work out the way that they think it will because they don’t know what the fuck they’re talking about

Tone-Deft | 17 hours ago

The federal government’s financial plan can be seen in the annual budget. In current times there is a lack of an annual budget and merely continuing resolutions. This lack of a budget and actual plan is not a way to operate.

wmorris33026 | 17 hours ago

That’s not how any of this works. Vance is an arrogant dumbass. I swear to god, I pick a name off a list of undergrads in poli sci or economics and they could a better job than these people.

vertigo3pc | 17 hours ago

>“One of the main reasons he cares a lot about interest rates is because he wants Americans to be able to afford a home,” Vance said, referencing Trump. “When interest rates go higher, that means that borrowing costs are higher.”

>“We believe that the Fed should be lowering interest rates,” he said, calling it the “proper and responsible” response to recent U.S. inflation data.

And nobody asks the follow-up: "How would lowering interest rates help, when lowering interest rates has a devaluing affect on currency and generally raise costs?"

America has collapsed because this kind of ignorance is rewarded and promoted. USSR 1990 has nothing on us.

Prestigious-Fill-365 | 16 hours ago

They sound more and more like George Bush Sr. Everyday when he begged the fed to lower rates to cover for his incompetence as the US headed for his last election. . Hopefully the fed does what it should and raise rates but a hold will be equally bad for these idiots.

Distinct-Response907 | 16 hours ago

You can’t tell the bond market where interest rates should go, you have to show them- like reduce (or at this point nearly eliminate) deficit spending.

Pygmy_Nuthatch | 16 hours ago

They need some help increasing inflation.

Every single thing they've done so far has worked, but in order to pump their stocks and properties they need rampant inflation.

Why won't anyone help them?

watching_whatever | 16 hours ago

Opinion: Vance can’t be that ignorant, he must be trying to make the Fed hold rates steady. Otherwise,
another Republican leaders gross incompetence level was grossly underestimated.

If you are going to ask the Fed for help, how are you going to help by cutting spending and raising taxes to get the finances more in order.

Superb-Respect-1313 | 16 hours ago

This isn’t how it is suppose to work.

LMAO.

This administration cares little if at all for an independent FED. Preferring one that will do its bidding to grease the economy to give the appearance that things are better then they seem. Sadly the administration can’t control the bond market or they may be able to pull the wool over the people eyes.

Hilarious bunch these leaders of the free world.

AndreLeGeant88 | 16 hours ago

You can pick 2 of the 3:

  • Higher interest rates
  • Higher taxes
  • Lower inflation

I think lower rates and higher taxes - particularly on the wealthy and corporations - are superior to higher interest rates but Congress won't act

JackDostoevsky | 16 hours ago

just kicking the can down the road. the bond market definitely disagrees with him.

it's such a shame that the Republicans have abandoned all pretenses of being fiscally conservative. I suppose it's been trending this way for a while now: I saw that Paul Ryan has shown up again on the pundit circuits, which reminded me that his entire political career was torpedoed by the fact that he made an honest effort to try and reform Medicare. Not to get rid of it, mind you, but to make it more financially sustainable.

think what you will about specific priorities of the GOP, it's extremely obvious that they are no longer a party trying to be fiscally responsible and are more than happy to deficit spend like everyone else.

urlock | 15 hours ago

Trump floated the idea of refinancing the US Debt in his first term. There’s no way he doesn’t still think he can do that. It would explain his desire for low interest rates. Maybe he also can barely afford his interest payments as it is.

99kemo | 15 hours ago

Lower interest rates in order reduce unemployment, even though it might cause higher inflation, so to help Republicans in the next election. Wait until Democrats are in power to do the full on monetary tightening that will trigger a recession.

Dagger1901 | 15 hours ago

It would help if the goal was to devalue the currency, you just have to read between the lines. Trump certainly had some investments which would benefit from this.

writerpilot | 14 hours ago

I find it hilarious that the previous fed chair refused to lower rates when inflation was lower and the economy was more sound in order to get Trump back in office, then got stabbed in the back by Trump, and now Trump has created economic conditions where his replacement can’t lower rates because it would further nuke the economy.

Ok-Teaching3904 | 12 hours ago

Would be nice if you would stop borrowing money constantly. Would be nice if you increased taxes on the wealthy so you didn’t have to borrow money.

The Ivy League has really revealed itself to be totally corrupt. Seems like those degrees are for sale, and not based on any academic accomplishment or understanding.

This guy JD Vance has a Juris Doctor degree from Yale Law. Trump has a BS in Economics from Wharton school of business, as does Elon Musk. RFK Jr graduated from Harvard.

Even TV doctor, Dr Oz:
Harvard and Wharton make another appearance.

Dr. Oz received his undergraduate degree from Harvard University in 1982, which is part of the Ivy League. He also earned his joint M.D. and M.B.A. from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and the Wharton School, both of which are also part of the Ivy League

This is the bottom line behind the whole conversation. If you lower the interest rates, it just ends up pissing the banks off. As it means they make less money and that is a bank's entire point of existence, to take outrageous amounts of money from us by nefarious means. When they speak about our the entire economic system being rigged... the banking industry invented that slogan. Over the last forty years the banking industry has slowly, step by step, systematically changed the laws so that legal graft is now allowed. It is so apparent it robs most people blind. Rich Americans did this by changing the laws regulating banks, making it a one sided system rigged for the wealthy.

Lowering the interest rates alone is not going to help anyone buy a house. If you lower the interest rates the banks just changes the rules governing loan to borrowing ratios and credit scores so less people are offered lower interest rates. Banks have no interest in offering you lower interest, as it isn't in there best interest. Economy's are ruled by regulations, that protect average Americans from large corporation who rig the system in their favor. Instead of helping people, banks help themselves and use lower interest loans to borrow government money to buy back their own stock, like the did during the 2008 Great Recession. As there were no regulations to stop them. The Republicans saw to that. You could lower the interest rates to zero and it would not help average Americans, only the wealthy. As it is all about the great economic deceiver known as Trickle Down Economics. Lower interest rates are only good for the wealthy.

In America today, even the wealthy don't know they are wealthy, or even act that way. For a single person to make 90K a year in makes you wealthy in today's American economy. That puts you in the top twenty percent of all Americans. That means 72 million citizens our in the top bracket that rules the our economy, out of total American population of 360 million. In other words the banking industry doesn't really work well for the 288 million Americans who aren't wealthy and are struggling. The only thing the care about is being able to take you saving and checking account money and using it to invest in risky scheme's that make the owners of the banks wealthy beyond belief.

Vance wants you believe he is one of you, who needs help. He isn't. He is a member of the 1% of Americans like Trump who is after your wealth. The are trying to manipulate the Federal Reserve Bank to lower interest rates as a tactic to try and get your vote, while changing nothing that got us here in the first place.

Heres a kool idea that was used before the U.S. dollar became weaponized ... Start backing the dollar by gold rather than threats and oil you no longer control, and have Israel pay back all the money they took back from American tax payers, or sell stolen Israel land back to palestinians at 50% of your 40 trillion U.s. debt and take British gold in your holding as 25 trillion for the amount Britain caused this middle east shit in the first place!

Then...go after Pentagon with a fine tooth comb and audit the shot out of them going back to the first time they lost billions!

...and finally, freeze all Trump Organization business assets, due to misusing the American President title, and committing ongoing treason, racketeering war for profit, and causing the health of American Economy to become a bankrupted shell of what it once was and seize all billionaires to trilluonaires finances that profitted from the American Tax Payer!

Its a start but new laws needto retrofittedinto the Constitution to remove elite control of power and eliminate big money corporate control!

walterwhite1050 | 17 hours ago

How come Trump is the only president who ever asked for that oh, I’ll tell you why because lowering the interest rates benefits him. It doesn’t do anything for any of us or the United States of America

ThatOneFamiliarPlate | 20 hours ago

Cannot believe i have to say this again...

THE FED DOES NOT CONTROL INTEREST RATES!

The Federal Reserve controls the Discount Rate and the Fed Reserve Rate. Not the Interest Rate.

The Interest Rate is determined by the free market. The Federal Reserve can influence it by buying/selling securities, or changing the Discount Rate and/or the FRR. Some of the other factors that determine Interest rates are:

Government Spending

Trade surplus/deficit

Inflation

Unemployment

Credit demand/supply
