There are so many interesting nuggets in this article about American life and culture.
A random assortment:
“I spoke to several elderly couples, all of whom drove to the park multiple times a week to take advantage of the meal plan, which costs $149 per person for up to two meals per day — for the entire summer — from some of the park’s on-site fast-food vendors. “You can’t beat that,” said Leanne, who was sitting on a bench underneath a tree with her husband, Kurt, on a scooter, as they waited the requisite 180 minutes to get their second meal of the day.”
“Reese lives what he describes as a “simple life” in Century Village, a retirement community for people 55 and up. He’s had non-Hodgkins lymphoma for over 15 years and tells me he should have died several times, so he spends his days exactly how he likes. “I take naps in the morning, naps in the afternoon. This is mad crazy for me,” he said. He was going to a karaoke bar later. “I’m trying to get a handle on it, but I’m not going to ruin my very perfect life.””
“Kimmerle told me there was a COVID loophole that might explain the difference we were experiencing in our gaslit mouths. “The FDA issued a reprieve on ingredient decks in 2020 because food companies were considered ‘necessary,’” she said, meaning that, until late 2023, companies could make ingredient changes without having to reflect that on their packaging.”
“I’ve rarely interacted with anyone I think is an evil person in the candy business,” Liebig said. “They don’t see themselves as being in the candy business. They see themselves as being in the joy business.”
This is a great read! I sent it around to a few people.
I remember the bookstore I worked at would give out Hershey kisses to customers at Christmas, so there was a giant palette of boxes in the overheated office smelling like puke. I didn’t like Hershey kisses before, and I certainly don’t after.
I do really like the new Reese’s cup that has Reese’s Pieces inside…
