This could at least be turned into an opportunity for after-market operating systems, linux-based or not, if vendors would release hardware and driver documentation and/or source.

A legal requirement to do so, at least for bigger corporations, would probably the most realistic way to make that happen; I don't believe we can depend on goodwill here.

This is among other things, a question of ecology and resource allocation. Not having some supported (preferably open) operating systems for millions of Chromebooks (and phones) means possibly hundreds of millions working devices going into landfills over time.

I applaud the efforts of people around nura (formerly postmarketos) and similar projects and like to nudge everyone who has read this far to contribute time and/or money to them :)
