Scientists squeezed a tiny bit of water between two diamonds to millions of times Earth's pressure, then hit it with lasers, heating it above 2,000°C. Instead of boiling, the water froze into a weird "superionic ice" oxygen atoms locked in a crystal lattice while hydrogen nuclei flow around like a liquid. They found a new phase (hcp ice) that takes over at extreme pressure/temp. This stuff might exist deep inside Uranus and Neptune, and could explain their weird magnetic fields. Predicted 30+ years ago, first lab evidence in 2018. Study headed to Physical Review Letters.

The hydrogen moving through the ice can carry electrical charge which is why it matters for planetary magnetic field models.
