I can understand why they're embarrassed. My (college educated, young-ish) husband was scammed out of a comparatively tiny amount trying to get our dryer fixed a few months ago, and he still feels absolutely humiliated. He hasn't mentioned it to anyone. But everyone should raise a ruckus. We can't allow this shit to keep happening. Especially considering that these operations are completely traceable and if our government gave a single shit, it could totally do a lot to help.
hear hear! everybody gets taken for a ride sometimes because scammers are everywhere and many are professionals. it's easy to blame victims, but con artists depend on their victims' embarrassment to avoid consequences.
If you have been victimized by a scam like this, many countries have set up websites where you can report cybercrimes; for the US it's IC3.gov. Do not believe anyone who says they can get your money back; they are also scammers.

I think the penalties for fraud and theft need to be much higher. It is comprising the ability of society to function. It is compromising legitimate commerce. Our govt has the ability to crack down on countries that allow their people to do this and they do nothing but random tariffs over petty grievances.
this is awful but come on, why would you ever give money to someone online who you've never met?? and for that matter why would you give money to someone you've met in person who isn't your direct family or spouse? and I'm going to say why would you give money to anyone unless you had a surplus of money just laying around?? if you can't afford to lose the money why would you give it to someone?
