Although this reads like it’s about politics, and Miss Weiss may have even been personally motivated by her own politics, the reason she has always gotten so much pushback from professional journalists is because she is not a professional journalist.
She was not, and it’s not qualified for the position she was hired for. And she does not follow professional ethics.
This article highlights the corrosive effects of designing a political system that empowers a handful of the wealthiest people to buy ultimate control over policy.
The Heritage Foundation, empowered by the Republican Party’s slavish devotion, designed an oligarchy with steps like the Citizens United decision, the Dred Scott opinion of our era. It enshrined the “right” to essentially purchase politicians through bribes as a “free speech” right — making unlimited “campaign contributions” a Constitutional right not easily overridden by mere legislation.
Billionaires then bought CBS. Oracle oligarch Ellison and his born-on-third base inheritor son saw the advantages to cozying up to an objectively incompetent president (whom they fully realize is both a menace to the nation’s interests and openly for sale).
So, like Jeff Bezos did with the once highly respected Washington Post, they decided to turn CBS into a Trump toady propaganda machine, to curry favor with the president who can grease the skids for the Ellisons’
business objectives.
They join Rupert Murdoch and his inheritor son, Lachlan Murdoch, whose Defamation Channel has done more to destroy America than any other factor, in producing propaganda.
But unlike Fox “news,” which was created to broadcast propaganda (that its owners characterized as “entertainment” when sued for obvious defamation), CBS had a rich history of principles-based television journalism. Ms. Weiss, in order to do what the Ellisons hired her to do, trashed that history in favor of cynical fawning over a vain and vile politician.
Having lost its best people and its integrity, 60 Minutes is shedding viewers — and advertising dollars — like a Labrador retriever sheds in summer. The Ellisons are wagering that the investment pays off in terms of favors they must think they will get for “loyalty” to president.
But I suspect the Ellisons will soon learn that loyalty is a one-way street with the lame duck president.
