Supertanker chartered from Gulf Coast to China for $76 million, 10 times higher than pre-war level

No its okay, the oil is moving through famously secure pipelines that never get blown up and the US Navy can escort these tankers indefinitely. Taxpayers have endless pockets, and are super happy with to do so. Insurance rates are definitely not skyrocketing, everything is just fine. Nothing to see here

EnamelKant | a day ago

Surely completely stationary pipelines must be much harder to blow up than slow moving targets, right?

The new ones undulate evasively

CautiousOptimism09 | a day ago

I think all pipelines are now fitted with anti explosion flex seal nowdays. Billy Mays swears by it

KrzysziekZ | 21 hours ago

I think pipelines are indeed much harder to hit, but still hittable with guided munitions like glide bombs or a Shahed drone.

thankyou for your attention

Bro I think we have a card game business right there

The money is all just made up. Take it out of the equation and we can still build boats and move them around everywhere. Or some shit like that idk.

BadgersHoneyPot | 22 hours ago

But Iran can hold out forever, right?

CautiousOptimism09 | 21 hours ago

I think if you're fighting for your survival you have more incentive to fight harder than if you just want to do imperialism

BadgersHoneyPot | 21 hours ago

Lol, the Iranians who were "fighting" are all dead at the hands of the Regime and buried. Everyone else is just trying to keep their heads down and survive. 90% inflation, food running low, no exports. Aligned with Russia and to some extent China. And every day that ticks by, people figure out other ways to move goods.

Because this is r/Economics, and we know that when there's a profit, there's a way. Who wuldathunk.

Prestigious_Load1699 | 15 hours ago

Interestingly, it appears that Iran’s oil exports have dropped to zero due to the blockade, but overall gulf region exports are at about 85% of pre-war levels.

Saudi Arabia, among others, has picked up the slack and one wonders how devastating this arrangement must be for the Islamic Republic.

I mean, how could this be sustainable for Iran? It must be crippling them.

BadgersHoneyPot | 11 hours ago

Of course it's crippling them. And you can see it in the data. But to many posters - including posters here on r/Economics - Iran is a bunch of brave freedom fighters holding out against their political opponent, Donald Trump.

A lot of these posters are convinced that Iran is going to pull some sneaky 1980 hostage release, where after Trump leaves office Iran will suddenly be friends with Democrats. That's wishful thinking.

Did Vietnam become friend with a new US administration? Did they mount a huge offensive that push out all of the US troops out of their country? Did they build a massive, hidden industrial complex to export to China and the USSR?

I'm fuzzy on these details, maybe I should ask on r/AskHistorians, because I can't remember any of this. I can't remember the wave after wave of Vietnam attack helicopters and aircrafts bombing US and South Vietnam positions relentlessly.

Yet at some point, there was the fall of Saigon. And I remember, in my lifetime, seeing Afghanistan fall quite rapidly.

All Iran has to do is hold out long enough for the US to get tired of the cost of this war.

They have borders they still control and they live there, we don't.

How'd that Afghanistan thing work out for us again?

BadgersHoneyPot | 3 minutes ago

There are so many Regime water carriers here.

bautofdi | a day ago

As long as Trump keeps his war going, prices will be increasingly higher no matter how much oil moves through the strait.

They’re going to say “volume is back at prewar levels!” and not even mention that transportation costs are now 5-10x higher

FoolOnDaHill365 | a day ago

It’s all so regarded. People are just tuned out from reality at this point because nothing makes sense.

HowdyDiarrhea | 22 hours ago

About half of Americans have been tuned out of reality for a long fucking time

We’re at least fucked for the next two years, will be longer by the time Trump is out.

Yep so says the industry:

The damage will take a while to recover.

SandIntelligent247 | 10 hours ago

You selfish people only ever think of the poor and middle class people.

What about Trump? If a little war can help with approval rating, you should support that. If tariff can help make him a little billion or two, don’t you want to reward this president a little for all the hard work he does?

This man is 80 years old and sleep in his shit during meeting. Wouldn’t you say he’s going above and beyond? Do YOU ever sleep in your shit during important meeting? See, poor person mindset.

The Strait is never going to be "free" passage ever again, certainly not at least in my lifetime it won't be. Iran broke the glass and found itself a new weapon hiding behind it, and they're unlikely to give that up anytime soon. So get used to $5usd/gl gas or greater as these added costs get passed along to the refiners.
