Right? My response reading the headline was “literally just stop fighting Iran.” and seriously, that’s all it would take. Stop fighting, stop propping up the current, genocidal, regime in Israel, let the people who actually live there sort it all out for themselves for once. The Middle East only gets shitty when outsiders try to swing their genitals around, so stop doing that!
So I understand the first order of thinking here. But what about the second and third order? While Trump was an idiot for this folly, I’m interested in hearing the thinking of people who say to just leave and let them deal with it.
I'm not sure that's even particularly true, tbh. Iran didn't provoke the US in the first place. We used the true human rights atrocities there combined with fake nuclear weapon fears as excuses to attack.
We assumed incorrectly that they couldn't fight back and that they had no chance of international support.
At this point, the world hates us so much and we've caused so much global turmoil that Iran has nothing but leverage.
They're not backing down because they want to inflict pain, they're not backing down because they can't. We put them in a position to where they can only gain economically and gain regional influence. That's a reality they seem acutely aware of using their official social media account posts as an indicator.
The cherry on top is that the US military looks stupid and weak for failing to do anything but cause multiple economies to burn into severe recession, including our own. Iran is also running laps with Chinese weapons and cheap drones that our dwindling munitions can't continue to shoot down with the current cost of millions per round and years to replace. A ground invasion can't and won't work either.
My tentative prediction is that the likely significant losses of MAGA seats in the legislature this November will result in congressional action to end it. Maga will scream and cry about it while being secretly relived that it's over and that they didn't have to eat crow with their base about this catastrophic mess they caused.
We are spending billions and lost our credibility to protect our partners in the region….just to try and end up with a worse deal than what Obama made.
Additionally, if anything (and in respect to the US never touching NK) reinforced that having a Nuke is the only way for Iran to not be threatened. All while building an Alliance between Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and Pakistan. And SA wanting to get a nuke.
Pakistan allegedly has about 170 nukes. I suspect a few of them will get deployed into Saudi territory. And then they'll lose track of them in their rush to spend all the new Saudi investment they're going to get.
Very good point. We say we are against nuclear proliferation, but the difference in how we treat countries with nukes and those without is so stark that we might as well tell the world that if you want to be able to push back against the US at all you need nukes.

We wouldn't be so scared of them having nukes if we haven't tried to control their entire existence for the past however long we have. Perhaps America deserves whatever Iran has planned for it. I realize life is more complicated and nuanced than this, but in the end this will be what it all boils down to.
