Oral sex is now the leading risk factor for throat cancer

“HPV vaccination of young girls has been implemented in many countries to prevent cervical cancer. There is now increasing, albeit as yet indirect evidence, that it may also be effective in preventing HPV infection in the mouth. There is also some evidence to suggest that boys are also protected by “herd immunity” in countries where there is high vaccine coverage in girls (over 85%). Taken together, this may hopefully lead in a few decades to the reduction of oropharyngeal cancer.”

mintyfreshismygod | 1 year, 1 month ago

...or we could vaccinate boys too? The vaccine protects all from genital warts, so not a bad thing for all.

Idont_thinkso_tim | 1 year, 1 month ago

You can get it as a man in Canada. Think you need to be under 40 though.

Thanks4allthefiish | 1 year, 1 month ago

They'll give it to you over 40. You need to ask and they recommend 3 doses, but you should be able to get it at any competent pharmacy.

givemelullabies | 1 year, 1 month ago

Guidelines in Canada have recently changed - seems only 2 doses are now recommended (regardless of whether male/female)

Source. Note that’s it’s for the 9vHPV vaccine (ie. Gardasil-9)

Edit: to include source

littlemeowmeow | 1 year, 1 month ago

Could you please link with a source? I started my course when 3 was recommended but only ended up with two due to challenges with COVID vaccines and family doctor going on leave. Thank you!

givemelullabies | 1 year, 1 month ago

Added a source! It seems even one dose may provide decent protection for at least 11 years and for maximal protection the timing of two doses matters (ideally 6 months apart)

littlemeowmeow | 1 year, 1 month ago

Thank you! I wasn’t able to find this updated guidance on my public health unit website.

givemelullabies | 1 year, 1 month ago

My impression is that not every public health unit has rolled it out yet given how new it is. You’re welcome!

Todesfaelle | 1 year, 1 month ago

As opposed to the incompetent ones which rifle through a drawer of vials and picks whatever one feels right in that moment.

Sometimes you win, sometimes it's priapism.

whatever604 | 1 year, 1 month ago

Not for free if you’re over 18. But all the boys and girls now get it in grade 6 as a part or normal schedule which is good. Unfortunately when I was in high school it was only for girls so I had to pay to get mine

ellathefairy | 1 year, 1 month ago

Believe in the US they will give it to men up to 45 now. My 40yo partner just got the vaccine this year. You have to ASK though, they're not offering/ recommending. Which i think is pretty shitty tbh.

PatientSeb | 1 year, 1 month ago

I live in Washington and the pharmacy I usually get my vaccines from just texted me out of the blue to inform me that I was ‘eligible’ to come get this for free - as if I’d won a game show. Was a little bizarre, but I appreciated the effort. I’m already vaccinated but it’s the thought that counts

ellathefairy | 1 year, 1 month ago

That's great that they are being proactive about it! More places should be.

dfddfsaadaafdssa | 1 year, 1 month ago

They offered it when I went to CVS to pick up meds. Covid, Flu, HPV, and something else. If it's a needle and prevents something bad I want it. Took four shots like a champ that day and had to go back twice. Apparently it's three rounds.

ellathefairy | 1 year, 1 month ago

Wow that's a lot at once! HPV+flu alone had me ready to pass out back in the day haha. Good for you!

because virtually all adults who are already sexually active have already been exposed to HPV, so it's useless. It's not a recommendation without a reason. That's basically why it's not approved at all for anyone over 45.

ellathefairy | 1 year, 1 month ago

I think for people who are with multiple partners where you would be risking new exposures to different strains, they have found it still helps, or they wouldn't keep raising the age. Back when I got it, they wouldn't give to anyone over their mid-twenties.

Which is in line with the recommendations. Not offered unless patient circumstances dictate. I don't think that's shitty at all. It's prudent given spiraling costs money has to go to the most bang for the buck.

ceruleancityofficial | 1 year, 1 month ago

my boyfriend is in his thirties and was able to get it. we're both in the u.s.

HimalayanPunkSaltavl | 1 year, 1 month ago

I was turned down twice as a guy in my 30s but randomly getting my flue/covid shots this year they were like "uh ok we can do it if you want, it's really only for people that are going to have more sexual partners"

and I was like "A) thanks for your confidence in my ability to pull and B) thanks for pointing out that I havent settled down"

thistrolls4hire | 1 year, 1 month ago

It’s not free after 18 (in ON at least). Then it becomes quite expensive (like $100’s of dollars per dose). Most private insurance plans won’t cover it either. Our system gives very slightly great than 0 fucks for preventative medicine.

curiousgardener | 1 year, 1 month ago

Wanted it, cost prohibitive for my demographic (AB, single income, family of four, I can't work due to pending epileptic/migraine diagnosis). I'm married and we have kids.

They will get it via the new health regulations and I'm saving up for my doses, eventually.

You know. If the cost of everything doesn't spike again.

Delusional? Me?

Pffft!

Bladestorm04 | 1 year, 1 month ago

I assume anyway can get it if they choose to pay for it. Does canada cover it under MSP fir men too?

master-of-the-5-ways | 1 year, 1 month ago

My son got his done through his pediatrician in Seattle.

I might have asked them to do it though, I'm not sure.

ZookeepergameThin306 | 1 year, 1 month ago

My mother is a nurse and forced me and my brother to get the HPV vaccine when we were young.

Hurt like a fucking bitch but I'm grateful she did that for us.

Queendevildog | 1 year, 1 month ago

Good for your mom! I had to argue with my ex but my kids got the HPV vaccine too.

Why did it hurt?

ZookeepergameThin306 | 1 year, 1 month ago

It's just a painful injection compared to normal shots.

I'm a T1 Diabetic who receives regular blood work so I'm extremely used to needles. It's not unbearable or anything but the HPV shot definitely hurts more then a usual vaccine or injection

Diels_Alder | 1 year, 1 month ago

The vaccine has been approved for boys since 2011.

They do, I got mine from army doctor 12-13 years ago. Was in for my quarterly sti test and it was suggested that I get it.

You know they will absolutely lose it over giving this vaccine to young boys 🤣

charcharasaurus | 1 year, 1 month ago

My son got the HPV vaccine about a year or two ago. 🤷🏻

Love it!

I’m also guessing you’re not part of the they I was referring to haha

tweedlebettlebattle | 1 year, 1 month ago

You'd be surprised! Brazil vaccinate both sexes, and its a good indicator of "sex health" in cities (a city with good coverage has good health indicators regarding health).

Yeah! Brazil is a mix of "that sucks" with "that's amazing". Therefore, COME TO BRAZIL

COME TO BRAZIL COME TO BRAZIL COME TO BRAZIL COME TO BRAZIL COME TO BRAZIL COME TO BRAZIL COME TO BRAZIL COME TO BRAZIL COME TO BRAZIL

Cum to Brazil!

01101011010110 | 1 year, 1 month ago

My son is getting it.

I would like mine to get it too!

I got recommended for it when I was 12 years old or so, about 15 years ago. Bay Area, California. I didn’t end up getting it based on my records, but now I’m currently at 2 shots of 3.

Who is they?

I think anyone who isn't an anti vaxxer will be down to take this vaccine.

SpikeProteinBuffy | 1 year, 1 month ago

They do vaccinate boys too, in Finland at least. To protect girls and also boys. First the vaccination program started with girls only, and now also boys can get them if they want. And gladly many of them do want it.

MegannMedusa | 1 year, 1 month ago

In America it is available to ALL children 9+.

Walleyevision | 1 year, 1 month ago

Blasphemy! Only females shall be considered disease carriers and thus responsible for getting vaccinated.

/sarcasm for those who don’t recognize it

Of course we should encourage juvenile males to get it also!

Electrocat71 | 1 year, 1 month ago

It’s my kids got it as standard vaccine schedule here in Illinois. Then again, we’re not idiots who think that vaccines cause autism or put 5g chips in your blood…

Sea-Owl-7646 | 1 year, 1 month ago

My mom made sure I got the full series, I had some rough side effects with the HPV ones but no regrets. Now she's become very anti-vaxx, very anti-medicine, and claims that my PCOS and hormonal imbalance was all caused by the vaccines when I had symptoms way before I started them. Fun times...

Electrocat71 | 1 year, 1 month ago

Oui. As someone with very questionable relatives I feel for you. My boys had zero from hpv, but meningitis gave them both a slight fever and severe headache… it’s weird as my wife and I got flu&covid jabs last year and literally had no side effects. This year, she got a headache.. me nada. I feel like there’s a common cold correlation with some vaccines. But anyway, it’s important that we keep doing these, for ourselves and others. Slight inconveniences for a day or two… big deal.

Rehypothecator | 1 year, 1 month ago

Yup, they’re the vector of transmission. Would be much more effective if boys were vaccinated , if they had to choose one of the two sexes.

Ok-Quail2397 | 1 year, 1 month ago

They recommend all kids at the age of 11 get the HPV vaccine. I believe some places start it as early as 9 years old.

existentialzebra | 1 year, 1 month ago

I have a boy who was vaccinated. Is this not common?

Yeah, I'm lost, my kid got it as soon as it was approved

Who are the slacker parents?!

Leading_Waltz1463 | 1 year, 1 month ago

It wasn't when the vaccine first came out. The evidence for HPV cancers in men was more scarce, so they prioritized trials and marketing for girls and women.

existentialzebra | 1 year, 1 month ago

Ah got you.

Mine in the US were both vaccinated. It was optional but we suggested they get it and they did. There was no cost with our insurance.

That's the first sub title in the article lol

solidshakego | 1 year, 1 month ago

Did you skim over the "taken together..." part when you commented this? Lol. Everyone knows that everyone should get vaccinated. Which is what this article/quote suggests.

TheShadowKick | 1 year, 1 month ago

The "taken together..." part is referring to the combination of increasing vaccination rates of young girls and the benefits of herd immunity.

saftey_dance_with_me | 1 year, 1 month ago

I got my son vaccinated at 12 in the US.

DreamzOfRally | 1 year, 1 month ago

Well my mom got me vaccinated over a decade ago so there are some

BulletTheDodger | 1 year, 1 month ago

They do.

petit_cochon | 1 year, 1 month ago

They do vaccinate boys per current recommendation.

Admirable-Book3237 | 1 year, 1 month ago

They do don’t they? I’m pretty sure . My teens got it

SubjectMatter | 1 year, 1 month ago

I modeled this at some point as part of my job. Just under 50% of an age cohort is enough to pretty much end transmission of the virus.

Of course there are other arguments outside the analytical: stigma and equity of access play a role.

jason_abacabb | 1 year, 1 month ago

Boys do get it if requested. My teenage boy got the series on recommendation from his pediatrician. (USA)

TheeLastSon | 1 year, 1 month ago

i really wished general warts were a myth but of course people are that gross.

Radandrusty | 1 year, 1 month ago

Fun fact the HPV vaccine is available for boys and men now "to prevent penile cancer" but also likely helps prevent oropharyngeal cancers too! See your doctor to inquire about it, source: Am a 30+ year old male in healthcare getting the vaccine series now. Why not have less cancer?! Also quit smoking/chewing tobacco for decreased other types of major risks.

Queendevildog | 1 year, 1 month ago

Yes! And good guys tend to be the ones that get HPV throat cancer. The vaccine is safe and will save families so much grief.

letstrythatagainn | 1 year, 1 month ago

Is it ever too late to get the vaccine?

I’m 40 and I got it earlier this year when I got a Covid booster.

feminine_power | 1 year, 1 month ago

I'm 54 and tried to get it and was turned down

SOL-Cantus | 1 year, 1 month ago

I got it a couple years ago, in my mid-30s. There's no question it's worth it compared to the damage to you and others if HPV is spread.

FourEightNineOneOne | 1 year, 1 month ago

Good to know, thank you!

Wait what???, can vaginas cause penile cancer now?😱 wtf..! So what are the odds of getting throat or penilie cancer? Is vagina that much of a high risk? OMG the world has gone insane :(

howdiedoodie66 | 1 year, 1 month ago

Penile cancer is still very rare in men under 60 unless you have a family genetic link like I do. My grandpa died from it at 91.

Ah ok, thanks

Justintimeforanother | 1 year, 1 month ago

.Cough. Cough. There’s a VACCINATION?! !

I worked in cancer prevention for a while and there are a large number of hpv associated cancers that affect men so it's definitely worth getting vaccinated to protect yourself and your partner

The article seems to suggest it's from vaginas unless im reading it wrong. Should we be sucking more dick to protect ourselves?

“Giving top for cancer awareness” 🥹

The only rational conclusion

Garbage283736 | 1 year, 1 month ago

Nowhere does it actually state or imply that it "comes from vaginas" it merely says people who practice oral sex. as in, everybody. the only related information is that women are generally the only ones who receive the vaccine, and men get some element of herd immunity. The issue is more prevalent in countries with less of the female population vaccinated. The article itself says however that men should also be vaccinated and I agree. HPV has largely been thought to not affect men as seriously as women, who can develop cervical cancer. This has added to the false belief that men don't need to be vaccinated for HPV and has likely contributed to it's proliferation.

HPV is a different beast. In several years we’ll probably find out that different types of HPV are responsible for most cancers.

Another big theory is that other carcinogens aren’t actually causing the cancer, but damage the skin lining allowing HPV to infect a higher number of cells.

EmeraldIbis | 1 year, 1 month ago

When I was growing up the HPV vaccine was only offered to girls. An absolutely ridiculous decision, not only because men can get HPV-induced oral and rectal cancers, but also because we missed the opportunity to eliminate the virus from circulation.

CapeTownMassive | 1 year, 1 month ago

Tried to ask my (M) doc for an HPV vaccine. She said they don’t prescribe it to men 😩

homoastronaut | 1 year, 1 month ago

If you are in America, I was able to get the HPV vax at my local CVS (drugstore pharmacy like Walgreens, rite aid, Duane Reade, etc.) with no prescription or referral required (even tho my PCP approved it as a good idea anyways). I booked the appointment online through their website but the pharmacist told me I could’ve just walked in too. Just call ahead and make sure they have it in stock first, the Walgreens stores in my area had none in stock but CVS did.

What country? Is there are shortage or something? I was vaccinated over 10 years ago, didn't even ask for it.

calmandreasonable | 1 year, 1 month ago

Planned parenthood gives the hpv vaccine, check with them. 35 year old man, and I am halfway through my inoculation.

SOL-Cantus | 1 year, 1 month ago

Go to planned parenthood, they'll do it.

True, but the vaccine only protects against 80% of strains of HPV. There are still a few that you are vulnerable to even with the vaccine. Just have to decide for yourself what kind of risks you're willing to take for sex. More sexual partners means more risk.

Cantholditdown | 1 year, 1 month ago

huh, so michael douglas wasn't being cheeky when he said he got his throat cancer from going down on his wife, catherine zeta jones.

Good thing i eat ass, its healthier. Thanks science.

Sam Riegel from critical role and legend of Vox Machina (and 2 time Emmy winner and Ace Attorney etc) just spoke about this. He was absent from critical role for months upon learning his diagnoses. They had to remove part of his tongue and throat and relearn to talk. I recommend watching his video. It’s powerfu

i'm currently going through this, and seeing sam's recovery gave me hope.

and seeing his return was fucking awesome.

Damn, how did they catch yours? Did you have symptoms or was it picked up on some routine test?

well, that's a story.

i had been having neck pains for a couple months, but i'm 54, and spend a shitload of time on steam, i have over 100 games.

so i chalked the pain up to bad posture, there was one day when i suddenly developed such horrid headaches that i was violently nauseous and ended up in the ER. the doctors in the ER did a cat scan of my head, and found nothing unusual.

now.. while i was in the ER i suddenly lost my voice, like couldn't speak above a whisper. when i said something to the ER doc he said it's just that the air was dry and that i should gargle.

my voice didn't come back after 3 days, so i scheduled an appointment with an otolayrngologist myself. well, turns out this guy is the head of the head and neck cancer department at the hospital i'm being treated at. he put that camera thing down the back of my throat through my nose and immediately saw a tumor.

they took a biopsy that confirmed i have an HPV+ squamous cell carcinoma, this tumor has paralyzed my vocal cords on the left side. and it or maybe another tumor is wrapped around my internal carotid artery. i never really asked after he said cancer.

if the ER docs had scanned my neck as well they would have seen it. if i hadn't been such a numpty and saw a doctor when i was hurting they would have found it weeks earlier, and i would likely still be able to speak.

thankfully the full body scan that was done showed that the cancer wasn't anywhere besides my neck, and the biopsy showed that the tumor markers made me an excellent candidate for immunotherapy. so i got that going for me.

i have a scan on the 28th, the bad part about that is that the hospital i have to go to for the scan is an hour away and i need to be there at 6am.

oh and to top it off, my oncologist thinks at some point i may have suffered a stroke. because my left eye is droopy and i drool from the left side of my mouth if i'm not paying attention. we suspect this happened when i was either having my port installed, or when i had oral surgery to remove my last 17 teeth.

It almost made me cry!

Soooo....back in the 70's, when people were beginning to talk openly about sex, and a few frank books were being written, a doctor who used to work at the Haight-Asbury Free Clinic in SF came to our college and gave a lecture about sex. He had a hip, straightforward presentation and a pretty hilarious slide show, and then there was a Q&A session. One very nervous young man then asked "Can you get anything bad from....umm...uhhh...eating pussy? I mean, you know- like cancer?"......and the whole crowd laughed, mostly because of his inflection. And to which the good doctor replied..."NO, you CAN'T get cancer from oral sex!" Just when you think you know it all.....

dangerous_eric | 1 year, 1 month ago

Get the HPV vaccine, even if you're an adult male. Then get the newer ones when they come out in the future.

My GF won’t like hearing this

FacelessFellow | 1 year, 1 month ago

Babe, I got a note from the doctor!

Square-Dragonfruit76 | 1 year, 1 month ago

The title is misleading. It's HPV that is causing the cancer. Get the vaccine.

Fickle_Assumption_80 | 1 year, 1 month ago

Who's "The Conversation" and why should we believe this?

farpostfermenter | 1 year, 1 month ago

I understand the gravity of it and will be advising my children of the risks when they’re of age

Queendevildog | 1 year, 1 month ago

Just get them the vaccine. It will protect your girls from cervical cancer and your sons from throat cancer.

Ive lost two men in my family, good guys , from HPV throat cancer. My family misses them. Do your future grandkids a favor so their Dad's are around to see their children.

Whoever made this article has had the worst head of all time

FernandoMM1220 | 1 year, 1 month ago

these cancer causing viruses are pretty nasty.

Difficult-Way-9563 | 1 year, 1 month ago

I always thought HPV should be offered/given/ covered for every event guys, for this reason exactly.

ScorpionDog321 | 1 year, 1 month ago

Correction: not among monogamous married couples.

Now we have cancer to add to the threat of promiscuity.

Square-Dragonfruit76 | 1 year, 1 month ago

I mean, you can just get the vaccine

TheShadowKick | 1 year, 1 month ago

Unless one of them had HPV prior to the marriage.

ScorpionDog321 | 1 year, 1 month ago

True. Bringing diseases into your marriage from previous sexual flings is unfortunately not a strange occurrence today.

Better off not acquainting your new wife or husband with a nasty disease.

SuperNiceStickyRice | 1 year, 1 month ago

Well that sucks.

And it always has?

AvailableFunction435 | 1 year, 1 month ago

Badum tss!

Queendevildog | 1 year, 1 month ago

My cousin died from complications of HPV throat cancer. He was too young. Another friend almost lost her husband.

Boy moms! Get your sons the HPV vaccine!

What about one partner? Is that still risky? Cmon!

i had 3. and i have throat cancer, so maybe it's not the number of partners.

TheShadowKick | 1 year, 1 month ago

The risk increases with the number of partners but you can get unlucky and get infected from your first partner. That's the magic of statistics.

FandomTrashForLife | 1 year, 1 month ago

Seems irresponsible to not state its Herpes from oral sex, not the act of oral sex itself.

Remember when Michael Douglas released a press release saying he suffers from throat cancer probably caused by oral sex and the global press ridiculed him?

MaynardAgent | 1 year, 1 month ago

That sucks

First they come for alcohol and now this

kelsobjammin | 1 year, 1 month ago

Great.

Foreign_Acadia3937 | 1 year, 1 month ago

So as an older male (mid forties) who could possibly be at higher risk due to multiple partners in previous years (though monogamous now) is there any way to reduce or mitigate the risk such as by getting a HPV vaccination or specific check ups for early detection?

TheShadowKick | 1 year, 1 month ago

That's a question for a doctor, not Reddit.

Foreign_Acadia3937 | 1 year, 1 month ago

Very astute, who knows perhaps a doctor will answer the question!

My wife is doing her part to keep cancer rates low.

Minute-Constant-3768 | 1 year, 1 month ago

That’s a misleading title, it’s mainly HPV that is contracted FROM ORAL SEX that is causing the cancer.

Useless Fear is the mind killer.

So maybe don’t sleep around so much or know your partner a lot better before you sleep with them.

IF YOU AINT GETIN NONE OR IF YOU IN A HEALTHY LONGTERM RELATIONSHIP, YOU SAFE

Queendevildog | 1 year, 1 month ago

HPV is extremely common. It only takes one exposure. The vaccine is safe and its better than being sorry.

Minute-Constant-3768 | 1 year, 1 month ago

True!

Everything gives you cancer nowadays. Eat away boys and girls.

Square-Dragonfruit76 | 1 year, 1 month ago

ProcedureFun768 | 1 year, 1 month ago

“ Those with six or more lifetime oral-sex partners are 8.5 times more likely to develop oropharyngeal cancer than those who do not practise oral sex.”  Do people stop practicing safe sex after 6 partners? WTH

TheShadowKick | 1 year, 1 month ago

Probably they didn't practice safe sex with the first five partners, either. But the more partners they have the higher the odds they catch something from them.

Upstairs_Gas4578 | 1 year, 1 month ago

And you say it now...?!

lapsaptrash | 1 year, 1 month ago

Well party is over I guess

You can also catch herpes from oral sex. I just want to put that here because soooo many people don’t realise.

If you’ve never had a cold sore, and some who has had cold sores (don’t need to have an active one at the time) goes down on you, you could catch type 1 herpes on your genitals.

DocMalcontent | 1 year, 1 month ago

Article also states 80% of those surveyed responded to giving.

Only 80%.

Some folk are just rude.
