For an unforgettable portrait of murderer Dylann Roof, using a unique and powerful mix of reportage, first-person reflection and analysis of the historical and cultural forces behind his killing of nine people inside Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, S.C.

This is great and important writing. However, I think like everyone else the author has failed to crack the mystery.

I as a southerner (though not one from roof’s background) think the mystery isn’t one, but we just don’t want to recognize and accept the reality. And that is that Roof comes from a culture that has normalized racism. He took it to an extreme level with his murder and his refusal to soften in any way or to participate in any explanatory activities. But he’s part of an ecosystem. In which he could essentially walk up to the line of violence as much as he wanted for any reason he wanted and suffer no consequences. From there it was a short trip to being able to murder 9 innocent people.

And side note, but this is the kind of person for whom the death penalty was made.

I remember reading and being thoroughly fascinated by this article when it was released. As a young 21 year old Australian woman, I didn’t know anything about this part of the world. I went back to this article quite a few times. The portraits of his mother and girlfriend were really interesting to me. May the victims rest in peace.
