Total misinformation, cats absolutely can and do fart audibly. They're inherently stealth-oriented animals, so they mostly do so quietly.
all you need to make noise anally is a sphincter and gas escaping. Do you shit silently? no. Are your butt cheeks clasped together while you dump? I'd hope not.
It's a tactic employed by shy poopers. Laying down a few sheets of toilet papper on the surface of the bog water to slow down the incoming turd and reduce the noise it makes.
Well that was informative. I don't know what I'll do with this info but I sincerely appreciate the write up. Godspeed and enjoy your depths of knowledge.
“Cats are farting all the time,” says Nick Cave, a specialist veterinarian at Totally Vets in Feilding, New Zealand, who has written about animal farts, including in the 2013 textbook Canine and Feline Gastroenterology. “They are passing gas.” Many other animals, including most mammals, snakes and some fish fart, too—although the jury is reportedly still out on spiders.
I had a pitbull when I was younger, and when he was a puppy he ripped a loud fart. It startled him and made him jump, then he started barking at his ass. It was one of the funniest pet moments I've ever experienced.
I have heard my cats fart, but they’re generally not too… odorous. The dog, on the other hand, is bad enough that I have erroneously blamed the boyfriend lol
Oh she had like, a grape sized amount of broccoli and that was it, just to monitor her reaction to it before I considered adding it to her regular veggie rotation.
And she gassed us out three times on the 20min drive home after eating only that much lol. That was last Christmas, and she hasn’t had any since.
And again, I wasn't trying to drag you or anything. Broccoli makes my stomach go crazy.
Back in my "gym days" I was constantly unhappy with my stomach with the combo of broccoli and whey protein lol. Have you ever wanted to punch your own butt?...I may have revealed too much.
Hahaha I feel that, but it’s not broccoli that does that to me, it’s Dairy Queen ice cream lmao
Not any other dairy source, not any other type of ice cream, only Dairy Queen. It’s the only thing where I need to take a lactase supplement or I am hating my life for the rest of the day.
So I always introduce new things in small amounts with my pup because I know I can’t handle tummy pain for shit, and I don’t want that for her either.
Also, she’s a pit mix, and already has a chicken sensitivity, so I am always on the lookout for some new food sensitivity to pop up because pits tend towards being… gastrointestinally delicate, I guess lol
I also have a cat with IBD, my delicate little babies
Oh hey! I actually think might have an answer for you. Do you know much about carageenan? It's a seaweed derived thickener that is in quite a few products.
Dairy queen uses it as part of their base for their soft serve. You might also note that the Lactaid brand milk also contains it (for some weird reason) and a lot of people with lactose issues complain about feeling sick after having it.
This is very interesting, I may have to investigate further!
Generally I just don’t eat it (healthiest option anyway lmao), but when I do, I take two lactaid and it’s usually fine, but I can’t say I haven’t been curious about why this happens!
Holy hell can we swap cats or something? I love our dapper Tuxedo boy (Clark W. Grizzwold - Grizz for short) but his farts are DEATH (as are his shits).
We have tried so many things and foods (even our vets just say he is a lovely stinky well dressed lil dude).
My IBD cat has the stinkiest poops in the world, omg. He’s not gassy, but his poops are awful.
If you haven’t yet already tried it, I would try a food with hydrolyzed protein (usually from your vet). My poor IBD dude is much better on the vet food
I assure you they do. Especially one cat my friend had when we were kids. She was like a walking stink bomb. Squeeze her at all and she'd let one rip bad enough to clear the room.
I remember a friend of mine's cat many years ago. On a special diet of some kind. But many times a day this incredibly foul stank would just creep through the house. 🤢
My cat 13yrs farted while in my lap for the first time the other day. It reeked! Then I got worried and had to check her litter box in case she had diarrhea or something, she was fine….First time for everything!

You don't need a phd to know cats indeed fart. The times my cat has gassed the room with a silent toot...

My kitten loves farting on us. Just silent whiffs while she innocently cuddles and we suffocate.

Yes they bloody well fart.
They fart like sailors !

Unless this is a quote and I'm not catching it, I've never heard my cat fart.
What kind of diet do your cats have? Mine are on a mix of Fancy Feast (wet food) and Iams (dry food).
seilrelies | 14 hours ago
They don’t possess butt flaps so their farts are silent but lethal.
Lower_Ad_1317 | 14 hours ago
This is true. And they just love showing that balloon knot don’t they. 🤷🏼🤦♂️🎈

Not exactly the scientific response I was looking for, but uh, thanks.

Lower_Ad_1317 | 14 hours ago
Yes they are on a mixed dry and wet diet. But you don’t always hear it. It isn’t always a disruptive “phlarp”. But it can be smelly.
When I have heard it, it was civilised, unremarkable, pushed out, but with an air of good manners.
I believe they don’t actually plan them but they just find their way out.
I can add detail but if you have a cat and you have never detected them doing it then you are missing one of natures greatest achievements.
To all intents and purposes the feline fart is the perfect fart.

If a dog farts, they own their own farts. If a cat farts they look at you and get mad at you for creating a stinky environment.

rumshpringaa | 17 hours ago
Mine is allergic to chicken (dog, not husband) and before we figured it out, her farts would make your eyes burn
Ariandrin | 16 hours ago
It was when my dog has eaten something that she normally doesn’t. Like if she’s tried a new human food. Particularly broccoli lol
With just her kibble and her normal veggies, her farts are just little puffs of air with no smell at all lol
Greendale_Official | 15 hours ago
Small note, dogs can be allergic to broccoli: that all said broccoli causes gastric distress in most humans too.
Not suggesting that you were doing anything wrong, I just thought it was worthy of note.
