I’m sure it helps that I’m unemployed, and thus only run software consensually, but I feel like the only person that isn’t either AI obsessed or upset by it. LLMs are extremely useful for the volunteer/hobby work I do. AI generated images are garbage. AI videos even worse. Embeddings/semantic search is god tier tech. Image segmentation, depth estimation, object detection is amazing. It’s a mixed bag but overall I’m super interested and happy with the capabilities available.
The LibreOffice 26.8 case answers a question I and others have had since 2023: if the whole market now offers AI baked in software of every kind, is there really no room for AI-free alternatives to stand out?

I think it's the difference between a tool (ie neural-net pattern matching), and next-gen Clippy.
Some people absolutely loved Clippy. But there was a reason he was mocked and derided.

And not just because we all know that paperclips don't have eyes.

Are you saying the paperclip maximizer is actually the utilitarian ethical ideal?

I downloaded it because of that. I'm just tired of it being shoved down my throat every time, all the time, everywhere.
I just want to be left alone more.

Some might argue that for long term viability, donating is more effective than downloading, but it's a first step...
