The federal government just posted the largest deficit since COVID

>  Still, the single biggest factor in rising spending and growing deficits is actually the size of the national debt itself. Interest payments on the debt rose 11 percent in fiscal year 2026 and totaled more than $1.1 trillion.

Well it’s a good thing our bond yields aren’t spiking  or we’d be in serious trouble.

I'd be surprised if US can maintain the current situation for more then 2-3 years.

Just in time for the next administration to shoulder the blame and try to fix it!

I think 2-3 months is optimistic, but I give it 2-3 quarters. We are just now feeling the effects of the Strait of Hormuz closing, and we're inching closer to a closing of the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.

The American economy is going to come to a screeching halt because the top of the K-shaped economy can't keep everything afloat when the bottom of the K sinks further. Americans who can't afford to drive to work will stay home, and employers will face a new crisis over work from home. Add on the notion that AI can replace workers who can't afford to drive, and we'll see the less coordinated version of the COVID shutdown. No "heroes", not "necessary workers", no paycheck protection program or stimulus; and if they do, currency devalues faster.

And right now, there is a existence-threatening financial crisis unfolding in America, and not the Republicans nor the Democrats have a plan for how to move forward.

Just a promise of "trust me, bro" from anyone running for office right now.

Buy gold, you're going to be living in a foreign country by 2028.

Unique-Egg-461 | an hour ago

shhhhh....its def fixed. stop looking at the details, your talking like the ENEMY! /s

The big question is, when (not if) they cannot maintain it, what happens? I know, bad things, but please ELI5.

Defiant_Wolf5934 | 15 minutes ago

Hint hint: we can't. The country will default on its debt. The military will crumble. Social security and medicare will stop making payments. But hey, all those billionaires and wealthy corporations got their tax cuts. So when our own currency is fucking worthless and no country will lend us money anymore, at least those fortune 500 execs got theirs.

duckduck-a-go-go | 2 hours ago

$11.5 trillion (so far) of that debt was added during Trump's first and second terms as president.

BuT thE TArriFFFFFsss....

Gamer_Grease | 11 minutes ago

IIRC most of the outstanding debt is just Bush Jr. and Trump tax cuts.

0202_tihssitidder | 23 minutes ago

Zero reason for a deficit. None.

The CBO reports that the federal government collected $182 billion in customs duties during the fiscal year. That's actually an 11 percent decline relative to 2025, because the federal government was required to issue refunds for tariffs that were ruled unlawful by the U.S. Supreme Court earlier this year.

Yep it would have been not nearly as bad without the idiotic legal and PR campaign against the tariffs.

elon_musks_cat | 2 hours ago

How? After DOGE found hundreds of billions of dollars to cut from waste fraud and abuse? After cutting taxes in 1981, ‘82, ‘86, 2003, 2017, and 2026 which grew our economy and ended up increasing our revenues thanks to all that cash trickling down? After deporting millions of illegals sucking up all the welfare? After cutting ACA subsidies? After kicking off all the lazy stoners on Medicaid? After winning the war in Iran? After hitting all time highs in the stock market? After becoming the hottest country on earth with the highest IQ president?

This is obviously fake news.

For what? What has Trump delivered us for all this spending? Healthcare cuts, shuttering of rural hospitals, constant food recalls, gas and diesel price skyrocketing, a collapsing housing market, another worthless war, idiotic tariffs making everything more expensive. That's just a short list. Literally nothing is better, not a single fucking thing.

23rdCenturySouth | 2 hours ago

So that billionaires could have more power over workers.

Who do you think we owe all that money to?

Efficient_Smilodon | an hour ago

teshh | an hour ago

All that extra spending went to corporations. Tariffs refunds, covid relief, low interest loans, overpriced projects, fraud, etc. Corpos have been absolutely feasting on government money for the past decade.

And all of that money comes at the expense of the American taxpayer.

This is absurd.

Recall that a Democrat, Clinton, was the last person to balance a budget, while bush got us into an illegal 20-year war and tanked the economy after that.

Then remember how the next Democrat in the oval cleaned up bush’s economic mess and handed the felon krasnov a thriving economy, with a better healthcare system.

The felon krasnov soon trashed that thriving economy while helping generate hundreds of thousands of avoidable severe covid persistent suffering and deaths by encouraging people not to vaccinate like he, his family, and all Fox news members were first in line to get the jab.

Don’t forget that krasnov also denied the advice of all Nobel economists about the obvious disaster of his ridiculous tariff scam, when brazen lies earned him a second shot at ruining the country.

Yet his cult and loyalist maga lemmings still mindlessly support krasnov “because he does do much better with the economy.”

I still don’t get it - this obscene level of prideful ignorance.

Bush’s tax cuts did way more damage to our fiscal position than the wars.

Remember years ago when conservatives were all up in arms about the national debt so they started a whole Tea Party movement to fight it?

Color me shocked that it was just a bunch of fucking hillbilly racists all along.

Gamer_Grease | 10 minutes ago

The Taxed Enough Already Party was in fact a pro-debt party. They wanted to spend money. They just didn’t want to pay taxes to fund it.

0bfuscatory | an hour ago

Let’s not forget the IRS programs and staffing that Trump cancelled, that would have caught hundreds of billions in tax fraud (and probably his own) and paid for itself many times over.
Along with free Direct filing that was already mostly implemented:

AmericanScream | an hour ago

Don't worry, by the time people get fed up with the republicans and the economy really begins to crash, there will be a mini "blue wave" that will happen and everybody will blame this mess on democrats.

It's the standard cycle: republicans screw everything up. democrats get a little bit of power, but not enough to really change anything; democrats often have to raise taxes to keep the economy from completely collapsing; republicans go, "see the democrats screwed things up worse" and get back in power.

Wash. Rinse. Repeat.

Meanwhile the only time the debt was ever paid down was during a democratic executive administration (Clinton) and the democrats have never had a super majority in our lifetimes, so nobody really knows what they could do if they actually didn't have to bow to republicans. But hey, let's blame the democrats anyway.

DTCCCanSuckMyLeft | an hour ago

Democrat politicians don't really raise taxes much anymore, they just ride temporary tax cut expirations because I guess they like being abused rather than taking a hard stance on actual increases....that would be too hard.

Today's Democrats are not the same as they were 30 years ago.

bigbugzman | 47 minutes ago

Obama had a super majority.

Tastie_Duck_Anus | 9 minutes ago

Who told you that nonsense?

AmericanScream | 33 minutes ago

>Obama had a super majority.

That's totally false. He never had a super majority.

You apparently don't even know what a "super majority" is. A super majority means you have the votes to bypass a filibuster by the opposing party.

The democrats had a very small majority for just a tiny period of time, but it was not able to get past a republican filibuster, which is why they couldn't get "The Public Option" part of the Affordable Care Act - which was the Democrats major contribution to healthcare reform (Medicare for all / single payer opt-in to medicare - would have been awesome). And you had independents like Liberman who flip flopped all over the place sabotaging the democrats.

Learn the truth and stop spreading lies:

https://www.commonwealthfund.org/publications/newsletter-article/senate-democrats-drop-public-option-woo-lieberman-and-liberals-howl

If the democrats had a super majority they wouldn't have had to compromise to win the support of Lieberman to even get the neutered ACA passed. Lieberman wasn't a democrat but an independent whose vote was up for sale to the highest bidder.

bigbugzman | 11 minutes ago

60-40 is a supermajority. Obama had 60 democrats.
