Is there a highly efficient implementation available?

Define "highly efficient." It's not a very complex VM. Perhaps the original implementation would count, since the CDP1802 has many positive attributes, but performance wasn't one of them.

Never realized CHIP-8 was that simple.

It is a lot of people's first emulator project due to how simple it is to implement.

A CHIP-8 emulator written in CoffeeScript got me my first programming job in 2011 when a high-school competition judge saw it. (The job was Linux kernel network card optimization, something I was very unprepared for :D I ended up making little Python/C syslog-adjacent utilities that the CEO dreamed up, something Claude would whip out in 5 minutes nowadays. RIP junior jobs)

Writing a CHIP-8 emulator was one of my first Zig projects. I adore the simplicity.

That’s an awesome coincidence. I also chose a CHIP-8 emulator to be my first zig project when I was first learning the language.
