Not the first time FB has interefered in elections. Cambridge Analytica and Steve Bannon were up to their necks in funding Farage with dirty money to influence Brexit voters and post anti-Remain content all over Facebook. It cost the UK dearly over the last 10 years.

The us historically has not held back when trying to open up foreign markets to American industry and goods.

Big Tech now occupies an absolutely essential part of the US economy (which hasn’t grown outside of the tech sector) so just as the us would have pressured a country to open up to American guns, cars, tobacco, sweet drinks in the past, it now puts pressure on countries to open up their tech markets to unfettered American companies, in disregard of national laws and sovereignty.

But Brazil knows that allowing these tech companies to operate freely in Brazil will undermine the public space by flooding it with disinformation.

The us cares about the political sphere of other countries as much as it cares about their health when it pushed countries to serve kids Coca Cola in school.
