Gleam doesn't compile to Erlang source anymore

Am I reading it correctly that Gleam to erlang abstract form is quicker than erlang to erlang abstract form?

With that particular benchmark project compiled with rebar3, yes.

Gleam is a cute and well-designed language, which I'd like to use if I had more time and a good use case.

Unrelated question: How do gleam users feel about use expressions? https://tour.gleam.run/advanced-features/use/

They're popular, but they the most common point for folks to get confused when learning Gleam, if they have any trouble.

Echoing lpil, it takes a while for use to click, but when it does, it really helps make code more readable. I would go so far as to call it one of the most useful parts of the language.

Do you feel it encourages continuation-style APIs, even for things that could be expressed without them? (Kinda like Haskell's do notation encourages monadic APIs)

i've been compiling for i guess 38 years and i never heard transpiler used to imply inferiority, but rather just leverage.
