Tbh I’m not sure why people keep saying this. All their power comes from other people. All you have to do is stop using their products, engaging with their stories, investing in their companies, and for those that do, stop working for them. And it all goes away.
Except for the fact that FB is tied into many products now and hundreds of thousands of apps and websites support “Log in with Facebook,” and a smaller subset actually require a Facebook account to use at all. So, easier said than done.
I haven't had a Facebook account for over ten years. I can go where I want to online and/or by cellphone, and access sites I want to access because I've never run across this. As u/thisnameisnowmine says, it's really quite easy to live without.
You did all that and yet it persists. So clearly "just stop using it" does not work as individual advice when the other corporations are more than capable of perpetuating it without you.
You know, that's exactly the argument I hear, particularly from younger Americans (I am not an American), for not cutting down their consumption of fast food and fast fashion, plastics, for demanding the high consumption life their parents and grandparents had. "What difference will it make if I sacrifice, since no one else will?"
Of course, since each one makes that argument, none make the first move, and so nothing changes. But if everyone cut back on, say, cheap clothes made overseas and shipped/trucked to their town, and only bought what they needed, when they needed it, the profits of the labels (which are not usually overseas, but in North America) would plummet, the shippers would lose a noticeable chunk of business, and thus need less fossil fuel, as would the trucking companies.
Corporations, be they Meta or Chevron or Saudi Aramco, do not simply live in a closed and circular economy: they need us to pay for goods and services that require, in their turn, goods and services to be created and shipped. If we did not willingly consume at the bottom, those corporations would very soon wither and fall from the top.
Is it any wonder that Meta promotes conspicuous consumption through data sales to other corporations, advertising algorithms, and all its platforms? It is your responsibility, and mine, and every ones, to turn our backs, not just on Facebook, but on the whole consumer thing.
It's morphed into something it wasn't in the old days. I started on facebook in 2007 and almost 20 years later it's morphed into an ad heavy platform that acts as a surveillance tool. You never see your friend's posts on the main feed anymore. It's just endless ads and content the algorithm 'thinks you'd like' but without giving the end user any control over how much of the bullshit is on the app.
How about just breaking up all these giant corporations? No company on earth should have the kind of power or financial resources to control any government. Even the tiny ones.
He is a billionaire. He needs his assets to leverage against so he can borrow money to fuck us all over. He'll always want to have as much control over the enterprise as possible. Same thing Elon does. Same thing they all do.
