Four Kids in One Faith-Healing Family Died. Authorities Could Do Nothing.

I'm going to get really bleak here but follow my logic:

If I caused my daughter's death then I would never be able to confront it.

If I was in the cult that had demanded it, I would probably rather live in delusion than confront what I'd done.

So, counter intuitively, this may harden their resolve and fervour.

America's legal system needs to start recognising children as people rather than the parents property.

bushwhack227 | 17 hours ago

You're right, which is why in much of the country the state would step in to protect the other children

kazuwacky | 11 hours ago

No offense intended but that's no consolation to these children. This is why America has a rep for not caring about child death.

Absolutely, an any perceived hostility from the ‘outside’ would draw people further into their circle. It’s horrendous, surely these parents losing multiple children are just broken on the inside (not that that explains or excuses it continuing to happen)

This is also strong evidence of Christonationalism, which America has had a terrible time containing.

Since religious leaders got involved in politics, it seems like your on the path to Gilead.

The only answer is for people to unite and pressure their leaders. Also to get basic information out to people to combat your cultural issues.

Take trans rights, in the UK the medical age of consent is 12. That's the age where a child can understand and advocate for their health. In America (like always) you have a patchwork and that makes public awareness low.

Plus the culture that a parents home is their castle, not to be infringed upon. This is fertile ground for cults such as the horrific case of Ruby Franke.

These children need rescuing, you can't neglect your children to death and get away with it. It's foul.

I agree with you but I’m actually from Australia hah

Which, as a country, undoubtedly has its problems but when you read stories like this it does make me very grateful that we don’t allow religious exemptions for medical procedures or vaccines. I think we’ve managed the state/federal divide a bit better down here (which has a very interesting legal/political history but not relevant here!)

(Access to and education about good medical care is also a seperate issue)

I think the USA, UK and Australia sharing a language means that we have an easier time seeing what's wrong with each others cultures. We just need to confidence to speak.

I'm on no high horse, I'm a British grooming victim and know first hand how "Keep Calm and Carry On" has protected monsters like Saville. The culture of silence is thick and rancid

Ive noticed Americans reaching for British and Australian culture more and more. Steve Irwin is turning up in my feeds regularly again. Blueys insane popularity shows how children's media can be thoughtful.

As someone who was alive during peak American monoculture of the 90s, I'm so happy to see it fracture. Americans will be better off for it.

Absolutely! Australia has a torrid history of abuse and segregation under the guise of child protection in the Stolen Generation. The British do the ‘keep calm and carry on’ and the Australians have a ‘she’ll be right’ ostensibly laid back attitude.

One of the benefits of the interest (despite all the bad) is how much easier it is to connect and gain really interesting knowledge you just would never have had access to.

And I’m a big fan of Bluey’s success! Australia seems to do excellent children’s media, a benefit of a national broadcaster - you guys export all of your wonderful dramas and cozy mysteries :)

I've read that this is the same "logic" used by Mormons, Jehovah's Witnesses, and the other religions that have their members do missionary duties.

The shunning, mockery, and general hostility from the outside world doesn't "wake them up" to the craziness of their religion, but instead strengthens their faith that they are living on the one true path to salvation and everyone else is a heathen doomed to Hell.

Far out I thought this was a reshare of the Atavist's article about the Piland family's children's deaths but it's a completely different state and family with multiple deaths. This is horrific.

Zxvasdfthrowaway | 15 hours ago

I thought the same.

I am sure they wouldn’t treat an ectopic pregnancy either.

Fluffy_Yesterday_468 | 10 hours ago

I though the same too :(

Apparently their church is okay with modern social media?

ladychelbellington | 16 hours ago

My first thought after reading this article. Modern medicine is evil but hey, let’s post memes on social media!

I will never understand the blatant disregard for a child's life like this. I almost died from type 1 diabetes and it is one of the most horribly painful and awful things I've ever experienced. But I was in my twenties when it happened and not under the care of my parents. It's just so difficult to imagine seeing a child suffer like that.

Fucking Idaho. Beautiful state full of people who should be institutionalized.

DuctTape_OnFleek | 17 hours ago

I don't think I've been haunted in a while after reading something, but I don't even know what to say.

This wasn't too graphic, just heartbreaking and infuriating.

SquidTheRidiculous | 11 hours ago

Children's rights are a joke. We know most abuse happens at home and yet we only ever use that to restrict children's autonomy. So that if and when their parents are abusive neglectful or delusional monsters nothing can legally be done to save them. The parents right to abuse supercedes the child's right to live.

enceinte-uno | 13 hours ago

> to avoid the curse of turning to medicine as adults.

Bit ironic to say that given that several children in the congregation probably won’t live to adulthood

yo-ovaries | an hour ago

If they keep popping them out at 10 or 15 per female some of them will survive. Maybe some of the females will survive too.

miridot | 17 hours ago

This isn’t a long read (unless my browser is cutting the story off and I’m missing something).

Regardless I detest these people and their horrid religion

[OP] hereforfakestories | 16 hours ago

It’s definitely on the shorter side of a long read, fair enough! I thought it fitted the spirit of the sub though, and I had seen an article within this investigation a few weeks back, so I wanted to post the follow up.

These cults fetishize child mortality.

yo-ovaries | 58 minutes ago

Yes and it’s such a strong reinforcement for the parents to stay.

If you accepted you killed your child for your cult that would be devastating.

Instead you’ll forever convince yourself that you made a sacrifice and passed a test.

Idaho is such a stupid state. I would say Utah is my worst neighbor state but Idaho sits there on top of my state and gives Utah a run for its money. Any state that allows religion to abuse children is a shit hole. Religious and racist. Truthfully a Hallmark of a great place /s. If all they were doing is harming adults I'd say let the racist white people be. But the fact they are harming and killing their kids and no does anything, white privilege is wild especially where it intersects with religion. Imagine another religious group doing this but being brown, we'd find a way to stop it lol and the parents would be in prison, as they should be.
