What are you doing this weekend?

I'll be overthrowing my corrupt government. Elections are on Sunday and the atmosphere in the country is absolutely insane. Hopefully, we won't have to clash with the police that much, otherwise there's a good chance we'll become another Belarus.

Would be a real bummer for that to happen to a country that's in charge of this site's TLD.

I'm going to be offline. Christ, this week.

I've been frustrated and panicking a bit about many things, and so after family time I'm planning to spend a couple of hours just engaged in single-player (puzzle/platform-like) games. I looked into what's available yesterday and I've installed Untitled Goose Game which I remember finding funny. I really don't like "interactive movies" which seem to be all that's released. Suggestions are appreciated (PS5)!

Not sure if PS5 or not but I recently discovered Contraption Machine which is a modern remake of The Incredible Machine by the same dev. World of Goo I also enjoyed and has recently been re-released by Netflix.

Contraption Machine

You probably mean contraption maker.

Yes, that's the one!

puzzle game: order of the sinking star just came out!

platform: I just replayed Cave Story+, but it's not on ps5... Kero Blaster is, it looks like? That one is fun. Or La-Mulana

kneeawn | 10 hours ago

As another comment said, Order of the Sinking Star has been fun. I’ve also been working through Dimhaven with a different group and that’s been a good time :)

Fez!

I want to take meditation practice again. The world currently feels like shifting sands. Started yoga practice this week as well. We are also having a small 1-night vacation in the pyrenees.

Working hard to launch Tangled 1.0.

kind of funny to see you link atproto project announcement on twitter

Trying to move the Mastodon server that I host to NetBSD. I didn’t find a suitable guide so hopefully my own notes can turn into that.

Funnily, when Googling for someone else doing this, Gemini’s summary told me it can’t be done and I should use GoToSocial. Sure, 9 years and hundreds of users later let me just pivot to another server…

The weather is getting colder and autumn leaves are in their peak. I want to get in one last good hike before the trails are slippery from fallen leaves and ice, and before the wind is too bitter to enjoy it.

I’m working on Duel Chronicle, a single-player Yu-Gi-Oh! browser game.

It's my birthday on saturday, so my partner and I are visiting an art gallery, swinging by a few pubs on the way home, and then cooking a lamb biryani.

Early happy birthday!

Tomorrow I'm going to the local Linux Day! On Sunday either repairing my bike and going for a ride and doing some shopping or play some videogames with my partner, depending on the weather. Maybe we'll go to the cinema and eat at my favorite chinese diner in town.

I don't think I'll get time for this, but I might work on a small GTK/Adwaita application/command launcher using relm4 and gtk4-layer-shell. I want a launcher that uses libadwaita's widgets and styling and I think the options that are out there a bit too customizable. I don't really want to spend time ricing these days! Also, they all reinvent their own way to handle customizable search providers; I'll just be using org.gnome.Shell.SearchProvider2.

Handmade Cities is hosting a Seattle co-working session today. Furthermore we found a meetup host for Philadelphia: if you know someone who lives there, ask them to wishlist that city at the bottom!

Finishing "Against The Machine" by Paul Kingsnorth, off a recommendation that it's similar to Wendell Berry. It's alright. More approachable than Ellul, at least... I was expecting more environmentalism and what I got was a lot of whining about culture.

Since it's almost Halloween, reading "American Fantastic Tales", a collection by Library of America. I read a bunch of the 1940s-Modern day ones earlier this month (great stuff in in there, "I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream" by Ellison, "Last Feast of Harlequin" by Ligotti, "The Little Stranger" by Wolfe-- "The Little Stranger" is incredible, a real standout.). Now getting into the first volume, "Poe to the Pulps". Excited to read the James short story, and of course the Lovecraft.

  • Hopefully some writing.
  • Hopefully some table tennis.

Don't care much about all the remaining errands and unavoidable social engagements I have to do over the weekend.

I'm trying to extend Hindley-Milner type inference to infer integers bitwidths. The language I'm implementing has comptime integers of arbitrary size for the integer literals, but they need to be cast into integers of fixed-size before compilation.

// "1" is gonna have its bitwidth inferred through the expressions where it's used
// in Rust, you'd type 1u32 or something to state the type explicitly
return 1 + some_int_returning_function();

I'm still not sure how to do this. I don't have a lot of experience with Hindley-Milner. So far I've only implemented toys in Hindley-Milner, but I don't think it's gonna be too hard.

3lambda | 19 hours ago

Isn't this what Rust already does? I.e. the type of an integer literal without a type suffix is inferred by how it is used later. I am going to try an alternate design:

  1. Run a typing pass that types all integer expressions as Integer (an arbitrary precision integer).

  2. Compute constant values of expressions, using arbitrary precision arithmetic.

  3. Run a pass to refine the integer expression types from step 1 as follows:

a. If an expression e was given a value v in step 2, then give e the type { v }. { v } is a subtype of every type that contains v as a value. For example, if v = 5, then { 5 } is a subtype of i8, u8, i32, u32, etc.

b. Otherwise if e is an explicit conversion to type T, then e has type T

c. Otherwise e has a type computed from its structure and a set of combination rules, e.g., U32 * U32 = U32

vinipsmaker | 16 hours ago

3.c is the part that I'll be working on. I'm gonna generate constraints from expressions/uses, and then do something with these constraints.

I was thinking of giving minimum/maximum bitwidths to do refinements, but soon I'll find out how it goes.

Isn't this what Rust already does?

Oops, my bad then

Watching a documentary about how the earth could be if we were solarpunky; going to a birthday; going batchata dancing and sleeping in. On top of that, just enjoying the weather at the beach and reading as much offline as possible and programming without clankers to unslop my life (at least on the weekends and privately)

kitkat | 13 hours ago

What's this documentary? It sounds interesting.

xnacly | 9 hours ago

It was a fridays for future event showing the first two episodes of a show on solar punk made by a group of latin american animators

Trying to continue setting up my NixOS server for self-hosting! Got a VPS for backups, and am working through Forgejo setup now.

I’m just going to try to write. Trying my hand at a bit of fiction lately, but I am awful at plots. I think I just love world building, to be honest, but eventually I’d like to own some stories in these places I create.

Open to suggestions about resources to get better at drafting a workable plot for fiction.

k749gtnc9l3w | 18 minutes ago

I can only say that one of my favourite pieces of fiction is explicitly around a few pieces of worldbuilding, with the plot pretty clearly just added around the key points of worldbuilding to show them in motion.

Playing a gig with my band at a local restaurant / bar on Saturday.

Otherwise will try to relax and mentally prepare myself for starting a new role at work next week.

I'm going to be hand-writing an agent harness in C (repo is here: https://tangled.org/xenia.sh/golf)

Why hand write it? Why in C?

Well, originally I started because I was fed up with my current job and "I needed to feel something again." And then I found that I was having fun with it.

Two weeks left in my partner’s school board election, so I’ll be supporting them while hopefully getting started on woodworking what-nots for upcoming winter markets.

colindean | 15 hours ago

Gonna go see some leaves. Might go for a long drive, or maybe a day trip into central Pennsylvania, if the weather is looking nice.

Elsewise, reading some book on my XTEINK X3 (the back glass of which I accidentally broke this week, so I need to look into securing that), probably finishing "Understanding the 4 Rules of Simple Design" by Corey Haines. I'm re-reading it for the first time in years amid running a Coderetreat internally for my team this past week (first internal CR in probably a decade!) and hosting Global Day of Coderetreat in Pittsburgh on Sat. Nov 14.

So I didn't get around to trying NetBSD on the NAS/Immich machine last weekend, mainly because I was worried about backing up the Immich database. Turns out that's an automatic nightly job that's already running, and it saves to the zfs.

Maybe this is the weekend I dig out a USB stick and a VGA monitor, and see what happens.

My laptop's been wobbly, and I'm investigating that. It's been stalling on incremental backups with Time Machine, so I'm working on a fresh backup to another destination now.

kneeawn | 10 hours ago

I’m pretending I’m going to migrate my homelab to NixOS, but in actuality it will be cleaning + hosting a party + cleaning afterwards and then back to the week. It’s good to be social, but man hosting takes it out of me.

Tux willing this is finally the time I unfuck my graphics driver situation and can resume playing computer games. I've tried manually installing the proprietary nvidia drivers and that didn't bloody work, so I'll just wipe the drive and do a clean install. I think I'll go for Bazzite instead of Debian this time.

Trying to get a website indexed by Bing. I’m pretty happy of how it is indexed and ranked on Google, but unfortunately it is virtually nonexistent on Bing, and I think it’s because the language variant of each page is selected with a query parameter instead of a path parameter. Google is fine with that but I suspect this does not really work with Bing. Unfortunately Bing’s Webmaster Tools don’t really help, and all of that is not really documented… SEO is still a thing!

I did a small, local site recently and it was a trip down memory lane dealing with web master tools, sitemaps, and meta tags. The new seo snake oil is needing a bunch of ai seo stuff like markdown formats and agents.txt but I’m afaict those aren’t used.

motet-a | 13 hours ago

These are definitely not useful. At the moment, I don’t have any clanker-friendly markdown, but all the important content can be easily parsed from the HTML without JavaScript. And it actually works, when I ask {Claude,ChatGPT,Gemini} about my website, if the clanker is able to use Google it finds my website and reads all the relevant information. But if it tries to use Bing… nope. It doesn’t even find my website. That’s it.

One could think that classic search engines become irrelevant with AI because all the knowledge of the web would be embedded inside the LLM itself. But that’s not how it works, at least for now. Clankers only know basic information about the most popular websites, so they use Google and Bing all the time. Some of them are really fond of Bing, actually…

Continuing my photo gallery project (https://git.ahlcode.fi/nicd/kuvatus). Currently implementing the single photo view and navigation between views without page loads.

I started with Tailwind, but got annoyed of the workflow of having to find out what the Tailwind equivalent of a given CSS rule is and what the allowed values are. I realised that what I most benefited from Tailwind were the premade colours, typographical settings, spacings, animations etc. But the class usage was not really helping me.

So looking for a replacement, I stumbled upon Open Props, which has opt-in styles for some input elements and otherwise is just a big collection of --variables. Combining this with the usage of web components allows me to have a setup with a Lustre component and a CSS file next to it, e.g. top_header.gleam and top_header.css. The props are visible in the component by default and having the CSS scoped to the component helps me avoid the kind of "ball of mud" CSS files I've created in earlier projects. There's a bit of extra ceremony with the web components, but it hasn't been too much thus far.

Converting the build pipeline of my static site generator to be asynchronous, after I've recently added an in-process, bare bones NPM downloader and JavaScript bundler to minimize dependencies for using it.

Travelling back from NL today. Have a vague idea of working on some local government transparency stuff, but that's unlikely to be train work.
