France is the dearest per kilometre (≈ €11 per 100 km for a car). 11 countries' motorways are free for a car — 5 of them with tolled bridges, tunnels or city charges (*) — and 8 sell a sticker for a period instead.[1]
* Free motorways, with these tolls: Belgium — Liefkenshoek tunnel; Denmark — Great Belt bridge, Øresund bridge; Netherlands — Westerschelde tunnel; Sweden — Øresund bridge, Stockholm congestion tax, Gothenburg congestion tax, Sundsvall bridge, Motala bridge; United Kingdom — Dartford Crossing, M6 Toll, London Congestion Charge. Norway charges at automatic toll stations across the country.[2]
Per-km countries show the typical rate we hold per country; exact rates differ by road (see the full data). Vignette countries show the shortest pass on sale.

Two bridges cost more than all of France
Øresund €139
Great Belt €86
France €121
Spain €0 · Stockholm congestion tax €2.68
Driving Helsinki to Costa del Sol by motorhome (4,555 km, planned 11 Oct 2026), the Øresund and Great Belt bridges cost €225 together. Every French motorway toll on the same route came to €121, and Spain's toll-free autovías added nothing.[3,4,5]
The Alps are priced by the hole you choose
carmotorhome ≤ 3.5 t
Gotthardno toll beyond the Swiss vignette
* secondary sources only; the operator publishes no figure we could read.
Mont Blanc costs a car €56.40 one way; the Gotthard costs nothing beyond the Swiss vignette. The Brenner is €12.50 on top of Austria's vignette.[6,7,8,9]
Where you fill the tank matters more than most tolls
petroldiesel60 litres, cheapest petrol first
A 60-litre fill of petrol costs €65 more in Denmark than in Poland — more than the Brenner, Austria's 10-day vignette and the Great Belt bridge together (€57).[10]
† Sweden: diesel currently costs well over petrol at the pump; national averages on 11 Oct 2026 were 18.83 kr (95) and 22.88 kr (diesel) per litre (bensinpriser.nu).

Three more things
- The Westerschelde tunnel is free for cars but €18.20 for anything over 3 m high, roof boxes included — so most campers still pay.[11]
- Austria's 10-day vignette costs €3.20 more than its 1-day pass (€9.60 vs €12.80); Switzerland sells only a 14-month one (CHF 40, ≈ €43), even for a two-hour transit.[12,13]
- Spain freed the AP-4 and AP-2 in 2020–21 and Portugal its former shadow-toll motorways (A22, A23, A24, A25 and A28) on 1 January 2025, so older cost guides overcharge these routes.[14]

Notes, caveats and sources (21)
- Prices are for a single trip in the cheapest public class for a car or a motorhome up to 3.5 t (6–10 m where the class goes by length). Tags and subscriptions are cheaper.
- Prices in DKK and CHF are converted at the European Central Bank rate in the sources; the booth charges the local currency.
- Route figures are what one planned route passed on the date shown; another day or route differs.
- Where we don't hold a tariff we say so: North Macedonia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro and Albania are not priced, and Serbia's figure is a typical rate, not its published tariff. Poland charges cars only on three concession motorways.
- The Great Belt motorhome bands come from one secondary source; the operator's own page renders its table in a way we couldn't read.
- Sweden: diesel currently costs well over petrol at the pump; national averages on 11 Oct 2026 were 18.83 kr (95) and 22.88 kr (diesel) per litre (bensinpriser.nu).
