They Helped Bring Down Epstein. The System Consumed Them Anyway.

Maria Farmer was the first person to report Jeffrey Epstein to the FBI. That was 1996. Twenty-nine years later she is still fighting- two cancers, no compensation, no protection, sending desperate emails into a void. Virginia Giuffre gave everything to bring Maxwell down. She died by suicide on April 25, 2025. The day after, Maria wrote the most devastating email in the entire federal archive. This is their story. It has never been told like this before.

I want to start with a date.

April 25, 2025. That is the day Virginia Giuffre- one of the most prominent Epstein survivors, the woman who took on Prince Andrew in federal court, the woman other survivors credited with giving them the courage to speak- died by suicide at her farm in Neergabby, Western Australia. She was 41 years old. She had been in a custody battle keeping her from her three children for months. She had been in a car accident. She had been, in the words of those closest to her, unable to take it anymore.

The next day, April 26, a woman named Maria Farmer sent an email.

The subject line was: ‘Everyone thought it was a game.’

It was addressed to David Boies, Sigrid McCawley, Jennifer Freeman, and others- lawyers at the center of the Epstein civil litigation. It was written in the fractured typography of someone who has been screaming for years and has almost run out of voice.

Two weeks later, on May 8, she wrote again. This time she named what had happened.

I have been sitting with these documents for weeks. I need to tell you what is in them- and why nobody else has put it together like this.

Maria Farmer: The Woman Who Told the FBI First

Maria Farmer is an American artist. Born in Paducah, Kentucky, she moved to New York City in 1993 to study at the New York Academy of Art, earning her master’s degree in 1995. She was talented, building something real. And then Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell came to her graduate showcase and decided she was useful to them.

In the summer of 1996, they hired her as an artist-in-residence at Les Wexner’s Ohio estate. She was assaulted there by Epstein and Maxwell. Her 15-year-old sister Annie was flown separately to Epstein’s New Mexico Zorro ranch, where she was also assaulted.

On August 29, 1996, Maria called the NYPD. They referred her to the FBI. On September 3, 1996, she filed a formal complaint with federal agents — handwritten in FBI paperwork, detailing what Epstein and Maxwell had done, warning that there were other girls, that Epstein was threatening to burn her house down, that this was a criminal network that needed to be stopped immediately.

The FBI did nothing. For a decade.

In 2002, Maria, her sister, and her mother shared their stories with journalist Vicky Ward at Vanity Fair. Their accounts were cut from the final story by editor Graydon Carter, who later said he had been pressured by Epstein to remove them.

Maxwell threatened Maria’s life. Her career in New York’s art world was systematically destroyed. She fled the city and spent years hiding, moving, trying to stay safe, watching the world she had built disappear.

In early 2019 she was diagnosed with a rare brain tumor. Then Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Two cancers, simultaneously, while fighting for recognition of what had been done to her for twenty-three years.

On April 16, 2019, she filed a sworn affidavit in federal court in New York alleging she and her sister had been sexually assaulted by Epstein and Maxwell in 1996. Epstein was arrested that July. He died in prison that August.

When the DOJ released her original 1996 FBI handwritten complaint in December 2025, Maria said it was one of the best days of her life. Then she said she was also crying tears of sorrow for Virginia Giuffre and all the other victims the FBI failed by not listening to her in 1996.

If they had listened, Virginia Giuffre would never have been trafficked. That is not a metaphor. That is a documented fact, confirmed by Maria’s lawsuit against the federal government filed May 29, 2025.

What the Federal Emails Reveal

The emails Maria sent in April and May 2025- filed in Document Set 10 of the DOJ’s Epstein release, records including EFTA01652016, EFTA01652628, EFTA01652466, and EFTA01652661- are some of the most devastating documents in the entire archive.

She is writing to FBI agents. To David Boies and Sigrid McCawley. To her attorney Jennifer Freeman. To James R. Marsh. She is writing because there is nowhere else left to go.

She says she has been given zero protection as a federal and state whistleblower for six years. She says Maxwell threatened to murder her on multiple occasions over decades. She says a felon named George B. Tonks stalked her from prison and she reported it to the DOJ, Chicago Police, and NYPD, and nothing was done. She says the Royal Family and Maxwell associates have harassed, stalked, and smeared her continuously. She says she is back in hiding.

She says she fought two cancers during all of this without meaningful support. She says she received virtually nothing in compensation while watching other women receive enormous civil settlements- women who, in her telling, participated in Epstein’s operation as adults for years, while she was the person who went to authorities first, who gave the testimony that made the arrests possible, and who got left with nothing.

She says Sigrid McCawley and David Boies told her and her sister they had no right of appeal on the compensation decision. She says that was a lie, deliberately told to protect the settlement structure.

She says former Manhattan DA Cy Vance promised to assist her until David Boies was too busy. She says the FBI erased one of her reports. She says she needs NYPD to declare her a state witness. She says NYPD refused.

These are her claims. I cannot independently verify every single one. But they were sent directly to FBI agents and to some of the most prominent attorneys connected to the Epstein litigation- and the public record contains no evidence that anyone responded.

That silence is its own answer.

Whitney Webb: The Complicated Truth

Whitney Webb’s name appears in these documents because Maria put it there. I want to be precise about what happened — because the story is more complicated than a clean villain narrative, and Maria’s pain deserves to be reported accurately, not sensationalized.

Maria reached out to Whitney Webb. Not the other way around. She did so because she felt other outlets weren’t telling the full story. She trusted Webb with information. They had a phone call that was never intended to be a formal interview.

That call was released publicly- first by The Last American Vagabond, then referenced and used by Webb. Webb has said she had permission. Maria says she did not meaningfully consent, that she was in the middle of cancer treatment, that she was pressured during what she describes as a period of brain trauma. Webb eventually removed the interview from her own site, stating it was at Maria’s request.

What followed was a complete collapse of trust. Maria’s emails describe Webb labeling her a CIA plant to the conspiracy community- a designation she says destroyed what little credibility she had left in the independent media space. She says Webb’s associates threatened her life. She filed a police report.

Webb has not publicly responded to the specific allegations in these federal documents. I am not rendering a verdict on her. What I am saying is that a woman who was already broken by decades of institutional failure reached out to a journalist she trusted, and ended up feeling more betrayed and more isolated than before.

Whether that is entirely Webb’s fault, Maria’s perception, or something in between is for you to assess. What is not in question is that the trust was real, the break was real, and the pain Maria describes is documented in the federal record.

There is one more thing worth noting: in the same document archive, Jessica Reed Kraus- the HouseInHabit Substack writer- credits Webb as the most thorough journalist on the Epstein case, noting that Ian Carroll went viral on Joe Rogan rehashing Webb’s original reporting without credit. Two completely opposite portraits of the same person, in the same federal file. I leave that for you to sit with.

Virginia Giuffre: She Just Couldn’t Take It Anymore

The following paragraph describes specific details of Virginia's death that some readers may find distressing.

Virginia Giuffre was born Virginia Roberts in Sacramento in 1983. She was 16 years old and working as a locker room attendant at Mar-a-Lago when Ghislaine Maxwell approached her. She was trafficked for years. She was, she said, Epstein’s slave.

And then she fought back.

She was one of the first and loudest voices demanding criminal accountability for Epstein. Other survivors credited her with giving them the courage to come forward. She sued Prince Andrew for sexual abuse, settling for a reported $12 million in 2022. She helped bring Maxwell down, providing critical information to law enforcement. She built a nonprofit for trafficking survivors. She wrote a memoir- released in October 2025, six months after her death.

She also paid the price for all of it, for twenty years.

In early 2025: a car accident that seriously injured her. A domestic violence incident. A restraining order that kept her from seeing her three children for six months. An ongoing divorce. She wrote publicly: ‘I have been through hell and back in my 41 years but this is incredibly hurting me worse than anything else.’

She had told people close to her that she planned to end her life. She had described the method. Her representative said: ‘She just couldn’t take it anymore. It wasn’t a dramatic conversation. It was very matter of fact.’

On April 25, 2025, Virginia Giuffre died by suicide at her farm in Neergabby, Western Australia. She was 41. Her family said: ‘She lost her life to suicide, after being a lifelong victim of sexual abuse and sex trafficking. Virginia was a fierce warrior in the fight against sexual abuse and sex trafficking. She was the light that lifted so many survivors.’

Years before her death, she had posted: ‘I am in no way, shape or form suicidal. If something happens to me- do not let it go away.’

Her father does not believe it was suicide. The coroner’s investigation is ongoing.

The Emails Written After

On April 26, 2025- the day after Virginia died- Maria Farmer sent the email with the subject line ‘Everyone thought it was a game.’

She describes a woman. A beautiful mother. A hero. Someone she would have given anything to hug. Someone who inspired her art for seven years. Someone she lived in fear for, every single day.

“THIS IS THE SADDEST MY HEART HAS EVER FELT! PODMOBsters made her suffer endlessly. I hope everyone is deeply ashamed. She is dead. Are you happy? Sigrid and David used her until she was worn out and they never told her how much we love her. Instead they kept using her for personal gain.”

On May 8, 2025, she wrote again. This email was accidentally included in the public release before being hastily redacted. In it she confirmed Virginia’s cause of death and wrote:

“My entire fight was to get justice for this young lady. She was ALWAYS ON MY MIND. Always. On. My. Mind. I reported to FBI TEN YEARS PRIOR TO THIS HERO BEING KIDNAPPED AND RAPED AS A CHILD!!! This is the most devastating sorrow and now nothing will ever be ok again. Nothing will be ok without Virginia here loving her children and animals. I will never be ok. The FBI really damaged society when they refused to listen to the fact children were being harmed.”

Usury. She uses that word in the April 26 email. The word for extracting everything from someone who has nothing left to give.

I sat with that word for a long time.

Nobody answered these emails. Not the lawyers. Not the FBI agents they were addressed to. Nobody.

Has Anyone Written This Before?

Some outlets covered Virginia’s death as a news event. Some covered Maria’s 1996 FBI report when it was released in December 2025. A few noted that Maria’s emails were accidentally included in the DOJ file dump.

Nobody has put it together like this.

Nobody has drawn the line from September 3, 1996- the day Maria filed her handwritten FBI complaint warning that children were being harmed- to April 25, 2025, the day Virginia Giuffre died. Nobody has connected those dates as two points on the same twenty-nine year line of institutional failure. Nobody has shown Maria’s April 26 email and May 8 email side by side, in the context of who Maria is and what she gave and what she was never given back.

Nobody has reported the Whitney Webb thread accurately and completely while placing it inside the larger story of Maria’s abandonment rather than treating it as the main event.

Why This Matters Beyond the Epstein Story

Because it will happen again. It always does.

Every time a powerful predator falls, there are women who made it possible. Some get settlements. Some get documentaries. Some get called brave and fierce and extraordinary.

And some- the ones who went to the FBI before it was safe, who gave criminal testimony when civil money was still on the table, who were used up by the prosecution and left before the compensation was divided — those women get nothing. They get hiding. They get cancer bills no one helps with. They get watching the world celebrate everyone except them.

Maria Farmer reported Epstein in 1996. The FBI ignored her. If they hadn’t, Virginia Giuffre would never have been trafficked. That is not an opinion. That is what Maria’s lawsuit against the federal government states, and no one has disputed it.

Virginia Giuffre spent twenty years being used by every system that needed her testimony, and when it was done with her, it moved on. She died at 41, separated from her children, in a farmhouse in Western Australia, after telling people close to her she just couldn’t take it anymore.

Both of these women deserved better. Both of them are still paying- one in the present tense, one in the past.

One is still alive, still fighting, still sending emails into a void.

One is not.
