In 2019, David Barnes’s ex-wife, a Russian-born accountant named Svetlana Boricovna, had fled the country with their sons, Luke and Daniel, after failing to win sole custody of the children in court. In the United States, there was a warrant out for Boricovna’s arrest. Interpol had issued missing person notices for the two boys. In Russia, though, they seemed to be beyond the reach of the law.
So Barnes decided to take matters into his own hands. With the help of a detective agency, the 64-year-old software programmer had tracked Boricovna to a luxury apartment building in Moscow, where she was living with the children under a different name. Shortly after arriving in Russia, Barnes moved into a two-bedroom unit in the same complex, paying a year’s rent in advance.
Luke and Daniel would never see the apartment. Barnes was in the Russian capital for just over a month before he was arrested by the police and charged with having sexually abused his sons back in Texas. The allegations had been made during a rancorous, yearslong divorce case in Montgomery County. Investigators with the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services and local detectives found insufficient evidence of abuse, and the district attorney had declined to file charges. The Texas father is currently being held in IK-7, a Soviet-era penal colony in the small town of Shilovo, in central Russia.
