New research from the University of Oxford and the University of Reading suggests bipedalism and expanding brain size helped drive the overwhelming dominance of right-handedness in humans.

I'm confused, whats the proposed mechanism for right handedness being a result of bipedalism?

newpua_bie | 16 hours ago

I read the study and there's no such thing, it's just a correlation study about bipedalism and brain size and prevalence of preference for a specific hand (eg majority right handed) instead of the population being 50/50.

I'd love to know more about the mechanism. Likely it would have to be related to the other asymmetrical brain regions (eg language areas) taking space from spatial control of that side

Cats and dogs for example also display 'handedness,' is their's also driven by bipedalism?

Literally all this says is that "humans evolved to be mostly right handed"

Bummer. I just visited r/EverythingScience for the first time and read this garbage

Is this real science? Are we sure this isn't merely some psycho trying to bring back, left handedness is the devil?

Makes no sense.

I got curious if us left handers had lower IQs overall. https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0149763417300210?via%3Dihub

It sounds like our IQs are slightly lower. Also, it's believed that some of us are left handed due to brain damage so it goes to reason we'd have lower IQs overall. I am pretty sure I have brain damage, but my IQ isn't particularly low. It may be the lowest in my family, however. My dad and my mom were both top of their classes. My father, in particular, claimed to have a genius level IQ. He did do very well in school and college, but I still have a little trouble believing it now because he just didn't make very many smart decisions in life.

I was born premature, and I was given oxygen despite not needing it, which is now thought to cause brain damage. I have poor vision in my left eye. An eye doctor thinks I have brain damage, anyway. I would like to have my brain imaged. I always meant to volunteer for research that gets my brain imaged. Maybe I will someday, and I will find out I have half a brain or something. 😛

There's a reason the other one is called the "right" hand /s

Getting your brain imaged would certainly be interesting, but it might be more fruitful to spend your money and effort on seeing a psychotherapist instead.

Head_Midnight666 | 14 hours ago

For what reason do you figure I should see a psychotherapist? I also didn't say I would spend my money on imaging. I said I would volunteer for a research study where they image your brain. It would be free.

If you’re worried or just interested, perhaps your eye doctor can write something to your family doctor, or refer you to an ophthalmologist for further evaluation

Anecdotal evidence but my sister is a certified gifted lzftie. I'm smart but not as mich as her and I'm right-handed

Head_Midnight666 | 11 hours ago

Well, yeah. The difference overall is very small. Of course there are gifted left handed people and retarded right handed people. There might not even actually be a difference, but the best research indicates there is a small difference. So I'll go with that until things change. Sadly, scientific research has a way of changing on you.
